Does Wayne Carey deserve a pat for this? No coincidence that after the that meeting something has clicked for him.

I was thinking the same thing. He's far more value to the team playing the way he has in the past 2 weeks.

The response by Jesse has been amazing!

I don't think he was ever "not on track" PJ. Was just the frustration of wanting to be at a certain level all of the time. And then not letting his opponents see that frustration too much a la the match against the Bombers. That match was really the only "off" game so far and he had a few partners that day.

The boys are on track and their improvement is showing on the scoreboard. The fact that we are currently ranked 6th in team goal averages is in no small part to his efforts and the ethos, belief, hard work ethic and leadership traits that Roos is instilling into this team.

One week at a time though Demons!

Compared to round 1 where he was barely offering a lead he looks much better with a bit of time up the ground.

I think it's more that he's unsure how to play the stay at home role. We needed him to play the focal role up inside 50, so he stayed there, but found little space to lead in to.

Since he's been given licence to roam and play CHF, he's clearly not hamstrung by second guessing where he should be and he's a lot clearer on his role.

If the Weed is half as good and can bag his 2 or 3 goals, along side Watts, Kent, Garlett and a goal-kicking resting mid, we will have an extremely potent forwardline.

One word: exciting. Thank you, PJ, Roosy and Jason Taylor.

Not really.

Goodwin instigated the meeting - that's whose back I'd be patting.

Reported on ABC (Canberra) radio this morning that Freo have now turned their attention to securing Jesse, following Hooker's signing at Essendon.  It was most likely just a 'gap filler' on their sports report, and I doubt that anything much has changed because Jesse has probably never been off their radar.

Anyways, if both Melbourne and Freo keep playing like they are at present, I can't see Jesse seeking a trade to Freo, no matter what they might throw at him.

if Hogan is 10% as excited as Demonlanders are about how we are travelling why would you want to leave ?

I think a lot of these people are just making educated guesses that Jesse is a good player from Perth who plays for Melbourne so that means he'll leave.

It's rubbish, I think Jesse will stay he's a very old fashioned loyal guy who knows very well the massive investment and loyalty the MFC has shown him already and i think he's desperate to repay that, and that's why he gets so frustrated on the field at times, because he wants the team to win, just hates losing.

if for whatever reason he does leave we will ask for massive compensation and welcome Weiderman into the forward line who is a very impressive young talent.

I heard a rumour that Freo might have gone a bit cold on McCarthy. Seems he has a few issues.

Heard this too. Ross hasn't been impressed with the way he has gone about things with GWS.

Unfortunately, it means that as well as not getting Hooker, they will be more desperate for a big name and will go very hard at Jesse.

We have our work cut out for us. I still think if we can sign a few others and they come out with positive statements, about all being in it together, loving the club and our improved list, etc, that will help.

Of course wins will help as well.

Oh, the irony of the whole situation. Seems like nobody is going to come out a winner there.

I just think with player movement the way it is these days a player like Jesse will get very used to interest from other clubs very quickly.

having said that i like where we sit, we can match any financial offer pretty much, we're clearly on the improve and we play at the MFC every other week, which i'm sure a player like Jesse would love.

plus i think Freo are in for some fairly lean years so not sure they'll have to many blokes jumping on in a hurry.

I am starting to think it is only the go home factor that will be the consideration. We will be able to match offers and our future may be brighter than Freo's.

If we overcome that go home factor, I am hopeful Jesse will sign another contract with us.

A compromised position for him, might be to extend a couple of years past 2017 and see how we are travelling then.

I agree, and his manager has said publicly the go home factor isn't huge with Jesse, if we delisted him tomorrow he'd want to stay in Melbourne.

I am really confident we'll hang onto him long term

As much as the Bombers are excited by Hooker, imagine the reaction and impact on the club, if Jesse committed to us for another 5 years to 2022.

He is the one to build the forward line around and with Weideman and maybe Max King, plus our small forwards, we could have a great forward line for years to come.

The irony here is of course the Coach, the game plan and the personnel. Decisions on these have to be made ASAP,long-term and before other negotiations even start.

Especially if they want committed, smart players, who employ intelligent agents/managers.

Posted

Long term contracts are dangerous. Look at Ports list who are all on long term contracts. They are all now complacent as [censored].

I think the only issue will be dollars.

I have heard he's wanting very large coin, although I can't confirm the reliability of the source.

On another tack to do with Jessie, we should all be very thrilled at the way he is moving around the ground. The mental impact of this alone would make so many players

walk tall that I am afraid to think of what this would be like further down the track.

Misunderstanding here re my previous first post I was talking about Freo.

Re-signing Jesse would be massive, i would argue he's the most important re-signing of any player at any club in the AFL

5 weeks ago the equation looked like this:

Reasons to go -

 - $ (possibly, although MFC might be able to match)

- Returning to Perth

- Maybe going to a better team (at the moment)

Reasons to stay -

- Future of MFC vs Freo?

- Do you want to fly every second week (given you missed a season with a bad back).

- any loyalty to MFC, existing friendships etc?

Update Now: It appears we have the answer that the immediate/mid-term likelihood of success is with the MFC.  Freo can probably offer more $  than MFC now that another target is off their list, but like Hooker re-signing with Essendon, will it be enough? So seems like it comes down to whether Jesse wants to go back to Perth to live (which probably will be detrimental to his footy career, given the amount of time he will spend in a plane vs playing for MFC). Even If he does go, it would seem that Freo will be able to offer much better draft picks than we thought likely a month ago!

No doubt he'll be paid handsomely.

But if he's seeking very large coin ie. excessive , he'd want to eradicate some of his clanger field kicking. He turned it over just as much as TMac did, Sunday night.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
