I don't think there is any guarantee that those players mentioned will be able to play to the level their senior players are now. When those players come into the side they are given a very small role and have star players like Fyfe, Mundy, Barlow all to shield them. Once some of those are gone they are then expected to step up, which not all of them will be capable of doing.

A couple of years ago I remember reading how the cats had drafted well with guys like Smedts, Horlin-Smith etc. Fast forward to now and those players really don't look that great once they are expected to do more.

I think it is underestimated just how important the top 5-6 players of a side are.

Spot on 'Dom', you don't easily replace champions...

my friend has told me a few times that Jesse has said he probably wouldn't go back to Perth at all if not for his family, that there is so much more to do in Melbourne, and he loves being in the home of footy, apparently a lot of his mates are over here now anyways, besides Dom sheed who is an Eagles boy, jaeger up at the Suns and David swallow is up there too

Perth is a very nice place to visit, but after six months the walls start to close in. And they don't have the G.

I grew up in Perth and then went to live in Canada for a year. Came back and it was a lot smaller than I remembered! I now live in Melbourne and I never want to move back to Perth, Melbourne is such a great city to live! And the bonus is I now get to go watch the Demons play with other supporters with me rather than 40,000 eagles or Dockers fans (it's terrible if you've never experienced it).

Greg Denham also takes the opportunity to lay the boots into Chris Connolly in that article - might be some bad blood between them?

Might have something to do with the venom he wrote about us during Connolly's time here

I don't know why and have no inside knowledge, but I just have this feeling that Jesse will stick with us.

He just seems to love what he does so much.

Just double checking that article and pinching myself that Jesses agent and family have said he doesn't wanna leave Melbourne

2017 is a long way away but lets pop some champagne anyway

Yeah knocking it down early is always a good thing, sometimes you hear families of players say stuff like "we just want what's best for him but it would be nice to have him home" sort of throwing out there the idea of a return. But that really just sounds like Jesse's enjoying his time here and his family are just as happy for him.

Yeah knocking it down early is always a good thing,

understatement of the century :)

Every time we watch Jesse play it is no doubt in the back of our minds that hes a WA boy and that Freo and WC will be trying to lure him home already.. not to mention the 15 other clubs tryna have a crack

So this is a huge relief to say the least.. although not confirmation of anything iis the best possible news at this early stage of his contract and career

Posted

Don't worry about Freo declining after Pav and Sandi, they are a very professional club and I have seen there WAFL aligned side a few times this season and they have soem good kids coming through and also Nat Fyfe is only just beining his climb as an out and out Superstar. They will always be an attractive proposition to any WA boy wishing to return.

As far as I am aware Jesse's parents have moved from Perth to the South West.

All we need to worry about is to keep improving, strengthen the bond with the new brigade of Hogan, Brayshaw, Salem, Petracca, Macca, Kemp and others coming through and balance it out with an attractive deal which will keep Hoges with us.

One of teh old club stalwarts like Todd Viney could also help out by setting Hoges up with one of their daughters to strengthen his ties to Victoria

Posted

I wouldn't trade Hogan for anyone, he is the guy we've been missing since Neitz left.

Neitz is a plodder compared to hogan

Another thing to remember is the investment we have made in Jesse is something he's really understanding and respecful of, we gave up picks 3 and 13 for him, flew him back to perth every time he needed to go home, Roosy has visited his family to explain the direction of the club and how much we love having Jesse, we have signed him on an extension well before his contract expired for him to make, and i'm not certain of the figures exactly but next year he's on above 500k per year for a kid who at that stage hadn't played a game.

we have put total faith in this kid and Jesse wants to repay that.

Plain, weedy nobody like Jesse would have no hope of finding a partner himself, especially in a small town like Melbourne.

Melbourne the club or Melbourne the city?

Drink quick, as it will be flat by 2017

Careful Jesse, I named my second Earl after Spalding you know that Carlton player. gasp!

I'll keep the third kid unnamed to hedge my bets then, ship the first two out to boarding school to save face.

Tried that, they still come home.

Edit: Essendon supporter employee named 2 sons, one Paddy the other Ryder. True. I still get a laugh from that.

What a nightmare.

Have you tried giving them unsolicited advice on their sex lives and talking ad nauseam about the 'good old days'?

Should keep them away for a while.

It's pretty simple - it is much easier to keep players when your club constantly wins and plays finals or at least the players can see a positive direction the club is taking.

As much as I love my club, mid Neeld era I would have had some understanding for any player wanting to jump ship.

I tried wearing my jeans like they do, you know exposing my butt crack, that worked.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
