Gun.

He was 6th after 14 rounds, then got injured for a month, then was ordinary.

His first 2/3 of the year was good

No, he was 6th after 13 rounds & it took a few for him to get over run by more consistent performers, including players who also missed matches.

And it probably would've been higher had he had a better pre season.

21st place. thats about where he's at actually. one of the last to get picked in the 22.

Then again, Coach G started picking on him preseason before any imperfections could become apparent.

Do you ever reflect on your imperfections? I know I do. The reflection disappears in an instant...

well said.

Yep, typo with the games and I corrected that.

The rest... meh.  We'll never know, but he was heading towards another 2016 type season before he went down.

We are very clearly not trying to push Jack out for his lack of talent.

Listen to every speech made by the coaches tonight, they all talk about setting standards and building a culture. Watts clearly falls outside those boundaries we are trying to set.

Exactly. How people couldn't see this is beyond me. Too many supporters letting their emotions get in the way.

Show me a game in 2017 when Watts showed a lack of effort, application or discipline

Terrible against Port, North and GWS on return from injury.

Pretty ordinary against North and Hawthorn early in the year in important games.

Was forced to ruck against Geel and Richmond after injuries to Gawn/Spencer in games and in both games he was great when going in the ruck for a quarter or so before being completely spent. I understand it isn't his position but after nearly a decade in the game he should've been able to compete for longer against Zac Smith and Nankervis.

EDIT: It's really unfair to hold the games back from injury against him as he wasn't right and counting them in his B+F total is harsh as well, doesn't tell the full story. I'd be more interested in why he was so bad in those games than putting weight on it.

Bad injury management from Watts or the club? Bad selection by the coaches or by Watts saying he was right to play? Bad offseason leading to poor fitness base or not?

You do realise he was 6th after round 14 from which was one game after he got injured? Clearly, his first half impressed the coaches.

Played 16 games, same as Frost. Finished with 40 votes less.

He was obviously good in the first half of the year and did what the coaches wanted, had to take on rucking duties and battled manfully.

I wonder if he'd been a good boy in the pre season whether he would've been spent in last quarters when in the ruck..... anyway mute point, he's gone, could've been anything, if he wanted...

A bit confused after hearing people talk at the B&F, and mixing that with the message of Josh Mahoney ... I get the feeling that they will genuinely trade him, but the club is setting the price high. My gut is that they have a few trades in mind but they need some decent picks. 2018 will show a true indication of Watss worth whatever happens....

the MFC Will not be losing a Watts for a firesale price... but I think he will still leave the club given there are three to four clubs after his services

Agreed. Top 6 and then stalled due to injury, loss of form and being relegated.

Clarry needs too take Watts under his wing...

That could work!

Clarry too mentor Watts.

Take a look at who came 22nd... ? That guy must be worthless in your eyes too huh? Watts beat Gawn by 36 points... and true Gawn played 3 less games, but even if he had 3 best on grounds on those missing games, he would not have beat Watts....

Fair enough that you think he should be traded, but show some respect FFS!

what is your point? Gawn was horrible this year.

Point is the snide comments of some people aren’t necessary, I like a lot of people expect he won’t be here next year, but the ‘gun’ comment shows a lack of class and respect for a player on the way out.

Pretty clear I would have thought!

I just can't see any of the metaphorical mindset speech Goodwin gave tonight having any impact on Jack - apart from making him squirm in his chair.

Think his point was pretty clear. Good players both of them not performing at their best.

You're pretty sure of your opinions on Watts, most people here are balanced about him having weaknesses and maybe those aren't good enough going forward.

But you try way too hard to put him down to nothing. Something about being embarrassed in front of your mates? Maybe you should harden up!

All points considered so far, I've come to the conclusion that after 65 years following the Dees that this question is as perplexing as Ronald Dale Barassi going to Carlton !

Is there a team in Byron?  Jack apparently is looking for a trade there....

As a random aside, Shaun Rehn coached the Byron Bay under 14's while I was living there. But I don't imagine we'd get much more than a packet of organic quinoa chips and perhaps some tofu knives in a trade with them for jack.

Heard the Byron Bay Pub sold for an absolute squillion recently . Strop "n Delvene made a quid. 'Did you have a finger in it ?

Behind some guy we picked up from an amateur league ?

Yet in front of our other two key tall forwards.

Plainly 21st is not good enough, but, if you're going to base such assessments just on his B&F tally (sans any context such as missing games and his form prior to his injury), you need also to put the slipper into our prize forwards who finished well below him (again, ignoring any context for their poor performances).

Surely?

Nah - preference to stay blind sided on them facts

So....is Wattsy staying or going?

Anyone the wiser?

You mean the one who had to deal with the death of his father and cancer? Or the one who has been on the list 2 years?

It’s moot point not mute.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
