i know its not the jack watts thread but weideman is so far ahead of watts at the same age its not funny.

has shown an attack on the ball far superior and also shown better vfl form. weideman is going to be fine.

I agree somewhat with your sentiment. I don't think he's a selfish player, but he's definitely a shocking user of the ball. We have one of the worst midfields in the league for disposal efficiency, I think there's serious concerns about a midfield of Jones, Tyson and Viney which makes the apparent departure of Watts all the more alarming. All of these three are notorious for the infamous 'long-bomb-forward-in-hope'.

This team is nowhere good enough to finish top 4 in my opinion

We lack quality in the midfield on the wings and forward crumbers

And we still have no real stars

Just looked at Robbos' top 50

We are still a middle ranked side on talent

Kelly would have made a difference but we are stuck with Turnover Tyson and wide eyes in the lights Salem

Here's hoping our potential stars shine this year

Fwd: Garlett T.Mac Watts

Ruck: Gawn Tyson Viney

Int: Salem, Melksham, Frost, Pederson

Emerg: O.Mac, Vince, Hannan, VDB, Harmes

Garland has more footy sense than O.Mac and Frost put together and is a great one on one defender.

Hogan at CHF can run at the ball, I think he is more of a Carey than a Plugger and T.Mac just knows how to piut them through.

Vince has lost a step, just when I thought he had a secret fountain of youth, he is depth now.

Pederson needed for his marking ability around the ground, we were bad in the air.

Until Watts is gone he is in my best 22

Frost to give Garland a spell

Salem as a defender and Melksham subbing Neal-Bullen (either could start to be honest)

HOT DAMN! that was super hard!

You picked OMac with confidence i see. T Mac and OMac go hand in hand.  No T without the O. Both signed there last contract on the same day.

A injury free Brayshaw will be a regular in the best 22 at Melbourne.

- Happy to see Oscar McDonald out of the side in favour of Joel Smith.
- Petracca to own HF
- Hannan: I right him highly. Can get boot to ball quickly and can kick clutch goals.
- I like Harmes. He can light it up when he's on. Just needs continuity with his security in the team.
- Vince: he is the last picked in this side. He got really lazy with his kicking last season (especially his kick-ins).

Balic will be a Dee.  His summer will be interesting.

I really like Joel Smith.  He's another watch.

We'll use 32-35 players, so plenty will get their turn to impress.

I don't want Gawn, McDonald, Hogan and Pedersen in the same team, so Pedersen reverts to depth.

I hope AVB gets a decent run of it, because I think he can provide value.

Bernie is just about cooked for mine.  But he'll be good for 10 or so games.

I really hope Billy puts his hand up and forces his way in.

Finally, I'm a real Brayshaw fan.  I reckon he can be a gun.  Let's hope the bad luck is behind him.  He's the sort of talent that could be the difference between 6-8 and top 4.

Closest to the pin this one, I reckon. I'd probably have Hannan ahead of ANB in that forward pocket, but it doesn't matter too much. They may as well be.

I've always been a fan of Tyson, but I worry about his spot next season. Unless he can cement a spot as a pure mid (which would have to be ahead of probably Jones), I don't see him being versatile enough for modern footy. He doesn't have pace and his kicking isn't a weapon. It'll be an interesting year for Dom. Can he elevate his game or will he become trade bait at the end of 2018?

Tmac named in most line-ups at HF - but went back in our crucial match against the Pies. Did I miss something (other than Tomald doing what Tomald is prone to do in the back-line)? Is this an assessment and projection up-the-ground derived from our opinion of his best position, or based on some indication from the FD?

Mahoney has confirmed in more than one radio interview that Tom will play forward next year.

Yes I think Tom MCD turnovers will not be tolerated any more. Had 6 years of it and not improving.

Showed ability up forward and of course was a key forward in the under 18s

Updated for the current trade period - serious question - Can Pederson play defence? I don't like any of Lever/Frost/Omac at full back?

Lastly a left field option, but putting it out there - Petracca as a defender - could he/would he cope? The reason I suggest it, is he doesn't have the tank-he is not ready for a mid role, and with Hannan, Harmes, ANB, VDB, Melksham, and now Balic, all being forward lurkers we have enough forwards. But they are undersized for a key defender role, (and Lewis Vince Jones, Wagner as well for that matter). I want more than the one skilled, big key back we have in Lever, and which was why I wanted Garland to keep playing. As much as I dislike Rance, (really really, I think of him as a Michael Long type cheat who should be called out and not celebrated), he is a useful gorilla for Richmond. I think Petracca is the only one strong enough and skilled enough to learn/play a key backman role -  that is on our list at the moment. I think O.mac and Frost are honest players, but they are not gorillas yet, and even as they mature into gorillas, as till now am not sold on their ball skills or decision making.

