And for those thinking Jeffy is close to the level of Rioli, I suggest you look at the AFL website '10 best moments of Cyril'. All of those highlights run rings around anything Jeffy has done.

I assume your talking about Garlett, farmer on the other hand I have seen him do things Cyril hasn’t done. 

And Garlett is doing something rioli hasn’t done he is wasting away in the magoos

Hurrah did things on the footy field that none before him have ever done, and I'd be horribly surprised if any in the future do.

We have been fortunate to have both Farmer and Flash play for our side.  Rioli is a combination of The Wiz's most special traits, as well as Flash's most special ones.  All three were beauties in their own right, but Rioli is by far the best of the three.

Matthews only excelled on the field because all of his opponents had severe concussion. 

There were far better footballers than Matthews although the AFL think he is marvellous

Hawks have somehow done it again, cashed up and ready to raid, unsure how they do it.

Rioli gone, Burgoyne and Roughhead may retire or be pushed by Clarko, Puopulo another.

At a very rough guess that'll free up $2m+

Shiel, Lynch, Sloane come on down

And really, TMAC ain't a forward yet, either; recognised in the game as a full back. Players are played where they're needed.

Cyril was a terrific footballer and was a pleasure (and education) to watch when he came into play in his many matches. However, TC, he was not anywhere near the talent of Lethal Leigh who I place in my 'best footballers, ever' at third. This will be challenged by some but 'them's the breaks' in such discussions, with so many highly offended in comparison to their estimations! Anyway, here is my ranking stated above:

1. Robert Flower

2. Malcolm Blight

3. Leigh Matthews

absolutely moonie, but he was still a midfielder not a permanent small forward

mids used to score a lot more goals in those days compared to now, at least the good ones did. suspect today a mids role in the forward line is not so deep and to keep the ball locked in the forward half. totally different game structure now with 30+ players ending up in the forward half most of the time

Yep agree

Can’t quite grasp it.

I mean I worked in finance all my life and can’t ever remember anyone ever leaving $1,300,000 on the table.

Iirc, he started as a mid but became more of a goalscoring forward as his career progressed. Didn't he win the Coleman once or twice and nearly kick a ton one year? But as you say, it was a different game back then with much different roles than now

If GCS and/or Adelaide hold firm, match or threaten to match any offer, they should be able to trade for Lynch and Sloane. GCS could possibly get a good compo pick if they let him go for nix.

In short, what have Hawthorn got to trade with? I don't think they have many picks after the Omeara deal. Can they still trade more future picks under AFL rules? They'll probably have to give up quality players to get quality.

Shiel isn't a FA and he's in contract. They would definitely have to give up one or maybe two 1st rounders for him

I don't think it's that easy for the Hawks to achieve. But I also thought that about Omeara and Impey 

afl rules don't apply for #freekickhawthorn.......they just become elastic guidelines.......much like the maggots

I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to first round pick two years in a row, however Geelong did from memory?

If Lynch wants out, AFL will help them out somehow in their twisted way with compensation, they have to start again, unsure what Hawks could offer though. Jeez I hate them!

I only said Shiel tongue in cheek but you're right, he's contracted, they'll raid someone else no doubt.

You are kidding. I watched the top 10 highlights from the AFL website and thought to myself he really must be better for his work off the ball. Bayley Fritsch has better highlights at this stage.

Not knocking Cyril I just couldn't believe how plain the highlights were.

Surely you jest. I've read some silly comparisons to Rioli on this thread, but Bayley Fritsch has to take the cake. Time to take the rose coloured glasses off mate.

the role of a small fwd has traditionally been one of the hardest gigs in football, and a graveyard for many

even the best small forwards careers have been punctuated by good games and many average or bad games

today it has probably gotten even harder with the forward press and the congestion and the demand for a small forward to be a defensive fwd at the expense of his natural attacking instincts and finding himself often in the defensive half because of the need to run both ways

it's not surprising when you look at the total career of a good (permanent) small fwd that his overall stats might look a little on the lean side. quality doesn't always get measured well by stats

His first half in the 2015 GF was probably the best half of football I've ever seen in a final ... every time the ball came near him he turned on the electricity.  A superstar amongst superstars. 

As for the stats ... the eye test always wins out.
