Were we not with reach of the top 4 until injuries and a tough schedule hit? These types of generalized comments undersell our list and paint everyone as a turnover merchant.

I agree. Just reacting to those who undersell Watts.

We are going to get peanuts for Watts. I'm not pleased about that.

I could stomach trading Jack for a fair return, but we aren't going to get that.

The market for Jack does not seem to be very deep. Which is if of note given that at 26 he should be in his prime.

If Jack goes to Port Adelaide he wouldn't be living there. He could afford living in a posh suburb a la Toorak. Glenelg might appeal. PS Just remembered a top suburb for Jack. North Brighton should appeal for its name alone.

He might prefer a suburb adjoining Glenelg. Brighton!

Well if the club were considering keeping him....they aren't anymore..

Lets look at the possible validity of that ground laying question.

Would/is the MFC considering keeping Jack ?

You might suppose for this to be the case there would needed to be overtures by the club to that effect.

Some would say that is exactly the situation. Look they point out, the door's not closed ! He has a contract, we only suggested he explore options !

On the surface it certainly seems Melbourne would take Jack back.

The actions of the club remind me somewhat of passive aggressives.

If the club were only mildly interested in Jack satisfying some idle curiosity it might have all been done inhouse. His management could have entertained enquiries. It could have all been put away. No one the wiser.

However, much of this started at season's start and continued through the season with public belittling and the club announcing Jack was free to entertain offers, all subject to agreement etc.

What this really meant was....push off. The club has hardly been fussed, it can hardly care about return for a trade, its likely to have to pay some of Jacks pocket money.

All screams ' love you Jack, please come back'

Tbh. The club's been very careful to maintain a straight bat and tightly lipped.

My understanding ( built upon a number of avenues of input ) is Jacks been a dead man walking all year. Jack just didn't know it til now.

Believe it or not i really couldn't care.

What you see and what you get dont always tally.

I feel genuinely sorry for Jack. He , like myself, like many of you love this Footy Club. We get to stay, he has to move on. His journey is now elsewhere.

Back to the opening premise. No , the club's not / nor ever has considered having him back . They've been far to active in getting him to leave !!

The truly unfortunate thing is this episode is only a sympton of a deeper problem. Hopefully that doesn't derail the hard work and good intent of some.

No one's holding a door open ;)

The chase in all likelihood was thwarted . Ill let you figure that out ;)

His price ? Whatever Port offers. Bit of a buyers market effect here.

JM etc might ask for X. ( Bit if showmanship pretence really in this instance ) .. Port will give Y....and why not...we don't want him. Port get a bargain.

Might be as simple as #30

Agree... Melbourne handled this terribly. I’d hate for them to be negotiating on my behalf

Or Jack is finding that at age 26, when he should be at peak of his powers, the market for his services is limited. Think of all the Melbourne based clubs who dont seem to have expressed any interest. Maybe this indicates that clubs don't rate him that highly. Which is odd for a player of his skill.

Yes, we need more blokes who can bulldoze their way through a pack and then kick it straight to an opponent.  Then they can fiercely contest another ball-up in the centre circle.

Winning your own footy is a good start.

Getting it back off the opposition is also highly regarded.

Keeping it is very good also.

A pick between 20-26, without us having to pay his salary. A pick in the 30s with us eating some of his salary sucks.

Agreed

If 30 & 33 can be then again bundled into an early pick in the 20s, or for a player that we think is worth that, then I say go for it.

The team has been set non-negotiable KPI's under Goodwin, and, for whatever reason, at least twice he broke them. That he seems shocked is probably the icing on the cake. He got a bloody good contract and then coasted. Same as he has done for all of his time with us. A highlight here and a great Q there, doesn't make up for the days he wanders around making half arsed efforts. Every player has to go hard in every quarter of every game - or go somewhere else. Players like him will never win you flags, but they can sure help lose them.

I also reckon that the 'poor bugger... he went #1 and has all the pressure in the world on him' is crud. It's been the other way - 'I went #1 so I can get away with not working my arse off like that bloke that went #72'.

And popular doesn't cut it. You can be the most liked at the club, or you can be the bloke that the coach and captain DON'T throw their arms up in the air every time they are asked about you. And loyalty is BS too. We have invested more into him than he has returned. If he was loyal he'd be saying 'No. I'm not going. What I will do is work at every facet of my game. I will be the first there, the last to leave, and go harder than anyone at any contest - just like my captains do.'  Not holding my breath on that one.

Stay or go. I don't mind either, but FFS pull your finger out. Don't be another Sylvia.

Professional heckler, or just an amateur attention seeker?

Hoping to turn pro. But since you ask, I found your 'my way or the highway stance' on Jack Watts perplexing. You talk in absolutes and that's what I don't like. You say he was coasting, but he was also injured and returned having to play catch up. Prior to his injury he was plugging holes left right and centre including rucking. You've also put words into his mouth, quote included. Do you know his state of mind in respect to being chosen number 1? I'm doubting it. In respect to loyalty, clearly he hasn't wanted to go. He is being forced out or so we are to believe by the comments made. Where's the 'BS' there?

I do get that it's a business but, to my mind, you've effectively labelled him a failure who chooses when to compete and when not to. I don't see it that way, acknowledging he has limitations. 'Stay or go. I don't mind either' is a strange comment in respect to a player who has been a good servant to the club.

The Sylvia Plath gag was shite. That bit you got right.

hopefully he will send us a selfie

Jack flies O.S on Wednesday so the announcement will be made early in the week. Not reported that he visited Sydney late in the week as he snuck up north and back under the radar. One of his magers who looks after his shorts business is planning to liaise with hime from Adelaide. Port will be his nominated destination and he finally has his head around moving. The only way that wont happen is if MFC reneg on the deal which I doubt even though he is 2nd to Gary Ablett for delivery into the forward line.

Apparently this is a story. It sounds like Jack still doesnt know why he is being moved on or still doesnt get it or is mad which I get.

Anyway it will be interesting to see him at Port if thats where he is to end up.

That is...bizarre.

It was Mad Monday. Goodwin had some melanotan left over from his Essendon days. It's the drug that gives you a fake tan and a three day .... erm ... let's just say something that gives you "performance". He opened the cupboard and found Watts had stolen his stash.
"Jack, what did you do with my mellies?"
"Your what? I thought they were eccies!"
"You stupid bugger! Give 'em back!"
"I can't! I don't have 'em. I sold them down the nightclub."
"You what! They were my last ones!"
"Sorry coach."
"Hand it over."
"Hand over what?"
"What you got for them. Hand it over."
"I can't exactly ... hand it over ..."
"Listen f**ker. Whatever you got for those drugs, give it to me. Right now. Or you're out the door."
"Well ... okay ...."
"Well!? Hurry up!"
"Alright. Undo your belt."

The rest is history.

Hahaahahaha. Classic.

Hey Mazer, can i have some of what you're on.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
