Who would be currently leading the B&F

Featured Replies

So I was thinking the other day who would be in our top 5 at the moment for the Best & Fairest. We've had quite a few even performances but I would say that Viney would have to be a lock at the top currently. His form has been outstanding and I believe he's had two perfect scores in the coaches award. That certainly would indicate he'd be leading as that award is judged by those who see more than just disposal stats but genuine influence.

Beyond that though I would struggle to work it.

Max Gawn, Jack Watts, Nate Jones, Bernie Vince, and Ben Ken would probably be my first names that would come to mind as top 5 contenders.

Viney from Gawn

My top 5 prediction at years end:

1- Viney

2- Gawn

3- Hogan

4- Jetta

5- Jones

Current top 5

First - Viney

Second - Gawn

Third -  Jetta

Fourth - Watts

Fifth -  Bugg

Prediction end of season

First -   Viney

Second - Hogan

Third -   Gawn

Fourth -  Jetta

Fifth -    Vince

Viney.

Gawn, Vince, Jones, Watts up there.

I like Kennedy, but he doesn't belong in the same group as the others you mentioned.

I feel that Kennedy could be the "what the hell" top 5 placer. He probably won't have the stamina to maintain it for the entire year but I think he's one that does stuff that coaches love.

I'm surprised many are placing Hogan in the top 5 at this stage, he may well get there by the end of the year but I think he's had a couple of outstanding games pocketed with solid-good games and a couple of mules. Really took until round 3 before we started seeing the real Jesse.

[Edit] Just realised the top 5s that included Hogan for years end.

Give it to Viney now so he can enjoy it for longer. Oliver will win the next 10.

Why stop at 10?

Just a nice round number and he doesn't strike me as selfish.

Unsurprisingly I think Viney would be leading pretty comfortably at the moment. Gawn would probably be runner up at this stage.

There's a large group of players who are in contention for the remainder of the top five. I'm backing Jetta as a smokey for a top five finish this year.

1 - viney (clear leader)

2 - max gawn (nèeds support to stay up)

3  - Jetta (best small backman in the game)

4 - Jack Watts

5 - garlett

I know the Melbourne B+F voting system rewards elite games as much as anything - so Viney and Gawn would be top 2. Hogan would be up there as well.

But it's also a reward for consistency of playing your role. So Bugg would be right up there. His work rate and defensive efforts from a wing would have him well placed.

Harmes would be another getting a fair bit of love for his good games as well as Kennedy.

Can you explain this system again DeeSpencer? Everyone gets votes out of ten for each game or some such?

I can't remember exactly but I thought it was each player gets a score out of 10 from 4 coaches, doing your role might only get 2 or 3, with a good game getting a pretty low score ie. 4 or 5 and a special game getting a 7,8 or 9. So a really excellent game can score 30+ (or 40) points, where just a standard good game might only get 15 or so. Clearly it's important to put together consistent games scoring 10-15 votes but a few big games can out weigh that.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
