Great post Ernest....In recent years I have been frequenting the Casey games when they are played at some of the traditional inner city venues. Try it if you have time. My favourite is probably the Coburg ground but on a nice day Port and Williamstown ovals are delightful.

Last year I also discovered Frankston oval. A great day out.

I have been to some country games in the last few years, some in SA and some over here.

Going up the highway to Shepp, I was wondering what the hell I was doing but it was really good to go despite the loss. 

You realize what you have gained and lost.

Going to AFL matches particularly the Mecca, we have gained a lot of benefits. The great atmosphere, comfort, amenities, seats, scoreboard replays, indeed, the whole comfort and convenience thing. But for many of us, ""the entertainment factor" is annoying and a distraction.  As  i mentioned in my earlier post, you feel the game is losing its nitty gritty feeling, or, bit by bit, losing its soul. 

Going to the country or local games you have no amenities to speak of but you get heart and soul stuff from the players and spectators. And of course, there are no distractions from the game and the conversational interactions in the crowd. So as a spectator you can suffer from the lack of amenities but enjoy the atmosphere in a different way than at the Mecca.  The only distraction is the hot dog stand and some of the locals who very much reflect the local culture.

Your right, it does lack that Romance,  and perhaps that is the reason clubs like Willy and the Zebs have survived.

 

Ports burgers are good but so are Casey's  Egg'n'Bacon  rolls,  and also the  Roast Beef rolls,  and add the hot drinks as well... I think Casey comes out just in front...  Ports chips are better from memory.

Port has the romance of that Ol red brick Grandstand... and the scorebaord, and the skyline of maturity.

The GF is in reality a LIVE EVENT which is also televised. There is a difference.

There is no doubt the Televisors would prefer a later time but it's not THEIRS. ITS OURS 

As pointed out the game doesn't need all the rubbish you glitz and sham of American rubbish.

The FA cup manages just fine as a day event. So should ours.

strong rumour that a kodi plugin is being worked on. shouldn't be a major problem as kodi is android and they have now recently released other android plugins for some platforms

Is it though with the majority of the tickets sold to corporates and MCC members. The overwhelming bulk of the football following public have no choice but to consume the match through television.

Perhaps it could be described as television in front of a live audience.

This push for change makes me sick. I suspect someone at the AFL is obsessed with the idea of fireworks at the Grand Final. They can't even get the entertainment right. IMO if you can't get Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen or Metallica, don't have anybody. This desire for a night final reminds me of hot cross buns on Boxing Day. "The public demands them!" NO. No they don't. Stop telling us, the football loving public, who buy our memberships and pay for your wages, AFL, want we need, or want. Daytime for me.

The AFLPA has wanted higher wages for years for players, thus the higher price for broadcasting. 

It was still a price way to high that was paid by the Broadcaster and accepted by the AFL, but the deal was done.

And the truth of the matter is that the AFL has lost nearly 20% of it's TV viewers since 2014 ... a peak of 108 million down to 90 million last year .... read more here

It's any wonder they are bringing in new rules to try and get rid of all the ugly congestion.  Facts are facts.  Most people I know just watch their own team predominately. 

The keen ones aren't going anywhere but it could be argued that north of 120 million should be watching the sport now ... and that's not even using incremental growth.

The loss of TV viewers will be a major concern for the AFL. I hope they have conducted a proper review of the reasons why. The quality of the games might be one issue, but I suspect there are others including:

• reduction over time of the number of games on free-to-air TV
• the mish-mash of scheduling days and times (TV viewers are creatures of habit. They like their programs to be consistent. I assume consumers of TV sport are similar)
• as a subset of the above point, is Thursday night football growing or diminishing viewer numbers?
• are TV viewers finding the presentation stale (by that, I mean would viewers like to see changes to the commentators. Not just new ones, but shuffling them around more - such as swapping some of the Friday night and Saturday night callers (like Ten used to do) so there are different dynamics)?

My list above are all TV-related. Consideration also needs to be given to the on-field as well. It seems the AFL has made a serious attempt in this regard with the rule changes for this season.

Most I know hate the congestion ... they have switched off accordingly.  The sport has come down to their team winning and that is it. 

Others here might have an opposite view with their circle

 The keen ones aren't going anywhere ... they don't mind the congestion at all and a large percentage of the keen ones are into fantasy sports where the stats rule supreme.  They love their footy no matter how it is served up.

A good example is the 'Other game' threads on this site ... hardly a word about the actual sport and filled with people complaining about the officiating.

The sport needs to be spectacular and bullet proof.

I also wonder whether the drop-off on TV viewers is about TV generally and not just AFL. It's well known that TV viewership has dropped, particularly amongst the young, due to alternatives such as streaming, online gaming, etc. However, one would have thought that such a drop off would affect AFL and NRL somewhat equally. Unless of course, the NRL-watching audience fits my prejudice of being neanderthals.

Numerous people have been banging on about the commentary (and the umpiting,  perceived drafting errors etc) for decades

You are allowed to criticise yoor own sport ... I have no problem doing it. It is called tough love.

Yet the NRL have maintained their numbers whilst the AFL numbers have dropped off at an alarming rate

I am not barracking for the NRL either ... couldn't give a rats toss bag

I think we know that like all politicians, Gil has selective hearing. 

Like many who hold the reins of power,  acting for or in the public good is not a priority and sometimes not even a consideration.

For people like Gil, acting in the interests of those that support his own position of power is paramount.  

Unfortunately, those that support him are those vested interests who gain financially from the cash cow created by media rights and advertising.    Those vested interests include the clubs and players on which the game is dependant. 

Here's an idea.

If the AFL wanted to show that public opinion matters to their deliberations, why not take a poll of the membership of all AFL clubs, the poll commissioned by the AFL but run by an independent body that could verify the process and the accuracy of the result.
