2015 apparent out of contract players merged with targets at seasons end

Featured Replies

Wow, I didn't know Coniglio was coming out of contract. I thought Western Sydney would be making him top priority.

Get get get get get that kid. Would not blink at using our first pick.

He would slot in immediately as our equal-best midfielder at least, and his all-round ability would bring our midfield very quickly to a more complete unit.

It would be enough for me to feel much more confident about our 2016 midfield, without needing to expect miracles of Brayshaw, Petracca, Stretch etc...

dream free agent acquisition:

patrick dangerfield

ideal free agency acquisitions:

matthew leuenberger

scott selwood

richard douglas

trade our first pick for one of:

shiel

treloar

sloane

coniglio

josh kelly

none of it will happen.

conca is a bit like toumpas - too slow, not skilled, insipid.

doesn't have the capacity to really run thru midfield, nor the defensively accountability to play half-back rebound role.

stuck in that awkward position of between being an outstanding junior talent and lacking the ability to convert that to the afl.

wouldn't go near him personally.

Unfortunately we have absolutely 0% chance of securing either Danger or Hannebury at seasons end.

Either would be a dream, but Danger is either off to the Cat's or staying in Adelaide (all the discussions/presentations with him took place over the off-season in early-mid January). Any talk of Danger going anywhere else than GFC/AFC is completely mis-guided and ill-informed. Geelong were extremely confident (95% - 99% sure) he'd make a decision to leave in Feb, however the odd's have gradually moved towards him staying due to the improvement in both the Crow's onfield performance and his relationship with senior members of the Crows.

The focus on improving the 'quality' and depth in our midfield is likely to be come from the interstate clubs (who are after greater opportunities at the MFC), with the goal of securing 1 free agent (who will assist with the development of our young mids).

Expect us to chase after a current CHF/CHB swingman with some experience at the end of the year.

Absolute rubbish.

You're either blatantly making this up, or gullible enough to believe your mates who are.

I'm neither making this information up, nor relying on any mates for information.

My source is first hand. I have a family member (via marriage) who had to leave our holiday home in the early hours of the 3rd Jan to meet up with Dangerfield and his management. (As both parties wanted the discussions kept out of the media). Suffice to say, my family connection with the matter doesn't get any closer!

(More than happy for you to doubt my information. I simply thought I'd share the details obtained at a family dinner on the 2nd Jan.)

Basically we need B+ and A grade midfielders and a B grade ruckman will do....

There is no need at all for us to be getting forwards and defenders...

We need to be like Brisbane this year getting Beams....

If Dangerfield was interested we could offer our picks 3,21 and Toumpas for Dangerfield and a third round pick.

Or

If Shiel was interested picks 3,21 and Watts for Shiel and a third round pick...

Or, we could just try to get him as a free agent. They can have Toumpas too though.

But he's really good at the coward's hit behind play and over the interchange boundary....

And then puts his hands in the air as if to say "what'd I do wrong?"

yeh, or that.

No. If we're giving up Toumpas, I want us to at least try and get something in return. We've taken an investment in him. You don't throw it away after 3 years without a fight. That's dumb business.

You may know something, but either you or someone else is adding a fair bit of mayo to your synopsis.

Your figure of "95-99%" is pure fantasy.

Even if you believe it to be true, just think about it for a second.

How many players would make a decision on their future in Feb with a new coach coming in & an entire season to play out?

The $ will always be there for Danger.

Now one individual may have made that claim or come to your conclusion independently, whether it be a club official or an agent, etc. based on their own perception (or overactive imagination) but it is fantasy. The organisation itself and the key players involved did not have such belief.

And that's from multiple people deep inside the club.

Hows about jack steele from GWS (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-05-28/raiding-the-lost-and-injured-giants)?

  • Selection 24 in the 2014 draft: Steele is blitzing the NEAFL but has been unable to break into the senior side so far for his AFL debut. A tall, strong midfielder who kicks goals, Steele played in the NAB Challenge and is probably the most advanced of the Giants' 2014 draft crop. Would be playing in most AFL teams by now and many clubs are ready to pounce if he continues to struggle for opportunities.
Contract status: Signed to the end of 2016

Player Bio (http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/player-profile/jack-steele):

  • A strong onballer who can also play forward, he has excellent poise and balance and is an effective lead-up player, winning All-Australian honours as NSW/ACT's MVP in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Finished equal seventh in the 3-km time trial in 10:11, recorded an equal-sixth best 15.1 in the beep test and scored 26/30 in the kicking test.
  • Strong and powerful midfielder/forward who can create something out of nothing. Shows excellent poise and balance when in possession and is a clever user by hand or foot. He was NSW/ACT’s MVP in the 2014 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 20.7 disposals at 79 per cent efficiency, 5.7 marks and two goals on his way to winning All-Australian honours.

I like the tall midfielders and the idea of speed, skill and height is appealing. Maybe second round pick for him (if we are lucky).

In a hearbeat. Won't happen though.

I know every other club will be thinking it, but I'd target GWS.

They would like the appeal of a player like Howe, whose spectacular hangers will grab attention even in NSW media.

Coupled with our first pick, we could get some serious value.

I'd ask for Coniglio and Plowman.

A dream result, but I think a realistic thing to ask for too.

GWS won't dream of offering up Shiel, at reload or Devon Smith.

I expect them to offer Palmer to anyone who'll listen though.

Notice Reece Conca is in the Toiges seconds.

What's the story with him and is he worth a years

Was injured through the pre-season and only started playing again in the ressies around 3 weeks ago....

We need mids mids mids mids and more mids. I anyone isn't convinced of that after what they have seen this year then they never will be...

Edited by jnrmac

With GWS having two quality kids in their academy, and with the new points system for academy selections they are going to need picks to trade to get these to academy kids...

I don't feel we need to cull another 9 players at the end of this year, just get in 3 quality mids (mature, established and potential)

So trading our 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks to GWS may have more traction than trading players to them might.

Gee, does your close family member who was keen for this information not to be out in the public domain know you're blathering about it on football forums?

Just as well few people take forum rumours seriously - only Jon Ralph will run with the story now.

In your scenario, I'd offer them 2 of Howe, Garland, Dawes, & our 2nd Rnd pick ; for both Shiel & Plowman ?

I can understand the allure of Howe for some highlights and Garland as a solid medium defender.

Not sure what they would do with Dawes however, he'd be about fifth in line for a forward spot there

If it happened in or near Geelong and Machsy never saw it then it never happened.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
