If he wants to get out with dignity he should make sure that the resolution is swift and he bows out silently rather than in the blaze of publicity created by the ridiculous accusations made about the club's treatment of his concussion issues.

 

It is such a confusing situation.

He is seeking more information about concussion - it sounds like that at moment he can't play ( or doesn't want to play ) because of concussion risk and not overly happy with the approach the medico's have taken - that can only mean that he thinks they cleared him too early  - however on the flip side it sounds like he is unhappy that he hasn't played enough games to trigger a contract extension.

So in summary - H is not happy that he wasn't allowed to play and not happy that he was allowed to play....

The first five words sum up (at least the latter part of) his career, indeed his life. 

Clearly he wants to blame anyone or anything else for his loss of interest / will to play the game.   One moment he wants to play but the big bad Demons won't let him; next minute they are not helping him get over his concussion.  Weird stuff.   Ironically his super hero, Cassis Clay, had his life ruined by unmanaged concussions: maybe he really does want to emulate him in every way.

But it is reading as so contradictory.

From all that is printed ( my first mistake relying on that) is that he is upset with his handling - that can only mean that he believes the medico's advised him to come back too early.  If I accept that is indeed the case, on face value then I get that.

But he is also upset that he hasn't played enough games to trigger the last year payment of his contract ? 

The two problems are absolute polar opposites aren't they ?

As yet he hasn't exactly ranted and raved himself on this matter (for once). It's been the press and the club/club players making all the noise.

It's a shame that that the tight lips policy the club has employed over the last few years hasn't been able to resolve this matter without the need for it to be paraded through the media circus.

If true, the situation reflects very poorly on H, but IMO we do not come out smelling like roses either.

I thought his complaint about the medical handling was that they prevented him from playing when he thought (or now thinks) he could have played. If so, he is not inconsistent (whatever else he is).

Sue, the problem with that line of thinking is the ongoing tests that he is claimed to be having.

But he is inconsistent as despite him feeling he was fine to play he didn't again for the rest of the year.

Hmmm.  Lawyers, dispute, AFLPA, "different cat", doctors opinions, sacked player manager, non appearance at training, conflicting stories.

Yep, nothing to see here.  If legal action hasn't been considered (sue the club), I'd be very surprised. It may not have been threatened but it certainly is in play.

Because he claims the club stopped him playing for medical reasons  - with which he disagreed. So that is consistent. 

I agree with ManDee that the fact he kept having tests might weaken that position, but on the other hand if you were told you couldn't do something for medical reasons but wanted to, you might keep having tests to find out the truth either way.   I'm no great fan of HL's, his behaviour is odd enough, but I don't see that inconsistency is the issue.

It was initially reported in The Age that he was declared fit to play in the last 5 rounds of 2016 but chose not to.  Then The Age reported that he believed he had been unfairly restricted from playing so that he couldn't reach his contract renewal point and was threatening to sue.  That's the inconsistency.  But I'm with ManDee - you can't believe everything you read - I think there's a fair amount of media speculation going.  Mahoney has indicated this in the most recent AFL site article.

I think it's fairly safe to conclude, as others have here, that HL's AFL career is over and that he is trying to maximise his payout.
