We're TWO games into a 22 round season - we've won one against a club most had us pegged to lose to (GWS) and lost one against a club most had us pegged to beat (Essendon).

 

Was going to comment on how over the top this post was until saw the sweet image of a flamethrower. Seems legit.

Ess had a big day, with the march to the G, all their past hero's present and hit the ground running.   We weren't.    We learn and get on with next week.

The papers will move on to this weeks losers and put the boot in to whoever does not play well.   

It's pretty easy to get 'Bossdog', their win/loss record over the last 8 or so years just about compares to our loss/win...

They have credits in the bank, we don't and we deserve to be smashed for last weeks performance...

I was there and went to about 10 games a season. We were bad but no where as bad as the past decade and we usually won the games we were expected to win especially at the G.

I've seen some shocking losses BD by some crap teams, the 200 point loss to Fitzroy was horrid but we had an awful team that still tried. I have seen alot bigger losses than the one against the bombers, but this was without a doubt one of the most gutless performances i have seen from a Melbourne team

How can this team, most of whom were not here "over the last 8 or so years" be held accountable for the lack of "credits" teams of that period generated? 

Hogan from his 22 games? Oliver from his 1? Brayshaw from his... 

The great frustration I felt with last week's result was that we'd [censored] away a golden opportunity.

How often in the past decade of ineptitude have we been presented with a "gimme game" like that?

(Un)fortunately I couldn't make it to the game. Essendon, to their credit, may've played well but the disparity in key stats suggests that our effort simply wasn't there. If we hadn't have been playing a top up side, the margin probably would've been 100+ points. 

I wasn't bullish about our prospects this year. I was hoping for a couple more wins and increased competitiveness. However, we should be at the stage where we can belt a side like Essendon. 

Bitterly disappointed.

As I said, it's more about the different situations for Melbourne and Essendon. They are unique and have no bearing on GWS and Geelong.

For a thrown together team to have more unity, pride and synergy than a team that's meant to be making finals this year (according to it's CEO) is an absolute disgrace, and so typical of Melbourne's culture that it just reinforces the "irrelevant" tag.

 

After the horror loss re essendon I have calmed down and realised its way too early to make any assumptions. Perhaps the dons will beat port. Perhaps we willl bounce back against North. Clearly something went wrong last week with poor, poor efforts by ten players. They were not in it mentally and did look tired.the next 2 games will shed more light on it all. We have some wonderful players on our list so we will have to just wait and see what they do. Good to see roos dropping garland. Kent and pederson may follow him. Lets not reward non effort like we used too. Keep the dream alive and dig deep to beat nm boys. Please.

Denham is shooting from the hip as he normally does but the general sentiment is fair. It was a disastrous performance and a massive step back from where the club should be and wants to be. 

That said, where he is most unfair is actually in relation to Essendon when he describes them as "the worst team in the AFL for a long time barring Gold Coast and GWS introduction years. The worst team in the AFL since Fitzroy.."

Firstly, the season is only two rounds in so the basis for this description in terms of performance, disregarding NAB Cup, is very minimal. Of the first two games, Essendon have won one.

Secondly, as one of the callers rightly points out, there were only 4 top ups that played on the weekend and they are more than handy players in the likes of Kelly and Stokes. It's all very well to say that Essendon have lost 12 players but only half of them were actually best 22. Denham dismissed this as giving excuses but he's wrong. It's a valid point.

Essendon may have been drastically underestimated going into the season. Or they may not win another game. We simply don't know yet. Certainly Melbourne should have won the game, but Essendon's performance shouldn't be overlooked. They did not look a terrible side by any means and it will be interesting to see how they go in the coming weeks. It may or may not be their best performance of the year but on that evidence, it won't be their only win.

It's funny when listening to KB and Denham, KB accuses Denham of hating Melbourne, but you can hear the frustration in Denham's voice when talking about Melbourne. He almost has the angst of a supporter. KB on the other hand seems far more dismissive. Of the two gentlemen, I know who is a lot less keen to see Melbourne succeed, and it ain't Denham.

We are insignificant, no opposition takes us seriously or as a threat. Before that loss, opposition supporters and the media were starting to take a little notice however it's all been lost.

Yep was great fronting up to work Monday facing work mates wearing Essendon scarfs... The worst part was they where simply saying "It's Only MELBOURNE" let's not get to excited. Right at this point in time we are " Insignificant". Only pride in the jumper & fighting WINS can change the perception.

May the the next 2-3 weeks be SIGNIFICANT performances and wins! Leaders need to recognise, stand up, deliver and collectively want to strive for the ultimate in football. It's not just about being competitive - it's about excelling in the competition.

 

In order to gain the trust of the members/supporters, win back some of those lost lapsed members and rebuild any confidence in the club whatsoever they have to win the next 3-4 games or at the very least put in a good showing this week and then win the next 3 following that against Pies, Tigers, Saints. There's no reason we can't other than above the shoulders and in the coaches box.

Maybe - but it's up to the team to prove them wrong. Our actions as a club and team will determine whether they're on the money or just spouting [censored] at an easy target.
