The Bulldogs don't have many big forwards so what we do with our three big defenders is a huge question.

Wagner apparently played well for Casey and probably shouldn't have been dropped in the first place.

Bugg continues to frustrate, could Kennedy come in for him?

Stretch would be a nice inclusion as well, not sure who comes out.

I would feel better if Melksham wasn't in the team, but maybe he can back it up playing on Bontempelli.

Bugg continues to frustrate in what way?

Weird isn't it. Bernie tags Sloane and gets plaudits. Melksham does the same to Pendlebury and is in line to be dropped! Talk about unconscious bias!

I guess it is not always clear watching the game live just who is responsible for whom.

Now it has been pointed out that Melksham "was on" an ineffectual Pendlebury we can see things in a different light.

Drop who ever played on Treloar, I thought he was overrated until this afternoon...

Might upset many but I think JKH should come in. 47 possession vs Coburg and excellent yesterday before being subbed at halftime. Provides run at Etihad and will be fresh. Three 6 day breaks coming up. We will need some level of rotation.

This is one of the ways in which I don't feel qualified in discussing Melksham. Same with Tyson. Some players go about their business without getting noticed much, while others are somehow front and centre in what they do. What I did note, in the latter portion of the match I watched, was how crazy influential/important Oliver was - and for all his plaudits this year, I still don't think he gets the recognition he deserves. Small, barely perceptible touches were absolutely crucial in the last.

I'm going to be one of those types who just says no. If we need fresh legs and rotation, Stretch is waiting in the wings (perhaps literally).

Whoever gets picked, they have to shine because after all, next week's the defining game of the season.

I feel I will be in the minority here, but I'm liking what Buggy brings to the side at the minute.  He is a deceptively good mark, he puts on some pressure at ground level AND he knows how to hit the scoreboard.  Granted, he has wasted opportunities over the last month, but I think that will improve for him over the coming weeks.  He is offering more than guys like Kent, JKH and even Harmes, at the minute and I think he deserves to keep his spot going forward.

Bugg was good today, had presence in forward line, won't drop him and doesn't deserve it

Gawn comes in, pedo plays deep forward. Bugg goes out

Bontempelli is too big. I'd put Melk on Dahlhouse if anyone

Buggy is playing his roll, frustrating when he is missing set shots i know but he's impacting the scoreboard and applying pressure in F50 and around the ground kicked 2.1 in a scrappy game can't be flicked.

Hogan and Gawn are the obvious whenever they are ready.  Spencer should come in after a hit out in the 2's.  After watching the last Casey game, Maynard is the one who really impresses me and I'd love to see him get a run - he is easily the most athletic and hard at it player there.  Melksham, Harmes Bullen and Salem were all pretty poor today, and should be the first to go.

In -  Gawn

Out - Neal Bullen (22 ineffective touches, constantly bad decision making)

Oliver's second had was one of the reasons we won the game.  Imo he has quickly become our most important player and how he performs directly impacts the team outcomes even if he doesn't actually hit the scoreboard. In the third he dominated, 11 touches almost all in the center square and a bunch of clearances.

They're not coming off the bye, they played Thursday.

True, totally forgot about that.  Still an extra 4 days than us, so I am gonna continue to whine.

Well we had 16 between Gold Coast and today so I reckon we'll be fine!

He kicked it a lot more in the bit I watched as well - boot-to-ball move-it-forward Vince-style. Not sure if it was ideal, but many of them in were in very tight situations and I expect it would have been a directive.

In - Gawn/Spencer, Wagner & Stretch

Out - O Mac, Harmes & ANB

I'm an O Mac fan, think he'll be a very solid defender in time, however, in certain situations for team balance, he's the one that makes way when you don't need 3 tall defenders.

Harmes & ANB are just terrible with ball in hand.

Changing my out to Harmes instead

Remembering ANB had some nice moments in the last quarter

Spot on, Deeman. Effectively an 8 point game for mine - a bit of a cliche and agree with it or not we need to tip scales toward 7-5 before the month ahead of DS and TIO along with three 6 day breaks

Agree with the sentiment completely, Franky. But surely based on the above OMac stays in...

In: Maximus Gawn/Spencer - Pedo rotates out at deep forward

Out: Harmes, ANB

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
