Melbourne recruiting staff are up in the regional area this weekend meeting up with Clayton Oliver and family.

Well, that is indicative - where'd you hear that?

So he won the 'Brownlow' in TAC Cup after missing the Pre-Season with OP.

There is a lot to pull from that sentence...

Yes, he struggles with OP.

Yes, he played a great season on little build up before it.

Awesome news. We are all over this one.

Oliver and Parish to join our midfield team.

We had a planning day for staff and coaching for the under 16s bushies before we start up again and one of the coaching staff from the 18s who is also a great mate of mine from local footy gave me a nudge to say that the recruiting staff were up to meet with a couple of bushies and NSW boys and Oliver was one of them.

Well, he certainly has what looks to be 'a mans body' - which makes the transition to AFL somewhat easier.

I know that a number of people would be disappointed that we didn't get a tall to help Hogan long term but if the recruiting staff think this bloke will be the best player available - I would be very comfortable having two more talented mids brought into the team (assuming the rumours of our interest in Parish are true).

Highlights can make anyone look incredible

Morton, Maric, Toumpass, Blease, Strauss all say hi.

That said, we now have a professional recruitment team who no doubt occasionally delve just a little deeper than highlight reels.

This kid would be a very smart punt for rising star next year

So what you're saying is that you rate Clayton Oliver?

I'm guessing Parish is a lock at 3, if Curnow doesn't fall to 7 then we'll take Oliver

I'm more inclined to think the club's looking at possibilities if we take a key forward at 3. If I were to take any prompts from it, it would be that we're considering passing on Parish.

Given our acknowledgement in needing a partner for Hogan, I'm comfortable in assuming we will take a key forward with one of those two picks and that it is very much a priority for us.

As we've added so many mids through the last three drafts, I'd be highly surprised if we took two more mids at 3 and 7.

Viney, Tyson and Brayshaw are your locks. Salem and Petracca is unproven in the midfield at AFL level - they should prove themselves nest season hopefully. Vanders and ANB are in the process of proving themselves.

I am more than comfortable adding two more prospects to this list.

We simply have to come out of this malaise with a strong midfield.

Just on limited viewing this kids a real competitor, and he has a little class. Reportedly did well at Combine too, impressive. Goal kicking mid (20 goals).

He missed Vic Country due to OP early. How does he compare to that of Parish who represented at Vic Country?

You are judging players based on their name?

Toumpas and Parish are very poor comparisons.

I'd almost say

Sam Mitchell v Jordan Lewis

In terms of style of play and possible ceiling?

This kid is a bull, I would not complain if we took him at pick 3 and if we got him at 7 it would be awesome..

Im just starting to take the prospect of us picking him at 3 seriously. Does anyone know how he speed tested at the combine. Highlights can be difficult to go by but he did look a little slow I thought....especially when we so badly need pace.

if 7, so be it, but pleeeeease not at 3. as long as we smash our first selection, i'd feel ok about trusting the recruiters on taking this kid at 7. definitely does look slow to me though.. i thought at the start of the draft period we'd be after SPEED! need some dash and foot skills at 3 surely and i of course can also see an argument for a KPP being taken early.. if only we had THREE selections in the top 10, then i'd be keen on oliver fo' sho!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
