So he has gone backwards, my point, he lacks consistency, when it gets hot he disappears

He is an outside accumulator

Everybody is entitled to an opinion, personally to paraphrase Talking Footy 'overrated' for me

This isn’t the Watts thread, you should know better.

I’d love Billy to become a player and demand a spot in the 22 but it’s clear to people with even half an idea that it’s going to take quite some time to happen - if at all. I can’t wait for it to happen when someone like Gaff is available.

He is a free agent, so most clubs will have a look

It is rumoured we are interested

My opinion, everybody is allowed an opinion, unless of course you subscribe to the group speak, opinions are neither right or wrong

Always thought of him as an accumulator, rather than a ball winner, goes missing when the heat is on more often that not,  ie the Sydney game last weekend

If we sign him, means the club rate him, so will support him as a MFC player, there are players on our list at the moment that I have opinions about that are different to others, again it doesn't mean one is wrong and the other right

Unfortunately some on here can't debate, they just deride

Of course we are interested, he is a free agent, lot of water under the bridge yet though, no issue with the club if they bring him in, I just don't rate him as a player, everybody has a different opinion, each week Goody picks a side, not everybody likes who he picks

I just don't understand the absolute hysteria surrounding him, he may be a reasonable player, but he is no superstar

We’re going to lose some experienced players over the next couple of seasons and don’t have many players in the mid-20’s age bracket who are best 22. For the right price and considering he is an RFA, Gaff would be ideal.

A superstar wins B&F consistently and wins the Brownlow, my answer to Picket, his win in 2015 surprised everybody, and that was a couple of years ago, he is an accumulator, and he is not fast, where this impression comes from I have no idea

Doesn't matter about my opinion, it is my opinion, so it is not irrelevant

Stretch is being developed, it may work, it may not

Lance Franklin - Superstar

A single best and fairest and no Brownlows, from a bloke who may be in the top-20 all time players....

Interesting theory Saty.  All Australians are also a good indicator of the quality of a player.....

I think Gaff is overrated

Think Stretch has the tools to be developed into a player who can fill the role everybody thinks Gaff is made for

The only point I’d like to make is you were wrong and didn’t admit nor apologise

He hasn't managed a West Coast B&F or a high finish at the Brownlow, so superstar may be a slight overreach on your part

Those against Gaff coming to Melbourne are not being reticent, expressing opinion openly

Yep, I get people expressing their opinions but I think they're not looking at the bigger picture.

...you can't judge him by a game like Friday night which was a glorified game of rugby in many respects.  Nor can you go on the outside player reputation he's often tagged with as this year he's shown he can get his own ball.

With the changes coming into the game next year, and they will come the game will open out a lot more and it will be imperative to have runners like Gaff. It's probably our biggest weakness.

An open forward line is going to be great for us with Tommy Mac, Hogan and Weid, Oliver will be unstoppable around the ball but we still need class runners bringing the ball in.

I've just grabbed the popcorn.. watching saty getting his pants pulled down over and over and being shown how so far out of his depth he is with the modern game is actually quiet hilarious!

Carry on please.

Wrong why, I explained my answer, rather than take potshots like others

Why apologise, his B&F shocked hardcore West Coast supporters, because I know a few

What's wrong? can't handle a different opinion, you didn't answer my post, but I expect little else

Interesting that lesser mortals leave this site, as if they dare to be contrary, they get abuse/derision/etc etc

Hey faux tough guy, your normal running in from behind to king hit, without actually contributing to the topic, classy

It is an opinion of a particular player, if you don't agree and have a contrary view, how about expressing why, or is it just the

"oh my he is a free agent, let's get him'

If you know West Coast supporters who were shocked he won a best and fairest why did you say he hadn’t won one?

You’re a pathetic poster. You never admit you’re wrong or apologise to anyone. I never attack other posters but your posts are so far from credible that I actually can’t tell if you’re serious. In one post you say Gaff never won a BnF, then turn around and say that everyone thought it was a surprise, just lol! Gaff for 6 years in a row has had top 8 finishes in their BnF, with a better bunch of mids than Melb has seen for a long time. He turned 26 yesterday and has plenty of upside.

I don’t care what the club does, I’d prefer Neale but happy to back the club in due to their recent form. I wouldn’t pay overs for him but with an increasing salary cap and retiring players over the next two years I’m sure the club can make it work.

Im still laughing at your Billy Stretch admiration, nice kid, but a rabbit in the headlights who has never shown pace or run at AFL level.

The funny thing is I don’t care about your opinion on Gaff, all I’m saying is you have been proven wrong again.

On ignore you go ?

Gaff has had games like last Friday night, agree he has been showing more inside this year, but when the heat was on against an aggressive inside midfield, he went missing

And why are you worried by supporters view of Gaff when you continually tell us “the coaches know best”?  Do WCE supporters or coaches vote in their B&F?

I am not worried, gee paraphrasing, misrepresentation, runs the whole gamut of trying to point score

Forgot this was a schoolyard for 'grownups'

"Superstars" regularly win B&F my point to Picket, he won once, in a victory that was a shock to West Coast supporters I know, some think he is brilliant, others have the same opinion as me, an accumulator and nothing else, in comparison may I say nobody was surprised when Clarry won MFC B&F

If we select Gaff, cool, can then sit back and watch the angst if he doesn't chase defensively or go when it is his turn

Your fascination with his efforts on Friday night is interesting.  It's like you're basing your entire feelings around Gaff on one game.  His year has been stellar outside of that game and he has shown, numerous times, that he can perform when the heat is on.  With so many in and under types he would complement our midfield group superbly.

Billy Stretch has been on our list for years now and, if anything, his contributions have gone backwards.  He doesn't have the footy IQ or running capacity to be on a level like Gaff's.  I'd love for him to do it, but on the output I've seen I highly doubt it will come to fruition.

With all due respect Saty, I think you are wrong here.

Last year against Port in an elimination final he had 34 touches. Then in the next final he had 25, so hardly went missing when the heat was on.

Grand Final in 2015 he had 34 also. So I think he has proven that he can stand up in big games.

While he is obviously not a brute in the middle like Oliver, he's a different type of player and one we don't really have. I don't believe he is worth any more than $700k a season though, unlike someone like Oliver who in 2-3 years will be easily worth over a mill a season.

Due respect? Not sure he's earned it...

He's talking absolute rubbish as usual.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
