There's no points system win there and it relied upon us drafting well. Unless there's a gun available at pick 10 this year that the Saints were going to grab they'll come out ahead with good solid drafting at 23 and 36 and an exciting and well timed opportunity next year to make a big move.

Not sure how Hibberd is considered a top 10 calibre pick when he hasn't played good football for 2 years. And you have to consider that the Bombers weren't prepared to match our contract offer, and basically considered him expendable. I'd rate him in our 10-15 category. 

Gawn, Jones, Viney, Tyson, Vince, T.Mac, Hogan, Watts, Jetta, and Garlett all have better exposed form than Hibberd, and I'd imagine that young players like Oliver, Petracca, Stretch, Hunt and Brayshaw would be pushing to surpass Hibberd in importance to the team.

Hibberd addresses a need in our backline, but let's not kid ourselves about his capabilities or achievements to date. At his best, he was borderline AA, but so was Lyndan Dunn. 

I'm happy to get him, but see him as a role player rather than someone who'll be the difference between winning or losing games. Lewis is a different kettle of fish.

There is so much upside for the young and the older lads-  and I think the recruiting (including coaching/ancillary staff) has been phenomenally strategic - no doubt all clubs aim to be strategic - but geez, the development into the boys and the 'kulcha' - it feels so far removed from even 36 months ago.

Hibberd has to get fit and return to his peak form but if he does I think he could easily be our best defender and certainly our best and most prolific rebounding backman, therefore helping fix a big weakness. By champion data (and I don't know the exact stats) his intercept possessions and metres gained are both ahead of any defender on our list. If he can keep that up then he'd be in the top 10, probably ahead of Jetta (who's excellent at what he does but shouldn't have to do so much), Garlett (similar to Jetta but not as excellent) and Vince (who can just float between positions) but maybe behind Petracca and Oliver. 

The confidence in having another defender who will attack and win contests and then be composed with the ball could be really important in maintaining the way we play when under pressure and not giving up those runs of goals as we are so prone to doing. Lewis in the midfield should also help with that, but I'm hoping we are strong in that area anyway and therefore as a single player he's less important.

Must admit to being particularly pleased that Carlton hung fat on the Gibbs trade and in so doing exposed the disingenuity of Gibbs and his manager in requesting a trade to Adelaide under the banner of "personal issues".  Whilst I'm not in any position to doubt that there weren't personal issues involved, they obviously weren't of a sufficient nature that Gibbs was prepared to do the right thing by Carlton and request they get him back to South Australia (Port or Crows) in whatever manner best mitigated the loss of his services to Carlton.  

In robbing Carlton of any possibility of competitive tension in the trade discussions, Gibbs leaves himself open to being accused of looking to jump in to a premiership window, having concluded the Carlton rebuild has a ways to run yet (given the list age profile) and considering he's 28 at the start of next season.  Quite where the sanctity of the remaining firm three year contractual commitment fitted in to these deliberations isn't immediately apparent!

I think it is fair to say that St Kilda did a good job meeting needs and trying to cover their depth problems. But in terms of what we've given up compared to what we've gained, what a huge win we've had.

Now he could've taken a big pay cut but he wanted to move to do the right thing by his family and being the main breadwinner drastically lowering your wage isn't doing the right thing either.

I'm all for Carlton holding firm, but at the same time I don't think Gibbs did anything wrong asking the question.

He's had multiple top 5 B&F finishes, including when they were a finals team.  Have you seen him play ?

Do you think the club would give up pick 29 in the absence of a first round draft pick if they didn't consider him a top shelf defender and exactly what we need ?

12 months out of the game when you're 26 and uninjured is hardly an issue.  This bloke is a competitive animal.

Jetta and Garlett ?  "Better exposed form" ?  Hahaha. Bi I have tremendous admiration for Jetta, but he's a rung below Hibberd as a footballer. 

Garlett is as soft as butter and the antithesis of Hibberd as a footballer.  I don't see Garlett as a regular senior player in 2017 unless he has a very strong mental correction.

I would've liked us to get involved in the pick trade frenzy in the last day or so to try and get back into the top 30/20 picks. Ultimately I'm not unhappy but it's a write off year for drafting as far as we're concerned. We already have stacks of young talent so it's not a major concern but you wouldn't want to make a habit of it.

TMac and OMac have both turned into very good players from picks you would call a write off. That said I feel this might be a good chance to do pick up some real smokey's that might be a bit different. Perhaps look at a quick small forward, or maybe an outside the box ruck/forward.

Either way I think we've used what we had available to us to better our team for 2017, you can't ask for much more.

Gee i don't know, maybe because that's generally where the best kids are drafted from. But the strengths of these kids are pretty much already known, the recruiter really earns his money deeper in the draft, when they are required to gamble on and back their own judgement (over other recruiters). Case in point, Jayden Hunt.
