2016 Player Review - # 8 Heritier Lumumba

In the event that the decision is made on H's retirement at any time over the coming months, then the solution for the club in terms of what to do with its list would be simple. Replace him with Joel Smith by way of an upgrade from the Category B rookie list. We won't be found short of a player and have additional space to find other Category B rookies.

I don't rate Smith, I'd rather be in a position to get Barrett as a DFA.

Don't think he'll go until after Nov 30, which I think is the last list lodgement date. If he goes after that for 'medical' reasons then he gets a payout from the AFL as well as can negotiate with the club. The club may have asked him to do that, so half his wage is saved from the salary cap, and we might be able to bank $200k or so and that will help retain or attract players.

I would ask for those who still hang onto any thoughts he might hang around - why can't he do the running sessions, or at least appear at training? From all reports he's been pretty much unsighted which even with an injury is pretty ordinary in a team sport like this.

As late as Tuesday, Lumumba had consulted further specialists about his condition.

doctor shopping?

Wow....set to retire and possibly sue the club?

Gee didn't see this coming. Could smell a lawsuit a mile off.

I'm inclined to think he's just wasting everyone's time now. I've got sympathy for players suffering medical conditions but there's been a sharpness of oddity around this whole situation from day one.

The club has been negotiating with him for some time over his claims, a situation made more difficult by the fact he parted ways with his manager. The club consequently approached the AFL Players' Association to assist in negotiations.

seems to be burning quite a few bridges

Will not play for us again, claiming he was blocked from playing games last year, wants to sue cos his 4th year wasn't auto-triggered.

Heritier Lumumba set to retire, could take legal action over concussion treatment

What 4th year when you're not even playing a third?

[censored] me.

So he's claiming that due to last year, he now can't play enough games this year to mean he gets a 4th year. I'm assuming that it means they're regular season games and he had to get to 50 games played to get an automatic extension.

Exactly. Whats stopping him from playing and having an awesome year next year and earning another contract as opposed to having it 'triggered'. Just get on with it.

When you read the headline it is implied that Melbourne were negligent in looking after his safety.

To read that he is allegedly upset that they were being too cautious is laughable.

His contract had an auto trigger for a fourth year if he played enough games. He can no longer reach that trigger as he didn't play enough last year. He is claiming the club held him back on purpose so he couldn't reach the trigger this year. He says he felt fine but the docs wouldn't let him play.

Don't really care what it costs, he now must be gone as his claims are a nonsense.

I get the impression he just wants to retire with the rest of his contract paid out (two more years), and the club obviously balked at his demands. The situation clearly escalated if the MFC had to seek legal advice finding grounds not to pay out a fourth year of his contract (didn't reach triggers).

Rich of H to cite the MFC's cautious approach to concussion as being "blocked" from playing games. He'd be suing us for playing him while concussed if the situation were reversed!

Replace your "wasn't auto-triggered" by "now can't be auto-triggered".

Hard to see what case he has. But if you thought you were right to play, and the club was stopping you, and you were left watching the possibility of another year and another $x00 000 disappear, I don't know that you'd be too happy (even if the club were right).

Sorry I edited it.

I'm assuming the trigger is 50 games played for the club.

If he played every game this year and we made the GF after losing a qualifying final, wouldn't that mean he gets to 50?

He has played 24 games.

23 rounds, 1 bye, so 46 played.

Qualifying final, semi, prelim & GF makes 50 played.

Messy and unfortunate. Not helping himself, even if he is frustrated with how things have turned out.

Even if he was right to play he wasn't good enough to deserve a spot in the team.

Exactly, rather laughable of him to suggest he was automatically good enough to be an instant selection just because the docs cleared him. For that reason, he hasn't really got a case here.

Maybe the trigger is more than 50. who knows really.

Could be, either way it's rather ridiculous that he's even making these claims at all.

The Prince thinks he knows more than the Doctors.

I am sure the Docs wouldn't Block him from playing out of spite, for exactly this reason.

H. Maybe just Maybe the Doctors were looking after your health long term.

Concussion is only now being fully understood

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
