Champion Data annoy the hell out of me when they try to predict using their data.

Their expertise is in telling us what has happened by their numbers....

Id go one further

They only expert at providing stats in line with their metrics.

Some are absolutes. Marks kicks handballs. Frees

Many are subjective. Tackles, kicking efficiency and the like.

They provide numbers.

Not overly interested in numbers.

I agree. Despite my frustrations Omac may well morph into a handy regular defender. I think hes better off  developing as opposed struggling. A Mackenzie type would provide a fillip but i still see what he would bring and what Omac might provide as different roles.

If we are indeed (as a club) seeing the FB role being an inhouse development ( whoever it may be ) then a fillip is ideal. If our strategy requires a FB player outright then Id definitely look a Lever.

Taylor and Co seem good at finding players. Will be interesting to see where we go on this .

Yeah exactly, i think oscar definitely has his moments and i am happy for us to persist with him as we did with Tom, but if he keeps having these constant brain farts every game as well then maybe they need to go in another direction, whoever that may be with. If we were to get a Mackenzie type, i agree he just provides that little bit of extra bit of help for them even if it is only for a short period.

Watching Crows vs Cats tonight and Lever is bigger than I thought. Also playing with more mongrel than I remember.
I reckon he would be a perfect target for us. First round pick to Crows, good cash offer to Lever, bring him across and our key defenders are sorted. Oscar can then develop at Casey and may be decent long term.
Kid has leadership potential too as he is touted as Adelaide's next captain by their fans.

Has played 43 games and is 21.

Is anyone watching tonight?

If demonlanders are convinced Oscar will become a 'great' key defender over time, I can't even imagine what they'd think Lever will become?!

Lever is a class above omac...just is.

Has a little mongrel...i like that

Different player to oscar

Lever injured again. Third time this year. Would have to be a consideration.

I agree. I hadn't seen much of Adelaide at all in recent years so didn't have a handle on Lever (is there a joke in there?) and just saw the last half tonight.  Even though their career stats are similar, Lever does look so much more polished than Oscar etc. I now understand the hype.

Yes!

what was the injury? i gave up watching

he was looking very, very good when i was tho

Lever is a few classes above the McDonalds.

Unfortunately, he'll probably stay with Adelaide.

We may as well develop Oscar & Weideman for the same position at CHF or FF if Lever/May, Tmac, Frost are our tall defensive spine going forward, save injury. That way there is insurance on the forward position if one of them doesn't make the grade and another does and insurance on a defensive post. Double insurance if they are both adequate forwards and one of them nets us a trade.

If not, then what was the plan for Garland next year? Delist him and give OMAC the Garland role that contends with a new recruit?

Would absolutely love Lever.

However, if we're looking for a defender to provide reliable intercept marking and spoiling, we potentially already have one in McDonald. Tom that is. He was tracking AA for the first half of 2015 doing just that, getting across for the the dead-ball spoil and dropping into holes for the intercept mark. But sometime thereafter his role was tweaked with a greater offensive focus - because there was basically nobody else. He was our zippiest defender outside of Lumumba and we didn't have any decent kicks anyway. He was also given the responsibility of marshaling our back-line.

It hasn't quite worked, and his defensive side has slid since - most notably with respect to spoiling and marking (outside of the mitigating factor of our high zone and when the defense is reasonably set - unless it's a stamina issue, and the ground coverage is impacting his ability to contest as effectively in the air?). But we've since added serious line-breakers in Hunt and Frost along with clean distributors in Hibberd and Salem etc. We also have the likes of Lewis and Jones who can coordinate our defense and hold our structures.

Goodwin wants all our defenders to be offensively-minded, and it won't greatly change things, but perhaps we can swivel Frost into more of Tom's role, and Tom can shift back to a more defensive focus and take Oscar's spot?

With Talia and Hartigan at the Crows when does Lever ever play on a decent key forward? He looks great as a third tall interceptor but not much I have seen of him taking the number 1 job.

Oscar will be a great player for the dees whether in defence or forward.

forward? he's no where near physical enough.. he still looks like a frightened kid out there. seriously. he has a better kick than his brother (which doesn't say much) but i seriously cannot see what people see in him.. yeah the coaches are playing him, but what are the other options? i reckon he'll be gone in a year or two. seems like a nice kid, but just soft and apprehensive. he'd never take intercept marks like jack leslie did late in the game against the eagles yesterday..

Rocky, many of us (me included at a later stage) thought Jack Watts was not up to it,as it turned out Jack proved us wrong. Also some of us wanted Hunt and Harmes delisted, may I say no more.

O Mac third for spoils is not bad

With opposition teams targeting Oscar in one-out situations, it's understandable that he features.

Unfortunately, ineffective spoils are also counted as spoils. A spoil is a spilt ball that an opponent gets a hand on.

Again, that spoil stat doesn't really tell the full-story.

The quality defenders are the guys that feature in many of these stat categories.

STMJ, is that a list of stats or rather a shopping list of talent to plug the gap?

Both, given May and Lever feature strongly.

Lever is a must get.

but he then isn't listed in the top one-on-one contests, go figure.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
