We do need to own Melbourne City, how much would it cost the club to set up a coffee van in fed squad and give out free coffees and waters with the logo on it every Home game at the MCG?

We need something like that to make it our city!!

The best commodity we have right now to gain traction in Melbourne City is Jesse Hogan and, of course, winning.

As Lance Franklin showed, kids identify with a marquee player. Franklin was huge in elevating Hawthorn's brand - along with the 2008 flag.

Off and on-field, Hogan is the best thing going for this club in eons.

Yes, for all the money spent on rebranding, re-doing the song, giving out free coffee, and all that stuff - the best value for money will be whatever Jesse Hogan wants.

So Jesse has put on weight, he looks stronger, more confident, ready to improve on 2015.

The most important re-signing there is...

A rule change suggestion that had been thrown around a while ago was the possibility of introducing 1 franchise player per team and being able to pay that player outside the normal salary cap, that'd be handy right now.

it would also mount a case for hawks - or any destination/powerhouse club - to poach him on massive dollars too.

That would be the worst thing that could happen to the AFL.

Agree with you, would introduce a"him and us"division: sort of modern version of gentlemen (gentleman) and players.

And it coincides with a year that three overpaid footballers collectively worth about 1.2 million coming out of contract.

We we simply can not [censored] this up. That fact we were proactive last year was a good sign but as many have alluded to already we must win more games. 10 isn't a pass this year as we should have beaten Saints/Bombers/Blues last year. To win more games we must eliminate all passengers as the players are flat out of excuses.

In that case Gil is highly likely to run with it ?

Why is this in a Hogan thread ?

I think DA was drawing parallels regards their journey into AFL football and similarities with their careers.

Cripps extends.

we really need McCarthy to get to the Dockers on a big contract at the end of this year.

I back the club to successfully counter any other Vic clubs offer to Jesse. The WA factor is our achilles. If Dockers get McCarthy that threat reduces somewhat, although not entirely.

Fremantle will be able to get McCarthy at a very low price due to his current issues. No other club would want to touch him, bar maybe the Eagles. I think signing him will reduce the urgency for them to sign another forward, but I don't think it would deter them from making a play for Hogan. If they think they're a chance to get him, they'll do everything they can to do so.

That being said, we've still got Hogan for this year and next year. That means that even if we have a season that's below expectations in 2016, we'll still have a chance to right the ship in 2017 before he makes his final decision. He's said that he loves Melbourne, and it's obvious that he has great relationships with a lot of his teammates. He plays with passion and looks like he's committed to the cause.

While it would be an awesome boost to the club to sign him before round one 2016, I'm not overly concerned if he wants to wait until mid-season or even after the season to negotiate his contract. I'd feel uneasy if he went into 2017 unsigned, but even then, that's not the end of the world.

Pretty simple

  1. the club must show an upward trajectory - important for most players. We have been a basket case for so long - it is little wonder players wanted to move on. In my mind we are now stable and poised to continue to improve. We must win more games.
  2. meet financial demands - that is in our own hands and I don't believe that will be a problem
  3. hope the go home factor is not a factor - all noises being made is that he is happy here - I take that at face value.

Presumably from his RS interviews, the two are also very good mates.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
