I disagree with this nonsense about young players being tired. The younger you are the more energy you have. As you get older you get more tired.

The idea of doing a pre-season is to build up your endurance to be able to run out games and not fatigue during the year, the more pre-seasons you have, the more prepared your body.

The young ones don't have that base that the older players do.

So, I expect some of the kids to slow down and be more inconsistent in the last 7 weeks.

Doesn't mean I would rest them, but that is what I expect to see.

This game last year was probably the worst of the season and we lost...happy to win the worst game this year.

I am still amazed how inert the team can be at times - Jones and Vince are looked at to do everything I would wager - when they don't, we struggle...

But the structures, again, they are very unMelbourne like, strictly adhered to, never broken out of and suffocating to the opposition.

Our game plan's improved, we're using the corridor a lot more although we are missing plenty of targets when we do, forcing us to be more conservative as the game goes on.

This year they missed several gettable goals. It could so easily have turned pear shaped if not for their inaccuracy. We were very lucky to win despite playing very badly in the second half.

We only let the guard down defensively in the final 10 minutes or so though, I felt. A lot better than usual. Up until then they were hopeless at finding targets

A big part of the reason Tyson gets pinged is that he is very good at getting his hands and arms out of the tackle. To the ump that represents an opportunity to dispose, which of course it does, but other players just allow the ball to be buried in the tackle....ball up. The inconsistencies to the holding the ball/incorrect disposal adjudication are a frank embarrassment to our game at the moment. It is an utter raffle, with not an ounce of credibility. Effectively a toss of the coin. How it gets fixed I don't know, but it is poisoning the game.

It is very easy to fix.

The holding the ball rules should be that if you take possession you must either kick it or hand pass it to dispose of the ball, none of this 'it was knocked out int he tackle' nonsense. If you have had prior opportunity (i.e a couple of steps/seconds) and you are tackled and it causes a stoppage then it is a free kick.

The only way there should be a ball up is if someone is tackled without any prior opportunity and it ends in a stoppage. how many times these days do you see the ball dropped, thrown, knocked out and nothing, the ump just waits until 10 players are all on top of the ball. Pay the first free and the game moves on, opens up, and the stoppages disappear.

There is an interview of Moloney on the Melbourne website. Looks like he still goes for the dees despite his stint at Brisbane.

I recall attending a junior footy clinic on the MCG in the early 80s.

After meeting the great man Robbie Flower we ran through a few drills with the players, as you do.

The mist of time has stolen the name from me but one of the players (who seemed an absolute giant) informed the enthralled group of children that there was no such thing as a chest mark. It was an "arm mark" as there is no way you can mark a football with your chest.

Funny how something so small sticks in your mind after 30 something years.
