In the same way we were left exposed when Lever went down, who comes in as key forward if we trade Hogan and one of Weid or TMac go down?

Trading Hogan still feels ridiculous to me.

Exactly.  My understanding from a club source is that hogan has been groomed as a high half foward utility type and that weideman was seen as the tall forward. Hence hogans up ground time this year and given his aerobic capacity.

Nuts to trade such a quality player. I dont care who would come in. Goody trades out those who dont fit. Watts......

Hogan is a star.

If you do the sums with the points then it was effectively a single pick 7 for Lever.

So pick 5 is already more than we paid for Lever.

If Jesse is traded, we aren't going to get two top 5 picks IMO. We may get a top 5 plus a later first rounder or players to that value.

So we have enough money for one big fish + the 800k or whatever a year Hogan is on available. How do we fit May, Gaff, Preuss and Whitfield into that space? Gaff will want a min of 800k himself and then May would be 600k+. Are we paying Preuss and Whitfield in high fives and IOU notes.

Vince retired, Jones and Lewis in last year of contract, Pedo gone

Honestly we have done everything right by him, including becoming a good team and letting him play his natural game. If he leaves then so be it, it certainly won’t feel like a case of “if only we did better or did more to keep him”.

Agree.  He's gone through heaps.  Been away from home since he was 16.  experienced perspective forming tragedies.  He's homebound is Jesse.

That's not what was proposed. Read it again. If Hogan is worth two first round picks, it goes without saying that a top 2 pick + a player taken at top 2 LAST YEAR is effectively the same.

huh ?  I was replying to deebugs post

He’s contracted and other similar players have been worth 2 picks so that’s what we will get for hogan. Freo are desperate and will cough them up just to get a good player over the line.

I wouldnt be so sure that we will get two first round picks or equivalent. Mahoney and Goodwin have proven themselves to be soft touches when it come to the trade table. They paid overs for Lever and got unders for Watts. Same will most likely happen again

We are in the box seat and Freo are desperate.

No one wants Hogan out, but if the writings on the wall that he will be gone at the end of 2019 we may as well get a better deal now.

AND, With Preuss and Gawn we can play two ruckman if one of TMAC or Weed goes down

Whitfield is still a star. Polled most votes for GWS he'll want decent change. Preuss is either getting good change to play in the VFL or been told he's playing. We don't have the cap space for 4 starters, 3 of which are stars.

I think Watts they knew they’d get the player they wanted and lever they knew they were going to have to give up 2 to get him. I’m willing to bet we get two for Jesse

Via points system we paid pick 7 for Lever. That's not breaking any banks.

Now that is a deal...

The club will not pay what gaff wants. 1.1m

They recognise the need to bring a star studded young group up together a la geelong pay wise. No outliers paywise and the team has bought into this philosophy.

Well if Hogan goes, that's 8 off this years list, which just took a curveball. Frost may be a casualty here as may Hunt. Agree Whitfield is a star, skillful and fast, would kick Lewis out of his spot perfectly.

The salary cap is on the rise though... right? Not sure but I think it's + $1m for next year

Got unders for Watts!??

Kidding yourself mate, this is the same Jack Watts that was told to pull his head in last year only to then get dropped!

We trade him for a 2nd rounder pick which then gets us Fritsch who is a future gun in the making and already showed me this year then Watts ever did.

Oh and did i say that even Port dropped the lazy and pea hearted in Jack Watts this year?

If anything, we got a bargain.

a backline of May, Oscar, Lever, Hibbo, Jetta and Whitfield is insane. Don't forget we need room to keep Gus, Oliver, Trac, Gawn, Viney, Harmes, Weids, Salem all at the club when contracts expire.

Regardless of what we get for him, would prefer he left this year if he wants out, we don't want players who are half in, half out

Yes, it panned out that way, but we could have extracted more at the time if we played hardball

on a reflection, quite the fair point you have there @MurDoc516 ...erm, for the love of the red and the blue, and an electricity bill discount?

Thats OK, Jones, Lewis will be gone by then and maybe Hibberd, Jetta also.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
