IN: Michie Oliver ANB Stretch

OUT: Salem (concussion) Frost Harmes Hunt

Michie comes in for Salem and play his role. Was a clear BOG at Casey playing at half back all day with 35 disposals.

We missed Olivers clearence and grunt work. Viney and Jones needed a chop out and they had no support.

Alex Neal Bullen needs to be rewarded for his form the previous 4 weeks. Not only we know he can kick a goal up forward but he can go into the midfield and win a bit of the ball unlike Harmes. Another support act for Jones and Viney.

Stretch for bit of outside run and dash. We know he has a high endurance and high work rate maybe give him the job on Aaron hall and back him in.

Totally agree. Would be the clear leader of Casey's B&F at the moment. However he has never played in the backline in his life except the last two weeks. I think he has handled it very well and it has not diminished his ability to get the ball and drive it into the forward 50. I reckon he is a work in progress at the moment and will need a couple more weeks of training/experience in backline play to become fully accomplished. I don't get people on here saying he is only VFL level.  He has been in the best two at Casey every game this year yet people are calling for others who are "dominating" in the VFL. I reckon Viv gets no respect because he is a quiet bloke who just gets on with his job. Very good disposal by both hand and foot. Reads the game well and brings others into the game. He was good in the games he got last year and would have been in the best 5 or 6 in each game as I recall.

i would not say he played well by any strech of the imagination however i cant really see a reason for him to be dropped. Its the inconsistant players at the other end that are bothering me.

Bruce kicked 3 goals, Dunn ending up being moved forward he was struggling that much to run.

Had it bandaged yesterday but did not look discomforted. Handled his burger with aplomb.

He won't and shouldn't be dropped simply because he is our biggest body back there and we have nobody to replace him with. Garland and O-Mac are hardly in-form.

However, the guy has almost certainly got to be slapped in the face. Smarten the fark up, use your body, play tight and accountable one-on-one footy against your opponent and use the football when you have it. Weitering makes Dunn look ridiculous at present and he is just a kid. With barely a pre-season under his belt.

I've lost patience with these guys now. They're in their late 20's and they still have NFI about what it means to play consistent football.

No [censored] wonder Nathan Jones went bald so early in his career. He is the only one of the 'older' brigade who takes any sort of pride in his performance.

Bruce had 9 possessions, with some of those coming from his time spent in the ruck (i.e. not against Dunn).

Yes he kicked 3, but 2 of those came in the last quarter, when as you said, Dunn was up forward.

Did either of you go to the game?

I was there. Did you even see it? We didn't play man on man so match ups are irrelevant.

Dunn was found out, he was extremely slow and not competitive at all, then he was moved forward when the game was over.

You're happy with that? 11 touches and 3 tackles from a senior player when the ball was down his end most of the game.

Not good enough.

I dont think this is true. I dont rate him highly because he dominates in the VFL then comes to the afl and struggles, however having said that, i think we dont have the right person for that half back role. If he can spend a solid month dominating of the half back line then I would agree he deserves 1 more shot.

Dunn like McDonald and others as part of this rotating defence circus handled multiple opponents during the game so again, forget looking at Bruce's stats.

He was pretty unaccountable for the most part, incredibly sluggish, clumsy and persisted with bombing the ball down the line to no great effect.

When was the last time he ran during pre-season? Does he just refuse to do running at training?

One would think that if match-ups aren't important, and that the ball was down that end for most of the game, that Bruce would've had more than 6 possessions and 1 goal to 3/4 time.

That's BS STMJ.  Dunn was rarely away from Bruce, and his (Bruce's) stats back that up.

Dunn played how I wish the rest of the backline played.

Did I say match ups aren't important? Please show me where. I said match ups are irrelevant because we play a zone, if you'd actually been at or even seen the game you might get that.

Dunn had that much of a stinker that they told him to swap ends. You keep defending him though champ, 11 disposals and 3 tackles is not good enough.

You are right, he lined up on Bruce from the start. But he wasn't always on him.

For whatever reason, the way we press up as a defensive group and the way we zone means that on the counter, our guys quite often are caught out trying to cover multiple players. And I saw that with Dunn on a number of occasions.

I saw Dunn on Roo a number of times throughout the day too as well as 5 goal Membrey. (Still can't believe we allowed a player like Membrey kick 5).

If Dunn was truly playing so well, why was he moved forward toward the end of the game as Stu says?

Clearly we struggled defensively as a group but also individually which is evidenced by that move.

Dunn was horrible. Gave a stupid free kick away only to drop the bloke after he kicked it resulting into a downfield free kick inside their forward fifty. I thought he has been good the last couple of weeks but on Saturday he was simply horrible.

Im backing him to put in a good performance against GC this week.

Michie & ANB to come in. For Wagner & Salem

The club says they will reward consistent performers in the VFL.

Those 2 have been the regular top performers since the NAB challenge.

Oscar McDonald to come in for Dunn. Dunny has put on so much bulk he can't run out of his shadow. His arse is so big he can't jump off the ground to mark. All the forwards use him as a step ladder. Come on in Wiseblood he is a liability.

Harmes had a corkie in the right Quad 2 weeks ago. If this latest corkie is in the same area, he will need time off to make sure that muscle repairs properly.

The two disturbing losses Bombers and Saints they both killed us on the outside. We have been concentrating on getting in and under middies, but the outside run is not a strong point yet. Stretch will help in a year or two, but he is not quite AFL ready yet. All the recruiting and we don't have outside pace. Hunt is quick but he should be on the wing or half forward.

Our ball movement plan needs modification. Most times we move the ball from defence to forward line via handball. Usually about 6-8 times before we get it clear. St.kilda woke up to it and had someone ready to tackle at about the .4th Handball. They then ran off and scored goal after goal.Turnovers just kill us.

One thing for certain this week. There will be changes.

This is head in the sand stuff which has no place in the modern game!

I do not think so.

1  What versatility?  Being versatile means you can play 2 positions, not sure he can play well at either.

2  I would prefer him as a forward than defender, much better making mistakes in the forward line than the backline.

I really want to belive he will improve but i just cannot see it happening, in either position.

Billy. I was at the game it was the worst exhibition from Dunny I have seen in years and he has certainly had a few of them.

He isn't fit he can't run 4 metres back to try and stop a forward from getting the ball. Him putting on bulk when the game has changed to running players was a big mistake.

I was actually happy that Dunn was moved up forward.  We needed to attack to win that game, and needed more than Hogan to do it.  Pedo wasn't going to do it, Frost wasn't, Watts may have, so Roos had to try something "different".

Was it just coincidence that as soon as Dunn was moved forward, that Bruce kicked 2 goals and basically doubled his game possessions?

I was there too, Barney.  Given the way our backline functioned, Dunn played a more than reasonable game.

For what it's worth, I'm not a fan of Dunn and would duly criticise him if I felt he deserved it.

Genuine question. Were you at, or have you actually seen the game? You keep talking about stats and defending a player who was horrible on the day.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
