God i miss Danners.......................... THERE was a coach with personality.

To be fair, it took him years to become 'The Rev'. His first 4-5 years were nothing like the rest. But I loved his last few years in charge when he came out of his shell.

Haha, yes but with the passing of time, details like that will be forgotten and grizzled old bastards like me will simply remember him as the ultimate MFC salesman who could do no wrong.

Much like Lewis last night, Goody has no option here but to answer questions, protect his players and protect the club.  It's what he does every week.  Would you be happier if he came out and smashed a few players for their effort?  Went off his nut about the game?  I doubt it.  He has to give a press conference every week no matter what the outcome of the previous game, so if you don't want to listen to it, then don't.  I have no idea what you really expect of him in these situations.

As in life, the 80/20 rule is alive and well on Demonland.

(Not in a good way)

I loved his presser. He gave it to the payers in private ( as he should have) and backed them up in the press (as he should have). Neeld threw the players under the bus publicly and look how that turned out. Its a young group they dont need even more public scrutiny than they are already getting. Goodwin is all class imo. We're all hurting...but imo he's handling it well with the press at least.

Make Melbourne Great Again.

crap that is why we are where we are as as club time to stand up and yell

to make 'us' the supporters who are oldskool feel as though somethings gunna change? the world has evolved from pre 2000's - get em angry, that'll sort em mentality.

heavens... I grinned from ear to ear, when Goodwin spoke of 'love' between the players and care... that is what builds cohesion for teams...not tearing paint strips... I don't think I've ever heard a coach publicly talk in that manner...twas temendous...

anger may seem to look like passion, but it doesnt help clarity to make infomered decisions.

Being measured in responses is not mutually exclusive to being passionate about your players, your team, your football club , and your own profession as a coach.

personally, I'd be careful not confuse what is presented to the media and the public in these sorts of times, as duplicate of what happens within the club...

I would actually love to see the coach come out swinging. We just lost to the Aints on our home turf.

Some players deserve an absolute bake

It’s groundhog day Round 23.

When are the players going to take responsibility for being lazy and dumb for 3 quarters??

Not that you will agree with anything i have said Wise

World of Sport “Coaches Corner” was far more informative

Live to air in those days...

I want the coach to come out swinging... behind closed doors.  Jordan Lewis already mentioned the review was pretty brutal, and that's good enough for me.  Why do we need him slamming the players in public?  That achieves nothing but appease a few of the veteran supporters who think it actually helps.

Goodwin's job is to protect the players in the press and do the hard stuff when the media isn't there.

No [censored] it's his job to win a flag.

Whether you like it or not, the way he interacts with the media is how pretty much every coach does it and will continue to do it.  Sure, there are different personalities and such, but they do the bulk of their work individually with the players and do it away from prying eyes.  That's just the way it is.

Yes and we go round in circles.

I don’t give a flying F about other clubs

last weekend was a cut and paste of Round 23 last year, it shows the players don’t really care or it shows Goodwin is clueless under pressure or a combination of the two.

But if ever the coach should have stared down the barrell of the camera and stated how he really felt, was last weekend.

SHOW SOME [censored] PASSION, which is what lacks in this club. The supporters have it, The club doesn’t. What other club would accept those first 3 Quarters last week???

The MFC does, because it happened 9 months ago under the same coach.

“But everything is tracking nicely” says Simon.

Coaches operate on a spectrum in what they convey.

Neeld - throw players under the bus publicly--------------------- vs Roos /Goodwin - support players publicly, do the work behind closed doors.

Do you really honestly believe Goodwin is lacks passion?

Did you think Neeld had it bang on, when he slaughtered players in the media...and thought, that's what they need..that'll toughen em up?

Humans don't want to work for people who don't treat them with respect and dignity...it just doesn't work long term...never has, never will... @Sir Why You Little

What other club would accept those first 3 Quarters last week???...ps what does this statement even mean? How has it been accepted, or not? What do we need to see to know whether it has or has not been accepted?

Neeld didn’t bake players publicly

he stared blankly at the camera half the time with Jack Grimes sitting next to him.

He was a Rookie coach who was way out of his depth

Goodwin performs better in front of a camera but is still so far failing when the pressure is applied on matchday.

and then we read today that training was a jovial affair....

Here we go again, just like the thread about Lewis on AFL360.

Every time some posts "I'm sick of all the talk" or "you don't see words on the scoreboard", I want to punch the computer screen. People post as if the coaches and players have a choice and call the press conference themselves, like they're inviting the media to their house or something.

It's almost the complete opposite. They're speaking because they are required to.

Correct.

But are supporters required to buy a yearly Membership?

many of those Membership categories are over $1,000 a year.

It gets harder to justify the expense when history just keeps repeating.

You were asked, "What do we need to see to know whether it has or has not been accepted?".  This was with regards to your comment "what other club would accept the first 3 quarters".

I'm interested in your response to this very specific question.

Talk is cheap!

What I want to hear is the coaches saying this; '(insert contradictory comment)'.

If you watch the 98 season "hotter than hell" video on Youtube there's quite a few clips of Daniher speaking post-game. He used to refer to players in the plural quite often which you don't hear much anymore.

"We have a really talented forward line, the Farmers, Neitzs, Lyons".

He was also pretty brutal in his assessment of matches but never singled out a player if I recall.

Daniher's demeanour and language was very similar to malcolm blight, although Blight went over the edge a few times. "Pitiful Pitman" is an all-time classic media meltdown and roast of a player by a coach.

Bolding mine. That is a really salient point, and it seems it's forgotten a lot of the time.

Slept like a lamb...Thanks Goody.

Looking forward to Saturday

So much better after a Good presser ;)

If I were you swyl I would give it a rest about goodwin, your dislike of him is apparent to all on here, don't keep repeating yourself.

Yes , it's all a game...pressers. I get it. I still see absolutely no reason a player needs to open his mouth but if a game , then I'm entitled to gauge how well it's played.

For mine you need only engage the 4th estate as little as needed. You can show them polite contempt and get on with your REAL job . You can become poor viewing etc. You can make it irritable for the idiots with mics. It's been done before.

All we get are cliches ad nauseum.

The mantra of 'dont feed the trolls' can be easily applied to the media.

Part of the reason , imho, that Goodwin uttters these nonsense contrivances is that by saying them and hearing them it somehow reinforces their validity as truth.

It's all plainly bullsh#t as is our footy.

To paraphrase a well known identity,

DON'T SAY....DO

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West.
