The so called 'premiership quarter' has been a strength of ours this year. One of the things I am enjoying about this season, is the 3rd quarters, I slacked off at work and checked and we have won 14 (and lost round 5 Tiges and round 15 Saints by 1 pt each). My memory is fuzzy but even in our salad days between 2000 to 2006 (relatively speaking) we never had such a good run with 3rd quarters. Following conclusions:

1, When Goodwin says the playing group is not caught up/in history(Pre Roos/Goodwin), I believe him. Our percentage this year shows the team took round 23, 2017 to heart.

2, Everyone bar Richmond has been cruelled by injuries (GWS might just get all its players back, which sucks). The dance card for the grand ball is open.

donc

We get to the finals, lack of experience will mean nothing for us. Our 'on' switch is terrifying and I expect cricket scores. If HUNT shows form at Casey swap him for Vince, but might want Vince for hardness if we get there.

My favourite finals team:

B: Michael Hibberd, Sam Frost, Neville Jetta

HB: Christian Salem, Oscar McDonald, Jordan Lewis

C:  Jack Viney, Clayton Oliver, Angus Brayshaw

HF: Jake Melksham, Jesse Hogan, Bayley Fritsch

F: Christian Petracca, Tom McDonald, Charlie Spargo

Foll: Max Gawn, Nathan Jones, Dom Tyson

I/C: Jeff Garlett, James Harmes, Alex Neal-Bullen, Bernie Vince

Emg: Cam Pedersen, Aaron vandenBerg, Jayden Hunt, Sam Weideman, Jay Kennedy Harris,

This is a great point. I think if we do make it we need to back the boys and not worry about defeat. Doggies had no fear because they were happy to be there. Richmond almost played with no expectations because of their past performances in the finals and when they got that win they became a wrecking ball. We can turn it on and nobody bar Richmond will want to face us because as we have shown so far this season we are hard to beat.

Yes we can look at the dissapointments of both Geelong games and the Hawthorn/Saints games. I was so gutted after the Geelong game and i was fuming after the St Kilda game because i didn't think the group was learning the lessons from past experiences. After the natural anger period wore off after those defeats i was able to find positive. Speaking for myself here, when i look at Goody and the players in the team i refuse to believe they ain't trying to improve. I don't believe they drink their own bath water (i think that's just phrase people here use to justify why we lose). I also don't believe the top 8 scalp is playing on the minds of players or coaches.

Looking back on the season i can say we did learn a lot from the Richmond and Hawthorn games. More so from Richmond because i think the Hawthorn game was an aberration of players not playing to the base standard we expect. Since round 5 against the tigers we've gone 9 and 4 with 3 of the 4 defeats being close defeats. We also had to deal with the loss of Lever, Viney and Hibberd in that time while having everyone in the football world hype them up one week and tear them down the next week.

One game at a time, but if we make it i sure as hell hope we get Geelong. They survived us twice, but i don't think they will a 3rd time.

No good winning the premiership quarter  and folding like deck chairs in the last quarter

Must learn to play games right out to the end

Agree - Really want Cats or Essendon 1st up

We're up to our necks in this season, premiership quarter dominance or not. All the current teams are flawed, as they have been for the past few years. Last year, the third quarter was a sticking point for us, this year not - but we can still be pretty sure of building a lead and giving it up or bridging any sort of deficit in most of our matches.

At not one stage vs Adelaide did I think we were out of it or otherwise had it in the bag. It's the new MFC normal. Anything can happen this year if we reach the finals - as most of the less MFCSS-scared on here would be already aware - knowing each week that if we play at our best we're an equal or better chance of taking out any team in the league.

I guess my OP was really about explaining why i was giving up on my own case of MFCSS... I get that there is 4 qtrs to a game.

The 3rd quarters are often where we switch from having played ordinary or even poor football to exciting, winning football. It makes me wonder two things:

  • did the players not listen to the coach before the game but somehow are more receptive at half time?
  • has the coach got the gameplan (using that word broadly to include match-ups, etc) wrong before the game but worked out how to rectify it and explain to the players what they need to do?

