I like to look at both the best 22 followed by the rest just to really assess our depth and future

First 22

Jetta T Mac O Mac

Melksham Garland Salem

H N Jones Vince

Watts Dawes Kent

Garlett Hogan Frost

Gawn Viney Tyson

Brayshaw, Vandenburg, Petraca, Bugg

The rest

Terlich Dunn Grimes

Hunt Pederson White

Stretch ANB Harmes

Hullett Weiderman Trengove

JKH Max King Kennedy

Spencer Newton Oliver

M Jones Michie Mitch King Joel Smith

Looks like a walk-up Premiership line-up for Casey!

Happy with our draft yesterday, it doesn't change my Round 1 line-up however.

JETTA DUNN GARLAND

This looks pretty good, though I'd have Nibbler ahead of Harmes

Its a toss of the coin, but Harmes marking ability is a weapon I want on the park each week. Not many mids can mark like that.

I know we say this every year, but competition for spots has gone to another level for next season.

Locked in, throw away the key, best 22: Jones, Viney, Vince, Hogan, Brayshaw, McDonald, Tyson, Gawn, Garlett

Locked in, with the key under the mat, best 22: vandenBerg, Petracca, Salem, Dunn, Jetta

That's 14 spots, leaving 8, arguably, to be competed for.

With the important addition of KPF depth in the draft, there is reasonably strong competition on every line.

Exciting times.

I like the fact that there is a group of talented young players who probably won't all get a game but will provide great competition for the bottom spots.

Players such as Stretch, White, ANB, Harmes, JKH, Oliver, Kennedy, Bugg and hopefully Hunt.

B : Jetta, Dunn, Garland

HB: Melksham, T.Mac, Lumumba

C : Vince, Viney, Salem

HF: Brayshaw, Dawes, Vandenberg

FF: Petracca, Hogan, Garlett

Foll: Gawn, Jones, Tyson

IC : Watts, Pedersen, Bugg, Kennedy

Stiff to miss out: Frost, Stretch, ANB, Oliver (depends on his pre-season a bit) and Harmes. Pedo is only in because we need a second ruck but I guess Dawes could do some of it if needed. I would love to fit Trengove in....doubt he'll be cherry ripe in Round 1 but if his foot is right, he slots straight in and am hoping he could be an added bonus this year.

B: Jetta, Dunn, Melksham

HB: TMac, Frost, Lumumba

C: Tyson, Vince, Salem

HF: Brayshaw, Dawes, Kent

F: Garlett, Hogan, Watts

Foll: Gawn, Viney, Jones

IC: Garland, vandenBerg, Petracca, Oliver

That's my 22 too

I hope moving into the end of next season it becomes:

B: Jetta, T-Mac, Dunn
HB: Bugg, Frost, Melksham

C: Tyson, Petracca, Salem
HF: Brayshaw, VandenBerg, Kent
F: Garlett, Hogan, Weiderman
Foll: Gawn, Viney, Jones/Vince

IC: Oliver, Watts, Harmes, O-Mac

If everything goes as plan thats a solid team.

Depth

Backs: Lumumba, Garland, White, Grimes, Terlich

Forwards: Kennedy, Dawes, Hulett, Newton, JKH, Hunt

Mids: Stretch, Neal-Bullen, Michie, Trengove, M. Jones

Ruck: Max King, Spencer, Mitch King

Obviously between now and March 24th or thereabouts whenever the GWS game is we will cop some injuries and players will step up who we didn't expect or better than expect like Jetta & Tyson of 2014 & Vanders, Brayshaw & Gawn of 2015. My 22 is based on our players being able to remain relatively injury free and perform to their best, we also need to remember how we went in to tall against them in Round 2 this season and got run off our feet. so multiple players who can rotate through positions with stints through the middle are required

B: JETTA TMAC GARLAND

HB: MELKSHAM DUNN SALEM

C: LAMUMBA TYSON VINCE

HF: BRAYSHAW DAWES KENT

F: GARLETT HOGAN PETRACCA

Foll: GAWN, JONES N & VINEY

Int: VANDERS, PEDERSEN, FROST & STRETCH

Stretch gets the nod ahead of Watts who needs to prove himself over the pre season and I reckon Stretch will benefit from another pre season and can also rotate on the wing with Bernie & H,

Pedersen gets the nod to give big Maxy a chop out with Mummy

Vanders may need to give a big presence through the middle because after last year someone has to run with Shiel and I expect Viney to get that job

Frost gets the gig because they can go fairly tall with Patton, Mcarthy, Tomlinson and with us wanting to play Melksham and Salem off the HB we need some insurance.

Oliver looks good but as with the new club policy lets see how they go, I saw Juddy live in his 1 and only WAFL game round 1 2002, Trenners fully fit, Harmes & ANB continuing to improve can all lay claims to spots in the side.

The bigger boys taken can develop in the VFL as happens with the better AFL clubs

Dawes PSD?

Casey best 22 for me

JETTA FROST DUNN

SALEM TMAC MELKSHAM

VINCE JONES ANGUS

KENT HOGAN VB

GARLETT PEDO HARMES

GAWN VINEY TYSON

PETRACCA, OLIVER, ANB, KENNEDY

In fairness you acknowledged it, but possibly the biggest back flip I've seen with Oliver going from "scrubber" to playing 20 games in his first season.

Wanna wager ?

If fit, Oliver will be a staple from the get go, irrespective of my early reactionary views.

We've all got our favourites and scapegoats, but I think that this is the team that the coaches would see as best 22. Players like Lumumba, Dawes, Watts and Garland cop their fair share from supporters, but I'm sure the coaches have them pencilled in the best 22. Watts getting dropped in the final round may have changed how the coaches see him though.

I remember last year saying that Brayshaw would play round one and all and sundry said he'd spend at least a month at Casey.

Naturally, he played round one and went on to play 20 games.

Oliver and Petracca will play 20 games too, subject to the obvious.

I'll have a wager that he doesn't play 20 games, and being rested is not a caveat. That's part of being a 1st year player.

If Oliver is considered a forward/mid, he'll be competing with Garlett, Petracca, Newton and Harmes. If they want to ease him in off half back, he's competing with Melksham, Salem, Bugg and Lumumba. If they want to play him as a flanker, he's competing with VDB, Kent, Stretch, ANB, JKH and Kennedy. And Oliver won't get thrown into the starting midfield rotation of Jones, Viney, Tyson, Vince and Brayshaw.

Oliver will get some games throughout the year, but he's hardly a walk up start like Brayshaw this year.

Yeah, he's a walk up start. And the caveat was injury, not "resting".

He won't be competing with Melksham (back), Lumumba (whose only hope is back - he's crap in the midfield), Stretch (outside), Kennedy or JKH (smalls). I'd don't see much synergy with Kent either.

Oliver is a clearance king. Guess where we're crap ?

Of course he has his L plates on and won't be rushed, but players like (Wines, Martin, Brayshaw, Selwood, Bontempelli, and I could go on) are staples in their teams right from the beginning. Oliver sits well with that company and won't be any different.

No, I'm just saying your opinion of him changed. I'm not being critical, just observing your view of him (which you acknowledged you did change).

I don't think he does, which is where we disagree. Only time will tell.

Thanks. I'd forgotten.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