Jones has an above average kick rate per Champion Data and was using it as well as anyone in our team and better than most of the comp pre injury. He hasn't been a long bomber for a long time now.

What he sometimes is - is a conflicted player around the packs where he won't kick originally because it's not the game plan but will try to handball and when it doesn't work he'll get caught with it and bomb it as the only option. Viney does similar. Tyson is the most long bombing of that trio because he'll do it in space. Get Jones in space and he's a beautiful kick.

i agree on tyson, i couldn't find a spot for him.. gets the ball, just doesn't do much with it. and when he kicks goals its always once we have the game by the scruff of the neck and the other side aren't defending well and he just lopes in and puts it on the boot. this team does look tough to beat for sure, but i worry that we still need SPEEEEEEEEED.. carn draft! chuck us an outside runner ay!

Harmes/DJ - pressure forward

Happy with the back 6 or 7. Vince and Joel Smith in reserve. And Wagner who I don't mind in the right match up. Keen to see Paddy McKenna play as well.

Most of the starting midfield pick themselves. Time to pick Tracc as a mid who goes forward not the other way around even if he's close to 50/50 split. 2nd wing spot worries me. If Brayshaw gets fit he could lock it down but I think he's still best as a contested player on ball or back. Salem could move to a wing but it's asking him to run a heap which is his weakness. When he doesn't have to run his tank low he plays well. Melksham started to lock down a half forward spot but he has the tank for the wing. Balic and Petracca are all suited to rotate midfield and half forward more than wing. ANB you just want to leave in that high half forward spot where he covers ground and tackles. No Lewis for a month. No way he has 22 games in him anyway so let him rest whilst the pace is off. He'll get suspended anyway belting someone faster than him.

Forward it's all about the pressure and spread and speed. No Pedersen/Weeds unless we want to get freaky and move Tom McDonald through a wing. Vanders 3rd tall. A couple of midfield types up on the flanks with high work rates. Then 3 amigos of Garlett, Hannan and Harmes.

I thought the same thing about Richmond this year, even upto round 20 I didn’t think they were good enough, I think the key is not so much personal but injuries and having a settled side, a fit hogan gawn jones and viney for 22 games would mean we played finals this year that I have no doubt, no way Richmond win a flag if riewoldt, Martin, cotchin and rance missed as many games as our 4 best players did you could argue they might not make the 8

Hear hear DS. Nat's kicking was an absolute  revelation early in the year when he had relief in the middle and switched to the semi-outside/half-back. And exactly what we need in terms of penetrating, line-breaking kicks. It soured somewhat later in the season due to the above-mentioned reasons, but among the forward-turnovers trying to force the ball, their were still plenty of instances where he got us out of a jam at half-back in tight matches.

Backing Joel Smith and Harley Balic to have huge preseason and be there in ROund 1.

Bugg, Vandenberg and Vince a bit stiff, but a good sign I didnt have them in the 25. Any or all could easily play round 1.  Not to mention Corey Maynard, and the forgotten man Dean Kent.

A strong draft from Jason Taylor and our depth will be immense.

The back 6-7 shapes as being pivotal in 2018.  How will we structure up ?

I had a conversation with my lunatic Brother the other day and he agrees with Terry Wallace and would NOT play Oscar, Frost and Lever.  I said Frost is quick and reasonably agile, so can play small pretty well, but he was having none of it.  Despite Frost recently signing a new 2 year deal he doesn't have him in.

Wallace said he'd have Hibberd play the third tall, which would allow us to have 4-5 runners.  Wallace noted we played our best footy with this structure in 2017 and I agree with that observation.

Most sides listed in this thread, including mine, have the 3 talls picked (OMac, Frost, Lever), but will we go for a more mobile back 6-7 notwithstanding Frost's pace ?

Like anything, it will involve gameday matchups, but I do see merit in only having two talls and using Hibberd as the third.  How many forward-lines running around require 3 194cm plus defenders ?

Wallace rightly pointed out that we chopped and changed and were never really settled in the backline, which is another valid point.  We need to settle on a structure over summer and it will be interesting to see which way they go.

I'm with your brother.  I like Frost's closing speed in the zone but that's about it.  Looking forward to the Joel Smith experiment continuing and hope he can cement a spot.

If VDB can get his body right he can be a weapon in the forward line.

Really lacking in good kicks, Hibberd is the only one pretty much.

I think with our best side kicking is ok, Frost and Tyson still a worry and TMac playing forward mitigates it a bit

Run and carry around the middle... I think is the area that needs urgent improvement.

Whether we can shuffle what we have around or some other solution pops up?
