One reason I can see is that the FD see good things in Maynard and are keen to select him as the 'designated rookie' able to be selected from round 1.

There was a recruiter who once drafted Morton. He had a full-time job as a recruiter. He presumably spent hours and hours pouring over footage of Morton. He no doubt interviewed Morton, and maybe even ordered a psych report on Morton. He perhaps spoke to Morton's school-teachers and sports' coaches, possibly even  Morton's mum: who, for the sake of economy, we'll presume here to call Mrs.  Morton. I do have my doubts that our star recruiter cared much for trends in physical conditioning, but, regardless, the point of this story, is. simply, Morton.

There's a difference between saying 'this guy looks good' and 'I think we should take this guy at 29'. Has anyone ranked the top 40 and have them in order or something?

Just as there have been any number of recruiters who did the same and passed on players who subsequently went 3rd/4th round/rookie, and then went on to be AA and win Brownlows.

All cat a rookies can play from round 1 next year, no need to wait for an injury. Cat b still would have to wait. Might be more a show of faith more than anything

there is a long list often publicised in the media at our football clubs expense of our poor track record in the draft when it was the most critical time to get it right. Craig Cameron leaving during this period and then us appointing Barry Prendegast as head recruiter is the worst appointment in the history of this club. Worse than any player picked or coach hired. He was hopeless. As you know, he left for carlton before we could give him the sack, in a completely different role nothing to do with recruiting. I've said on many occasions, we would of had a good team if I was in charge of recruiting during this time. They'd all be the same type of player, hard tough ball winners, but still, you wouldn't have a toumpas or a lucas cook bust. Add in Gawn and Howe, who they did pick when I wanted them too.  Anyway enough pumping my own tyres whilst lamenting.

 

There's good reason west coast have done what they have this year with getting heavily invested in the second round. The talent in WA are around those picks and should really fill needs of theirs. Unfortunately they are also needs of ours. Goal kicking mids and small forwards. In order of who I'd pick this year with the players who I think will be around/ available at our picks are.

there are a couple of other's I wouldn't be to upset with in the mix but depending on who we do draft at 29 and 31, will affect on the later choices

That order is my order of preference (especially the first 4). Like I said, others would come into the mix with frietch/ling(who should be well gone by pick 47) and brayshaw, depending on who we do get with the first two picks.

Get those first 4 and I'd be over the moon. convinced the first 2 will be going to west coast before us though. they have 3 pick before us before we have 2 picks, before their next choice.

time will tell

 

 

A couple of players who may be around at our picks who I wouldn't mind us taking. Spargo had been fringes of the top 20 before he hurt his shoulder and missed the Championships. He probably slides a bit as others have been playing and getting exposure.

Bailey was good for the Allies in most games I saw him play, with an additional couple of centimeters and a little bit more consistency in his ball use would be further up the order.

Ross can use the ball well and has an intriguing athletic profile and might be a reasonable fit on the wing.

Scouting notes: Has a great burst of speed and he isn’t afraid to collect the ball and burst out of a stoppage getting distance on himself from his opponents. The right footer is usually a clean kick but can have the odd poor game by foot. Wins the contested ball and tackles well.

Last month: Was one of PACs best through the midfield against Scotch in South Australian school boy football. In the 2017 South Australian State Championship game against Henley High, Bailey was able to break free at the stoppages and was damaging getting the ball forward. He won best-on-ground honours for his performance on the night.

Scouting notes: Small bite-sized midfielder who cracks in hard. Despite his size he wins the ball in the contest and tackles hard. Is one of the few midfielders who has a good goal sense and is a hard match-up when deep inside 50. Was originally zoned to GWS but it is now ineligible for GWS to select him under changes to their Academy zone. Has had shoulder surgery which will rule him out for the season.

Last month: Missed the entire month recovering from shoulder surgery. Was invited to the National Combine and will still interview with clubs there.

Jackson Ross

Outside Midfielder/Medium Forward (Haileybury College/Eastern Ranges)
22/06/1999 | 192cm | 75kg
Scouting notes: Booted 29 goals playing as a centre half forward and on the wing for Haileybury College in the APS school competition. Comes from an elite tennis background and is still quite raw in football terms. Has a long kick and is able to use it on either side of his body. Very athletic and has a National Combine invite.

Last month: Booted five goals against Calder Cannons in Round 16 in a very strong performance, and whilst was quiet in the game against Geelong Falcons the following week – he did some good things on Saturday with nine disposals and three tackles. There’s plenty to like about Ross and a big finals series could push him up clubs boards.

He's a category a rookie so he can play round 1 straight away. If he was category b he would have wait until their was a long term injury to play.

I agree that Jackson Ross has some good attributes but not Top 50 IMO.  Definitely a good athlete but doesn’t get enough of the footy.  Saw him in 3 games and whilst he showed skill, I had 5-8 players ahead of him at Ranges. 

Will probably be late pick or a definite low Rookie pick.
