Unfortunately I can't see us winning this game. Richmond has won the past 12 or 13 games straight at the MCG and they defend it extremely well. With Hogan and Garlett being our main avenues to goal so far this season, I'm struggling to see us kick a big enough score with the likes of Rance and Astbury roaming their defence. Tigers by 5 goals. 

Pedersen just has to play to assist the forward line. Weeds cannot make that impact at the moment.

Fully agree, Clint, their teamwork and support for one another is the difference. This enables their star power to come into the play so frequently on a red carpet of teamwork.

Weideman had 1 more possession and 1 less goal than Pedersen against Werribee. He's a better ruck too. I think Weid just shades Pedersen due to his ruck work.

When he makes a contest he brings the ball to ground very well. There’s also absolutely no confusion who should be jumping at the pack, making the forwards stay down!

Thought it was pretty unfair that no-one seemed to advise Fritsch to stay down so the big boys could go to work because Fritsch is just as good on the groundwork as he is, aerially. Agree about Pedersen bringing the ball down - even though he really only makes those dynamic, scoring spurts for 2 qtrs of footy, these days.

And talking of history, yes we do have a very rich history with the Tigers. So this annual game could be the Checker Hughes Cup.  Particularly as the game was conceived to honour his distinguished war service and his role at both clubs:

• A star midfielder for Richmond in three successive Grand Finals, including the 1920-21 triumphs
• Hughes coached the Tigers into the finals in each of his six seasons, for five Grand Finals and one flag
• He then took Melbourne to September seven times, culminating in six Grand Finals for four premierships and the first draw (against Essendon).

And, re named us from Fuschias to the Demons we are today.

We need a tall forward who can mark on a lead and also take the occasional pack mark.  With Hulk drifting up the ground off HF to help out much of the time we often don't have a tall inside our 50 to bring the ball to ground or take the odd pack mark on the multiple entries we are getting right now.

Pedders can pinch hit in the ruck as we know which leaves our mids to focus on their role inside and out, instead of rucking (which must be bloody draining and totally ineffective anyway!)

Having said that Pedders can also dish up some horror performances like he did against Brissy so he might have lost a few brownie points with the coaches.  Weids might get the call up also.  Who knows.  Whoever the FD thinks is the better option is fine by me but i just hope they are selecting on good form from Casey rather than promise/potential.  Plenty of time for Weids to work his way in if it isn't this week and this week might be the worst timing for him on such a big stage if he is the nervous type.

Personally i still think we need an extra powerful tall forward who can kick accurately with distance from around 50 meters (if there is someone lurking!).  Pedders is 31 and maybe only 3 to 4 years left.  Weids a medium term work in progress.  A long range goal kicker would mean the opposition has to defend a little higher at times which might help to provide a bit more space out the back and provide us with a few more opportunities for our smalls/mediums to work their magic in.

There are both 'good' and 'not as good' elements of these two selections.

I'd like the Weed in to learn how to play the Pedersen forward game - better for him to learn this and feel this than rucking occasionally to no particular effect; at least he can kick a goal or two, as well and take a mark.

I'd also like Pedo in the side this Tuesday so that Hogan can roam as needed away from a deep forward position, and so Gawn can have a relief / respite ruckman in place for recovery purposes - and Pedo can also provide short spell wizardry in our forward line - a role of marking, shepherding, blocking and delivering to teammates with great effect - plus, the bloke can kick goals, too, anywhere from 50 metres out. The thing that I like so much about Pedo, some games he wins for us with these bursts and sets up many recoveries from both recent and past games since he has been at the MFC. Some of us actually go to the big matches just to see him do this again, as we had seen in the recent past. 

Who's our matchup for Jacob Townsend ?  He's kicked 24 goals in his last 9 games and was assigned Lever on GF day.  He's 187cm.

Our defensive matchups will be fascinating.  When Martin is going forward he's playing full-forward and Riewoldt roams high.  Who takes Martin when he's at FF ?  Clearly not Oscar or Frost.  He's way too fast for the former and way too smart for the latter.

Hunt is the same size as Martin with the same sort of speed.  Is it him ?  No, as we lose his drive and he's never really played the super tight role.  Is it Hibberd, or Vince ?  We don't want to lose Hibberd's drive either.  Maybe it's Vince.  Wagner is the right size, but he'd make mince meat of Wagner.  Does Wagner keep his spot and go to Townsend ?

is Oscar agile enough to handle Riewoldt ?  Is Frost smart enough and tight enough to take Riewoldt ?  He's athletic enough.  But Riewoldt would have a field day.

Who's Oscar's matchup in this game ?  Does he take Townsend, who tends to play deep, or do they back him in against Riewoldt ?

It's not as simple as just dropping players.  Matchups and form will dictate selection.

Is it possible a smokey like Balic may be given an opportunity. Other than kicking a bag of goals a few weeks ago I do not know much about him. What sort of footballer is he? Has he any speed?

Whill Balic is starting to show something Optimis I'm not sure this week is a good one for testing the waters given last week's debacle.

I like the idea of Weids coming in for a long look at it but at the right time for both him and us 56.

His next foray at AFL level is probably his 4th (or so).  If he doesn't hit his straps a little this time around it might be a big hit on his confidence.  Would hate to see us do another Watts on him this time around.  Rnd 7 vs the Saints is looking ideal.  Perfect time for a minimum 3 match foray with the next 2 weeks against Gold Coast and Carlton.

Pedo offers decent form for this week's crucial match and a whole lot more forward/AFL experience.   He has the size he can throw around to get the ball to ground, rattle the defence a little and, as you say, provide some structure when Hogan goes roaming.  Pedders is no great relief ruckman but anything's better than a Harmes or similar medium..

While I'm not sure he would be classified by many as a wizard, he definitely brings others into the match around him and can lay a hard tackle inside 50 also to let the opp know he's about.  Perceived pressure if you like.

I would be very surprised if he doesn't get the call up 56.
