Re: ANB injury from Training Thread.

The Herald Sun has had a crack at producing injury lists for all club’s in this article - All the latest injury news at your club ahead of Round 1

FWIW, this is Melbourne’s list:

MELBOURNE

Jack Viney (foot)
Jordan Lewis (calf)
Dean Kent (shoulder)
Aaron vandenBerg (foot)
Oscar McDonald (back tightness)
Joel Smith

The Demons have conceded midfielder Jack Viney won’t be fit for their season-opener against Geelong. Viney, who has battled a persistent foot injury, could still line-up for Casey in a VFL practice match against Box Hill but the Dees have already ruled him out for Round 1.

“We have decided that to give Jack the best preparation for the full year, he will not be available for selection for Round 1,” football manager Josh Mahoney said last week.

The Dees, however, are optimistic Jordan Lewis will recover from calf tightess in time for the Cats clash. The ex-Hawk missed Melbourne’s second JLT match with the issue.

Defender Oscar McDonald was Melbourne’s only injury concern from last Thursday night’s match against the Saints.

And for good measure, Geelong’s list:

GEELONG

Gary Ablett (hamstring)
Patrick Dangerfield (hamstring)
Rhys Stanley (calf)
Stewart Crameri (knee)
Sam Menegola (calf)
Scott Selwood (ankle)
Lachie Henderson (knee)

Patrick Dangerfield will have scans on his injured hamstring today to determine the extent of his injury after pulling up short while kicking against Essendon in Colac on Sunday. The star immediately left the field and sent a major scare through the Geelong camp. The Cats won’t take any risks with the star and will likely make sure he is fit for the majority of the season rather than rushing him back for the season opener.

The Cats could be without two of their star midfield trio with Gary Ablett racing the clock to be fit for the clash with Melbourne with his own hamstring issue. The Cats said initially Ablett’s hamstring was only minor but he didn’t feature at all in the JLT Series and given he has a recent history of hamstring problems, it is a concern.

Rhys Stanley is also in significant doubt for Round 1 after hurting his calf, while Nakia Cockatoo (calf), Stewart Crameri (knee) and Sam Menegola (calf) are also racing the clock to be fit.

Scott Selwood and Lachie Henderson have all but been ruled out of Round 1 with ankle and knee injuries respectively.

It feels as though the injuries to ANB, T Mac and Harmes are only very minor, and they should have no difficulty in being ready for Round 1.

Our injury list (touch wood) actually looks very good for this time of the year and we should have our best side, minus Viney, available for the opener against the Cats.

Fox sports saying that Tom McDonald has early stages of a Hotspot on the foot. Similar to Viney. Claiming he is in doubt for Rd 1 as a cautious approach will be taken. They are also saying Nathan Jones still suffering back spasms. Maybe our list is not as healthy as what we think.

Well that explains why TMac has been MIA at training/JLT for the past 10 days or so. Jones was walking a few laps this morning at training then left. I would think TMac, Viney, Lewis, ANB and now maybe Jones will not be in the mix for round 1.

At present we are on track for a normal injury year for us, 5 to 10 in rehab at any stage of the season. Which I suppose is to be expected, it’s just that the top sides in every season usually have a great run with injuries, example the Tigers last year

Maybe one day we'll give the Misson a missile in to the sea.

Tom's as fit as anyone, doesn't need to overdo the running and get a hotspot. Oh well. In Pedersen we trust.

Jones is a worry given he's had neck surgery and a broken back. His style of play has taxed his body. The positive is we have an explanation for why he looked a long way off his best in JLT 2. JLT 1 was rust, I wasn't worried, but he struggled last week. Epidural's can work but you're hoping it relieves the inflammation to allow for the rehab not just a short term pain fix. Surely they wait until he's right to play him. That might come in the next 2 weeks but I have my doubts.

Not as worried about Lewis, ANB, Harmes and others yet. Think they'll be alright.

What has happened to Weideman? I literally forgot about him until today. Is he injured?

No training with the Casey (reserves) squad. Not injured and coming off preseason surgery so needs time.

Both ourselves and Geelong will have a couple of best 18 players out by the look of it...I don't think we can use injuries as an excuse if we don't get up

Again, gotta love that we hear about this through external outlets and not the club.

Why would the club release injury information that only panics fans and helps the opposition?

Journos work long and hard to chase stories and if they get one you say well done.

Foxsports news is not the most reputable source though STMJ

Unless I hear anything from the club (ala Viney ruled out announcement) I'll take this with a grain of salt

FoxFooty said Viney was a certainty

It was reported on 3AW at 6.30pm.

I have little doubt the reports are accurate.  It is what it is.

No biggie.  Pedersen can cover McDonald for a couple of games if need be.  It's not like he's Tony Lockett.

Wait and see - but if the reports are accurate, then it certainly sounds like McDonald's 'possible hot-spot' is on the minor side of things.  If they are indeed going to have him back into full running next week, and that's the conservative approach, then its probably not time for wrist slashing just yet.

And the article is right when it states that missing some training and possibly round one 'pales into insignificance weighed up against losing him for much of the year.'

Fingers crossed.

I liked the match up of Tom in the ruck against Blicavs who can make things happen with his running. That said, Cam is probably better once the ball hits the deck. Hard to know which I'd prefer up forward. Tommy more reliable but Cam's good games as a forward - when he's on his bike and tackling are exceptional.

My main concern isn't round 1, it's getting Tom healed quickly.

If it's like Viney's then we could be looking at most of the season.

...was wondering where Weed would fit this season but you never know what's ahead.

Even if it's a stress fracture (and they're saying "hotspot") they're supposedly a 6-8 week injury.

Which is why I think Viney must have suffered a setback (pain) at some stage.

No, not at all. It could be long term but I think we can cover him.

MFCSS would see it as the end of the world.

It's not the end of the world but I am concerned we seem to have more than our fair share of these foot injuries.

It's always a tricky one 'ProDee'.

Hotspot seems to be code in the AFL for a stress fracture these days and he came back from ankle surgery again pushing things hard early.

Before I get howled down by many for not being a doctor, as an observation from afar it seems that 2 players (both renowned hard trainers) have tried to come back a bit too soon from foot/ankle injuries and have had problems.

Maybe the club will be more conservative and work harder to hold players back in the future.

The currents handling of Viney seems to indicate that may be the case...

Interesting points.

Viney apparently ran slightly differently after the plantar fascia (which led to the stress fracture in his third metatarsal), so one does wonder whether McDonald's ankle surgery has led to a slightly different running pattern also, which could perhaps have meant he favoured a part of the foot, which in turn led to a "hotspot".

Is it coming back to soon, or the body (mind) over compensating for a recent injury in the biomechanics of running ?

I'm not equipped to know.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
