Overall, the comments by Roos seem pretty underwhelming, no player should come back "underdone".

And the fact that roos noted players who did come back underdone and praised that came back in good shape suggests he agrees.

Also instructive is the words and phrases he used when praising those who had done the necessary work - professional, be the best they can be, afl standard, elite habits etc etc

Sure, he was a natural freak of the game, but how many games did he actually play? It could be suggested that had he trained well and given up the durries, he would have easily doubled his games played count, and god only knows how many goals.

I think by mentioning Jako, you've actually hurt your argument.

I'm fairly sure Jakovich's career was cut short by a back injury which had nothing to do with having the odd gasper. Oh that he had played double the games and kicked double the goals. To see him destroy the Pies again virtually off his own boot. What wouldn't we give for that !!

They shouldn't. But they are also humans and they are also advised to take some form of a break over the holiday period for physical and mental wellbeing. The best players manage to unwind whilst still working on improving over the off season but it might not be for everyone.

I don't think anyone came back in terrible shape from what I've seen at training.

Harmes, Hogan and Garlett it's 3 out of 27 so far who might not have been exactly where the coaches wanted them to be. Harmes and Hogan are competitive young guys who will work very hard to get up to speed. Garlett is disappointing as an experienced player but then again we didn't exactly recruit him to lead the way at training.

Interesting comments on Viv:

“Viv probably played his best footy towards the end of last season. He gave himself a chance, but we needed numbers on the list for the draft, so it meant he dropped back to the rookie list. He’s training well and he needs to get fitter – he knows that – but he’s working hard at that area of the game. He has shown he can play AFL football, but it’s just a matter of him pushing hard now and doing everything he possibly can to get in the round one side.” – Paul Roos

On face value, Roosy has more faith in him than might be expected.

Well CP appears to have given him another spot to aim for in the opening round.

I found the round one side comment by Roos surprising.  He may have forgotten that Mitchie is a Rookie.  But that is unlike Roos especially as it could give false hope to Mitchie.

So I wonder who he plans to 'drop' from the seniors side or put on the LTIL.  Current potential candidates: Melksham, Trengove, Frost, Petracca

I believe that we're allowed to promote one rookie prior to round one regardless of injury.

I guess that refers to the 'nominated' rookie rule which is connected to the movement of players to the veterans list.

Not sure but I think this has been changed and now a rookie promotion is for a LTIL or after the bye.

Would be good to have some clarity if anyone knows.

Reading Roos observations and figuring his code, Oliver is looking pretty good for an early season (or even round one) start to his AFL career.

Injury free and a good NAB campaign will seal the deal for him.

well, i'll be buttered on both sides. i didn't realise you were into ping pong too, bitters

I'm gobsmacked that you began a post to BBO with "I'll be buttered on both sides". To most that would be an exclamation but to BBO it is an invitation.

(I am also treading on dangerous ground using the word gobsmacked)

Found these two reports interesting especially Terlich. Billy sounds like a mini Daniel Cross. Can't wait to see him go up a level next year.

BILLY STRETCH – No.15
Date of birth: 8/9/1996 (19 years old)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 71kg
AFL debut: 2015
AFL games: 11, AFL goals: 2
Position: Midfielder
Recruited: Henly Sharks (SA)/Glenelg (SA)
Drafted: 2014 NAB AFL Draft (No.42 – father/son)

“Billy is a professional. He knows how to train and he trains well. Like a few of the youngsters, he played some good football last year, but the second year can be harder – and sometimes they push themselves too hard. But things are going well with Billy. He’s training habits are good and his standards are really high.” – Paul Roos

DEAN TERLICH – No.46
Date of birth: 13/12/1989 (26 years old)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 87kg
AFL debut: 2013
AFL games: 35, AFL goals: 2
Position: Defender
Recruited: Osborne (NSW)/Murray Bushrangers (Vic)/Sydney Swans/Norwood (SA)
Drafted: 2008 NAB AFL Rookie Draft (No.68 – Sydney Swans); 2012 NAB AFL Draft (No.68)
Honours: Third Best and Fairest 2013

“Terls came back in really good shape, which was terrific. He knew he needed to and he knows he needs to keep working on his fitness. Unfortunately, he had a bit of an injury, which knocked him back a bit, but I can’t complain with him. His training has been of a high standard and it’s the best I’ve seen him train since I’ve been at the club.” –

I was thinking the same thing, but with better skills.

Roos comments re Terlich are also interesting, but I still doubt he'll play an AFL game again.

Dazzledavey Alan Jakovich was a freak,in his era other players trained much harder than what he did.No one commented on Oliver, looks over weight that does not make him lazy,I  will say it again you can train the house down but that's not necessarily going to make you a champion. Compare Scully an exceptional fit bod to Harmes who would you choose?

Scully

A question:

We are all thinking of who replaces Milkshake.

But who replaces the replacement in order for us to still have a full list ?

Some of you can relax, some of you will undoubtedly still panic...

"ELITE performance manager Dave Misson says the squad has returned from its Christmas/New Year break in good shape and has already started 2016 with strong intent."

well aren't you just a good little Melbourne supporter who swallows everything the club says unquestionably

Roos knew Melksham would miss the year

Petracca's 4 weeks is a genuine estimate

and that's just your efforts today

We have too many of Harmes type on our list. As much as I can't stand Scully id still take his outside run.

No you're not, you're just finding another excuse for a slanging match. I'd listen to what Dante said if I were you.

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.

  • CASEY: Northern Bullants

The Casey Demons travelled to a windy Cramer Street, Preston yesterday and blew the Northern Bullants off the ground for three quarters before shutting up shop in the final term, coasting to a much-needed 71-point victory after leading by almost 15 goals at one stage. It was a pleasing performance that revived the Demons’ prospects for the 2025 season but, at the same time, very little can be taken from the game because of the weak opposition. These days, the Bullants are little more than road kill. The once proud club, situated behind the Preston Market in a now culturally diverse area, is currently facing significant financial and on-field challenges, having failed to secure a win to date in 2025.

  • GAMEDAY: Sydney

It’s Game Day, and the Demons have a golden opportunity to build on last week’s stirring win by toppling Sydney at the MCG. A victory today would keep them firmly in the hunt for a finals spot and help them stay in touch with the pack chasing a place in the Top 8. Can the Dees make it two in a row and bring down the Swans?
