AFL Preliminary Final Weekend 2016

Heard an interview with Peter Gordon on SEN this morning talking about all the things he has to do as President to get all the off-field things and people set up for the GF. 

I think he said that Hawthorn are helping him.  Did anyone else hear that? 

I don't like giving Hawthorn credit for anything but if they are helping Gordon it is very magnanimous of them and great sportsmanship.

Yeah I heard it, and it's exactly how you say. Gordon admitted that there are numerous off-field things to put in place, and the Hawks are helping them out, as they have staff who are experienced with GF week. Great gesture by the Hawks.

Geelong played on 27 Aug, 9 Sep and 23 Sep.

That is pretty much 1 month with 1 game.

Have to feel for Bob Murphy.  Heart and soul, loyal as they come.

Would be like us getting to the GF and Jonesy missing out.  Unimaginably heartbreaking.

• They along with GWS also played 0 games in 1 month in September 2015, might have also been a factor. Both preliminary final hosts were 10th and 11th the year before
• Both away winning preliminary finalists were in the finals last year and have better win/loss records over 2 years.
• Geelong and GWS last regular season game at the MCG and Spotless respectively, weren't very good performances. Geelong dismal against Richmond. GWS losing to WCE
• 1-6 was separated by 4 points for the first time ever. 7th 4 points below 6th.
• 7th had the same points as Brisbane in 2003

There are so many variables in this debate that make the one years sample size irrelevant. This was always going to be the most likely year we see two teams with the week off, losing. Need a bigger sample size to judge the effect of the bye week.

BUT if the incentive is to reproduce the incredible week 1 spectacle of fresh clubs going hard at it with 3 of the best matches of the year and discover if preliminary final was an anomaly or unfair to the prelim hosts, then it's a far better incentive than kneejerk scrapping the bye because two home preliminary finalists lost

Not sure whether you are taking the mickey or not but there are a number of media commentators who are using that analogy. If you can't see that there is almost a 4 week period where they played 1 game I can't help you

no mickey, jnr. i just can't see it. i can't see a period of time between 2 games of nearly a month. maybe you were listening to brian taylor?

actually it's 3 weeks and 5 days (the day before the next game)

and on that day it becomes 2 games in 3 weeks and 6 days which is still less than a month

and on that day it also becomes 3 games in 3 weeks and 7 days which is also less than a month (an avg month in football season being 4 weeks 2.5 days)

 

so, i find it very misleading to say 1 game in a month conveniently ignoring the day before and after, and still being short of a month

anyway, i now know where you are coming from. (btw i didn't need to study hard at school )

It seems that what Beveridge brought to the dogs was his relationship skills with the players.  By all accounts Goodwin has that with our players.  Goodwin and Macca: the yin and the yang.
