Firstly thanks to @Demonland for accepting our invitation to be a co-presenting partner of the eighth edition of Demonbracket. Those of you who have played before won't need any further instructions, but for everyone else the Bracket can be summed up as your opportunity to make an arbitrary choice about which Melbourne player you prefer based on whatever criteria you like.

It's a knockout tournament with some byes due to seeding and seniority (more intricate preview post here), where we work down to the one most preferred player on the list. Previous finals:

2012 - James Frawley d. Nathan Jones
2013 - Tom McDonald d. Mitch Clark
2014 - Nathan Jones d. Jack Watts
2015 - Nathan Jones d. Dom Tyson
2016 - Jack Viney d. Nathan Jones
2017 - Max Gawn d. Jack Viney
2018 - Neville Jetta d. Clayton Oliver

The draw will be conducted live on Twitter @demonblog from 19:00 on Friday 25 January, with matches commencing 07:00 Monday 28 January. After that the tournament tree will be updated in this post, and daily matches posted for your voting enjoyment. You can either cast your vote in this thread, via Twitter, Facebook, email ([email protected]) or in the interests of bringing all the people together the BigFooty Demonbracket thread. Only one vote per person per matchup please.

Other important rules for first time players:

  • The voting criteria for each match-up is your personal business. It need not have anything to do with football if you don't want it to, but if does then the best of British luck to you. We won't ask questions, and nor should anyone else. Vote shamers will be denounced.
  • Voting will be conducted between 0700 and 1900 AEDST unless otherwise noted
  • You must cast a valid vote for every match that day or none of your votes on that day's matches will count (I'll try and remind you where possible by there are no guarantees).
  • You must pick a winner in every match up. No half votes, no "I can't split them". Yes you can, and you must.
  • In the event of a tie both players will advance to the next round, except in the case of the Grand Final where a replay will be held the following day.
  • If a match features three or more players and two or more tie for the most votes they will advance with all other players eliminated.
  • We reserve the right to refuse an excessive number of multiple votes from the same person using multiple accounts

This thread will be updated with the list of preliminary and first Round matches on Friday night, and the first match-ups to vote on will be posted Sunday night.

Until then, have at your speculation about potential winners. With five former champions on the list and at least five other realistic championship contenders this promises to be the biggest Bracket yet, and we're thrilled to have the Demonland community join in.

Terrific move to have this included on the Demonland agenda during the pre-season, especially since the club has been unfairly prevented from defending its AFLX crown from 2018 by the Marvel Comix comp which we can all ignore in favour of this initiative (Andy, this deserves a podcast on its own).

Interested to know if Sportsbet is running a market on this and surprised that TMac has been in the wilderness since his shock victory over Mitch Clark in 2013.

Could we see Max Gawn and Braydon Preuss pitted against each other early in the piece?

Amazed at just how much attention and early respect Preuss is gathering from Demon fans ... if someone regularly going to training sessions has the inclination, could we please have a sustained  and very well considered report on his strengths and weaknesses as these are interpreted from observations and other sources, and write a post to these effects on DL across the next few weeks? It would be very interesting for all, taking an individual player in for some scrutiny.

I'm happy to do a podcast about this if @Supermercado has the time.

Let's get past some of the sludgy prelim round games and into the big stuff then go for it.

Friends, a reminder that the draw will be conducted live on Twitter @demonblog from 18:00 tonight. The full schedule will be on demonblog.com at 19:00, and posted on here shortly after. The organising committee will then determine what Monday's opening games will be.

I was thinking of having an election night style full coverage of the entire event.

@Supermercado Would the vote counting be easier for you if I can create a poll? *

* not sure I can do that many separate polls in one. I know you can have multiple polls just but sure if there is a limit.

If possible would that help?

No need, I enjoy manual tabulation. Also like counting votes.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
