It's ticked off for certain teams, eg vs the Saints if we had our home strip we would have a dark back making it (theoretically) harder to distinguish on TV, which is why they've forced us to wear the white strip. With the red back you don't have that problem. Hopefully they'll let us wear it against a few others as well.

I would love to wear the red and blue every week, and if the powers that be tick this one off, then I am delighted. But personally, I would have expected if the AFL wanted clash jumpers, they would want them to be, you know, less clashy.

Obviously this isn't unique, as many other teams have similar subtle changes, so obviously we have said, stuff it, if they can all do it than so can we.

I assume you are having a dip at me, and again, completely missing my point. I think most AFL clash jumpers are a joke, and as I said, we obviously saw other teams and decided if it was good for them, it was good for us.

Richmond's little bit of yellow down the side another great example of a clash jumper joke.

If they don't enforce proper clash jumpers, may as well just wear the home jumper and white shorts.

I did think your earlier comment was odd, as I see it as a viable alternate strip. But the Collingwood & Essendon alternate strip show what a farce it really is. Good on us for having the red back. White shorts worked for years as you say.

but if it doesn't clash (where appropriate) then it is a genuine "clash jumper" the club has said they are using it for round 1 and "some other clash rounds". i suspect that at least this year it won't be the only clash jumper the club has to use.......but it's progress

I agree with you re Essendon.  But, not Collingwood!  (As much as I hate them!)  Their home jumper is mainly black (especially the back, which is all black, apart from the number).  Their alternate jumper is primarily white (the back being all white, except for the number).  While Eddie's joke of "we have white stripes on black, and as an alternate we have black stripes on white" might be a pain, the fact is that their alternate jumper really does satisfy the requirements, and I have no problem with it...

Fair enough. I suspect our differing opinions is basically just I expect clash/away strips to be vastly different, and that probably comes from growing up watching as much soccer as footy. In soccer, an away strip is completely different, and it probably also explains why the white jumper never really bothered me as much as others. Although I did draw the line when Brock McLean came out in the long sleeve silver jumper.

The rationale, logic, argument that the filth pose is exactly what substantiates our use of a red back; it changes a predominantly dark blue jumper to a majorly red/lighter one.

It is no different to the difference in the Collingwood home and Collingwood clash differential

What are the chances we'll be able to wear this one vs Essendon? Would be great to see us playing them in a strip that isn't white. 

Incidentally that's always one of my biggest bugbears with the fixture. We very rarely get a home match against Essendon. 

This may fly in the face of popular opinion here, but the main confusion for players, crowds etc. is when the player's backs are turned.  This is resolved by the new red backed Melbourne guernsey and even the Collingwood one, which looks farcical in the above image, but when worn on match day makes the players quite easy to distinguish.  We probably spend too much time and attention focusing on the front of the jumper where there is already different colours and patterns - the backs of most jumpers are where the confusion lies.

FWIW I don't hate the idea of a white clash strip, I just hate most of the design choices we've made over the years.  Now that we have once again changed the tone of red on our jumpers (looks much lighter now) hopefully the League accepts this as an appropriate alternative.

Kinda off subject, given it's not about MFC.  But, did anyone see the Richmond game the other night?  Richmond wearing yellow.  Guess what colour the dopey umpires were wearing?!  Yep!  YELLOW!!  Go figure...!

The teams may not have clashed.  (The AFL managed to get THAT bit right.)  But, kinda looked like Richmond had 21 players on the ground!! 

Who is the brilliant individual in the AFL in control of such matters?  My two yr old grand-daughter could do a better job!  Fair dinkum!!

I would hate for an AFL rep to trip over this and see that we're pretty pleased with a clash strip for the first time and that common sense has finally prevailed!

We have set the precedent with the red back, the third alternative needs only be this. It is that simple. Even I, as a white jumper hater, would buy a jumper like this

we definitely 'have to' have a third jumper. AFL have mandated as such. Remember we had an all red jumper last year, which we managed to wear once.

Barrie - this reminds me of that absolute farcical night we played Footscray a few years ago.......the night we wore the pink jumper........and the genius at AFLHQ put the maggots in pink  too.  Late in the game as we were attacking with a real chance of a rare win, one of our guys mistook a maggot for a player and passed to him....Dogs cleared it and saved the game.

As I recall DumbItriou made some smart arse comment and brushed it off. 

 

PS this 'clash jumper' is the best one yet.

I seem to recall they've worn a predominantly red jumper against our preferred home one.
