Damaged goods...

Paul Roos has made a couple of references in his time as our coach to a group of players on our list he believes are struggling to overcome our dark past.

It seems he has isolated a few players who tend to look after their own game rather than the teams game and is signalling that they will be moved on come years end.

Based on this premise I am interested to know who you think he referring to specifically (rather than who you think should be traded/delisted)?

In my opinion, after last weekends game against Port, I'd have to suggest Watts, Grimes and Howe were the three he had in mind.

I think M. Jones and Bail are suffering from the same symptoms but will be delisted for different reasons.

The reason I think he is starting this conversation is that these three, on paper and as far as the lay supporter and the media are concerned, are all contentious players to part with.

A former number one pick, a former captain and a crowd favourite.

Thoughts?

If you are going to name names , put your head over the ball and give reasons. For example grimes is one of melbourne's most courageous.

Putting my head over the ball was naming names I would have thought? Anywho, I love Grimes but he's on the block for the simple fact that he reacts poorly to pressure, has poor disposal and hears footsteps even when they're not there. But primarily he might carry the hangover of being captain of a team that didn't know how to win.

Ha! The irony. Memes are the epitome of a cop-out!

I would happily take a first round pick for Howe. Could bring in a good young mid for that.

I would happily take a second round pick

I wouldn't be surprised if he sees Garland in that group too. Although, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be moved on. We may look for win-win trades though.

Picture worth a 10000 words, and a meme is worth even more.

How come you need words to explain that?

I think what he (Roosy) means when he says 'that',,, some are damaged from the past humiliating defeats, end on end, is imo the players have never developed in a relaxed environment whereby they felt relaxed (safe) enough to be able to have total trust in their place, so they can become 'intuitive players'...

i think intuitiveness or instinctiveness develops from a trust in self, & a quiet inner confidence in ones abilities to learn skills, & to produce those skills you've learn't.

When you believe in (have faith in your skills), its easier to develop into an intuitive player. one who doesn't have too waste precious milliseconds, thinking consciously about what to do. Instead of reacting intuitively, (using your first thought);... practicing this method can help to become intuitive.

just don't think too much whilst trying, don't try too hard. or the opposite can happen... paralysis by analysis.

this is where some are, overcautious, bereft of natural confidence. slow to decide, & lost flow in their games.... or some have it to a degree.

Dunn. 1 tackle. Doubt that torp is a Roos play, he just wanted it out of the defensive zone.

Dunn, Watts, Dawes and of course Howe have been the most disappointing. Add to that an injured Tyson, Viney, Kent and Jetta and we've probably done better than expected.

McDonald and Garland have been the big improvers and make up two of the top three Bluey placements.

Damaged goods??? Some of these GWS kids experienced 100 point loss after 100 point loss over a 3-4 year period. They certainly seem to have bounced back okay.

We can make all the excuses we like. At the end of the day, the overall list and some of the players on it are just not good enough at this stage.

Spot on TK

Not good enough and never will be.

Simple really

The difference is that being a newly founded club they had an excuse to hide behind. Our players did not - after all most posters here bristle if an excuse for anything is offered.

Sounds to me like Roos is (once again) deflecting blame away from himself for an abysmal performance by both the players and coaches.

I would have liked Roos to also come out and say that the coaches failed to react when the game turned ten minutes into the second quarter, even though we were sitting on a comfortable lead at the time. Instead they waited until we were two goals down before they changed anything.

If we'd made it to half time with a lead, I suspect the second half would have been far more competitive.

If Roos doesn't think that certain players are up to the task, then he needs to stop playing them and get games into other players. Howe is clearly one who has been terrible all season, but seems to be undroppable.

Thanks Christ Roos is in charge and not you. He knows what he is doing, you don't.

It's pretty clear that he is preparing supporters for some bigger names to be moved on at the end of the year, so that when the time comes, he's got this "baggage" as an excuse. It's not baggage at all, it's just not good enough, but there will be some names that will cause mild outrage within certain circles.

Then, there is also some players he is going to move on, but knows that they will have trade value, especially if they can regain form. I think Howe fits perfectly in to this category, and Watts too. Listen to what he (Roos) says about these players in the public forum - Watts has the highest footy IQ on our team, that we need him in the team and getting the ball to be a better team. He's played Howe forward and back to show versatility, and is persisting with him in the main team, all to get him back in form so that his trade value is higher.

He (Roos) did the same with Frawley, Clark and Sylvia. Talked about how significant losses these players would be, got absolute maximum compensation, all while he was happy for them to go. I know for a fact the Sylvia case was, which netted us Vince, was orchestrated by Roos' media ability.

N. Jones

Watts

Howe

Garland

Trengove

Viney

How come you need words to explain that?

just for you, dr

though this is more a composite but it has an interesting but nevertheless puerile twist of logic

Oh yeah but they didn't tank so they are not mentally scarred like us and Carlton........ :o

Roos needs to stop with this negative [censored] about continually blaming the past. Focus on the future.

no, applying the truth, helps to learn the lessons of what not to do.

glossing over, hides the cracks, & the bumps in the carpet, that keep tripping unsuspecting punters up... our club is full of trip hazards for young recruits.
