Is it time for training already?

Unofficial training day but if anyone is heading down to training today we'd appreciate an update. Thanks in advance.

Nah I was there, except half the squad wasn't, all the newbies including May etc in Alice Springs with Jones and Gawn

Rest did a craft day, apart from rehabbers who were all out at different times, expect Gus to be 'news' item, out jogging laps on his own, had a camera and 'reporter' following him around ???

Craft session was really good, included a game of touch football, gave all the 'steppers' a chance to shine, Garlett had Nibbler on his [censored] without touching him with an inside out step, much to everybody else's amusement, write him off at your peril

Jordan Lewis in magnificent nick for his 15th pre season, said he'd dropped a kilo and did a bit of extra work   'have to keep up'

If we thought the competition for spots was fierce last year, this year will be a whole new level which can only benefit the team

Spoke to the Academy 17 year olds, either I am shrinking, which happens with age, or we will soon be land of the giants, will post a pic later running in the big guys group, and they are both midfielders

Possibly related to 3AWs Rumour File which today had a story about an unnamed AFL player who is developing a new type of players' helmet? The clip didn't confirm the identity of the club or player, though.

You will need their parents consent if you want to take photos of these ones Saty.  An extra bit of advice - don't ask for "guns" pics from these ones.

I'd rather see him do that on game day than at a training session in December.  I'm in the 'want him to return to form' camp but he'll need to do more than a few side steps for people not to write him off in 2019.  He can be an asset to our side moving forward as he's a proven goal kicker who can put plenty of forward pressure on, but the modern game has almost seemed to pass him by in 2018.  I'd love him to prove me wrong, but he's coming from a fair way back.

The modern game has fallen right into his wheelhouse - just look around.  He's just got to adjust to it.

He'll do well to replace Spargo.  It's hard to see them both in the same team but predicting a best 22 at this time of year, whilst fun, is very problematic.

Agree.  Predicting how he fits into our 22 is really only something that can be done based on his recent form, which we all know was pretty poor in the seniors.  We can all see pretty clearly what Goodwin asks of his players, and Garlett just isn't up to it... right now.  As you say, he needs to adjust to it to find a way back into the senior side on a regular basis.  Not only does he have someone like Spargo to contend with, but you get the feeling that the FD rate Bedford highly as well (although you wouldn't expect him to play much senior footy in his first year).

I'd love to see Jeffy back to his best, but I won't be holding my breath, and side stepping a few of his team mates at training won't change my mind either.

I'm a big Garlett fan and was baffled that he wasn't played much in 2018. Admittedly I don't follow Casey at all so I can't attest to his effort or output there and came to my own uniformed conclusion that something must be up for a first yearer to pass him by. I don't think it's a stretch to think that he may have been delisted if his contract was up as a result of not being able to break it into the team. I do wish him the best of luck and hope he can find that spark again and show some of that form he showed when he came to the club. Can play when switched on. Just got to find that switch.

Garlett is finished.  Our club and team has moved past flaky players who pick and choose when it suits them.

Noted ProDee, as I said Goodwin will pick the 22 fit and in form for Rd1, upto Garlett and every other player to be picked, they start monitoring training efforts from Day 1 of the pre season, I asked, so even if you are in rehab, you need to do what is required

Weid, Petty, Garlett,  Nibbler, Joel Smith and Fritsch standouts so far

We were probably saying the same about Spargo last year ...

There is no point playing Garlett in bad weather. He just wont fire and he hasnt been lucky with conditions. And yes it makes him flaky. It is what it is. Dry windy day suits him.

Consistency of effort every week from all senior players will be expected. There is no place for inconsistent effort whoever the player.

My gosh how the standards and expectations have changed.

True Andy.  If Bedford is good enough, and shows enough, then he'll be rewarded with senior footy.  I feel as though he's a different player to Spargo, but time will tell!

Must have had a huge downpour at Etihad during the VFL GF.

Didn't put his body on the line or stand under a high ball.

He's not a "Goody-type"player.

Me too but we both have to wait for more than 11 months to feel that intensity.

Garlett is going to be whipping boy de jour this year

The conditions at North Port Oval for the prelim were atrocious, yet Garlett kicked the sealer, let's not let facts interfere yet again

I am not a Garlett defender, he had a poor year last year, we know, he knows, working his [censored] off so as not to repeat it

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
