NRL heading for TV ratings win over AFL
At the season's halfway mark, the NRL is eclipsing the AFL as the most-watched football code.

AFL no doubt paying the price for poor Friday night scheduling, but also constant media commentary on poor state of the game.

    I’ve not watched as much, but being married to some one who lived in NSW and QLD, one of the first things she said to me was how surprised she was that we attended games so much here in vic. Up there the NRL supporters she knew all just watched it at pubs or mates places.

    The AFL TV product this year has in the main been poor especially the prime Friday night games. NRL also have a Thursday night game which gives them another slot to gather ratings.

    its not the scheduling that is the main culprit, IMO. scheduling is a smaller issue, to the real problem.

    NRL has for a while held greater tv audiences than AFL but no where near the attendences at the games. The AFL is way ahead in live attendences. Also look at the people playing the sport and AFL is way ahead as well. Soccer surprisingly has the most people playing it.

    This is true, is it merely a population per state thing? Or any other reason?

    Not according to the article,,,, AFL have had better TV audiences since 2011.

    "At the halfway mark of the season, the NRL is set to eclipse the AFL as the most watched football code on TV in 2018. If current trends continue, the NRL will have a higher premiership season audience than the AFL for the first time since 2011. "

    I find this the most worrrying comment:

    "Compared to 2017, AFL TV ratings are falling even faster ... down 13.9 percent to the end of round 9, while the NRL season, which began two weeks earlier, has recorded a drop of only 0.6 percent to the end of round 11. "

    Ground attendances are good but they aren't where the money of the future lies.

    There may be something on the population per state. I know in NSW they tend to ( or used to ) watch the NRL at the leagues club or over a few frothies at a mates house. Don't know about QLD though.

    I enjoy NRL on the odd occasion, it will be played in empty stadiums in 10 yrs. I am always amazed by how few people are in attendance when watching it.

    I read through a google search about attendences between AFL and NRL. The site also included rugby union and soccer.. I got those statistics from that site. NRL had greater tv audiences than AFL. I can't remember the site name. Also the AFL is the 4th most watched sport in the world ????

    Is the NRL Friday night game still chosen by Channel 9 six weeks out as it used to be?

    According to Wikipedia it still is but I am not sure.

    "The Friday night game is considered to be the most watched game of the week and many NRL clubs have openly stated that they appreciate the publicity given by these matches. The Nine Network choose the game they consider to be the "match of the round" 5 or 6 weeks in advance. This system has both positive and negative consequences, as it increases the likelihood of a good game played between two in-form sides, but does not allow fans or clubs a large amount of time to know on which day they will play in any given round ."

    The Broncos pretty much get every Thursday or Friday game which helps a lot.

    That is the concern to me... and I think we should be working together with the NRL to hold both our positions and share our skills, working together.

     

    Foreign foot ball sports are the enemy, IMO.

     

    But our issue today is the product we put out there.  The congestion is horrible, because of rotations, and the lack of one on one match-ups.

    The highlight skills we once watched, have slowly dried up. And are too-few, these days.

    Look for Collingwood v Essedon every friday night next season.

     

    And every ad between goals featuring Scott  Pendlebury defeating the Hulk, to gain possession of the advertised product.,

     

    Qld is a yuge state. There is no option but TV for many here. And N.S.W?  Dunno. Just tight asses I guess.

    It has been ridiculous for nigh on 4 years now. 

    Carlton have 49k members. Yet they are viewed in the minds of AFL suits as if it' like it's 1997 and they are merely coming off a bad trot of a couple of years.

    Think about it. We had 23 years in the cold and it devastated our support base. They are coming up on 23 years without a flag and Gill and Fitzy still reckon that they deserve Friday night slots. 

    No surprise as to why ratings are down.

    I like watching it too Cards.

    Have had since the 80's SOO games.

    These days the NRL game is getting more skilled, due to the Storm, and they're kicking has learnt from Aus-rules, here in Melbourne, and to a lesser extent in Sydney town.

    I enjoy the Organic simplicity of the NRL game, without all the arrogant ex-player media commentary we are showered with, in Victorian-AFL media...

    Agree.

    Soccer is forced onto kids in schools, but most of them drop off the game once they have a choice.

    90 minutes of nothing, interrupted by the occasional life-threatening flare and singing to combat the boredom, will never compete with a true physical contest in this country.

    Having said all that the AFL does need to stay on top of things, in particular the congestion around the ball which can ruin games.

    Ironically Melbourne are playing an open style of game which is not only great to watch but devastatingly effective.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