Either way, I suspect it's not just coincidence. I expect something happens at half time which suggests Goodwin and his coaching team are earning their money.

I think you would need to look at a break down of all quarters results to see if there's coincidence or not.  If we find we are winning a majority of first quarters, then what does that tell us?

Perhaps if @DaisyDeeciple feels like slacking off again today, they might be able to do a break down of quarter by quarter results.

Quarter won:

1Q: (equal 6th or 4th depending on how you look at it, which is down to 10th)

Rich, WCE 13

Syd 11

Frem, GWS, Melb, Haw, Adel, NM, Coll - 10

2Q: (2nd)

Rich 13

Melb, WCE 12

3Q: (equal 1st)

Melb, NM 14

Coll 13

Port 12

4Q: (equal 3rd)

Rich 14

WCE 13

Melb, Geel 12

Quarters won: (equal 1st)

Melb, WCE 48

Rich 46

Coll 43

So basically we are slower starters.

Half time is an opportunity to adjust. You never really know how the opposition is going to come out. For what it's worth we've generally started okay and then gone up a gear in the third. That's fine so long as you can sustain in for 2 quarters. Last year we were gifting teams 6-7 goal runs early in the game, which makes it a tower to climb. In 2018 we've almost always been in the match before the third quarter. Even on saturday night when we were playing average football, our defense was accountable and we didn't let Adelaide score easily. Watch their goals. They had to work extremely hard for them while we had a bunch of soft ones over the back.

This is it. The 4th doesn't have to be our best quarter but we must get back that ability to close out games. Getting to the point where we can't even feel a tiny bit comfortable until we're up by 6 or 7 goals at 3 qtr time.

I am with you  Lazie

I just cannot relax with this mob no matter what the score

Dont know whether it is age creeping up on me  or the way this team re-invents new ways to lose good leads and games

Not enjoying this year as much as I should

in terms of quarters won we do really well

the issue is that when we lose quarters we REALLY lose quarters

the run-on of goals from the likes of adelaide, geelong (twice), hawthorn, collingwood, north, even footscray, has resulted in heart palpitations

in terms of preferred finals team, with the likes of viney and hibberd likely back for sydney, i'd really like this line-up for that round 21 game:

B: Jetta - O Mac - Frost
B: Vince - Hibberd - Lewis
? Jones - Brayshaw - Salem
HF: Petracca - Hogan - Viney
F: Melksham - T Mac - Garlett
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Harmes
I/c: Spargo - Tyson - ANB - Fritsch
Emerg: Hannan - VDB - Weideman - Hunt

but obviously there will likely be players come in / out of form, in / out of favour, and hopefully no more freaking injuries!

really, it means out line-up on opening bounce is:

jetta - o mac
vince - hibberd - frost - lewis - salem
gawn - oliver - brayshaw - harmes - jones - viney
petracca - hogan - melksham
t mac - garlett
bench: spargo - tyson - anb - fritsch

i love what harmes is doing as a starting inside mid - he's not just tagging but winning his own hard ball and then using it well

Good OP.

I think this is a really interesting stat. I suspect that the ability to adjust, reinforce the message, move those that aren't performing or putting the acid on players at half time is the basis for the result. It's byond coincidence IMO.

As one who is on record as saying the jury is out on whether Goodwin is a good coach or not I really like this stat. It's a very positive sign.

I think whether we win other quarters is not as important as that we can leak a few goals quickly - my focus on the 3rd quarter is because it has been traditionally regarded as an indicator of a good team and also that we used to be crap at them. All in support of my theory that i can throw my personal case of MFCSS in the bin.

Also work is busy today...

The 3rd qtr used to reflect fitness. Not so much now since interchange....

This year, even last year, but more importantly the years in front of us. Are the ones to savour. So, So much better than the shite of pre PROOS, we might have tried back then but no future.  Now we have a future thanks to PR and PJ  we will continue losing quarters and giving up leads. But please enjoy the winning bits and hate the fade outs but smile going to the footy. Think I got there only once this year the rest on the TV or phone app. It is time to smell the roses but watch out for the thorns and bees.  GO DEES !!

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
