FAREWELL JEREMY HOWE

Though I do think this description of JH as a one-trick pony mindlessly narrow. When was the time he even took a speccie?

Ok, Half Trick Pony!!

Damn that Hogan. Can only kick goals and grab a few cheapies up the ground the half-trick-pony.

So.....Everyone wants to trade JH for a skinny 18 years old, who MIGHT become a player in a few years

I don't have the stats for this year but last year when playing mostly in the back line he was

5th in general kicks

1st in short kicks

2nd in marks taken

1st in contested marks

2nd in rebound 50's

He is a 25 year old 100 game player

So far away from being a 1 trick pony it's not funny.....He has been maligned since he put contract talks on hold as DL's can't seem to get their heads around a player making a decision of his own future.

He is a good player that I would hate to lose.

Personally, I'm a bit ambivalent about Howie, but I have every confidence that under the present administration, he will not be paid more than his 'realistic value' to the Melbourne footy Club. I would not have had this level of confidence a few years ago.

I certainly rate him as a lot more than a one trick pony.

Robbo was IMO a (very loyal one club great clubman) one trick pony: Jeremy can play forward or back, and if he does go to ground after an unsuccessful speccie gets up and chases. Certainly more than one trick.

He offers experience and maturity in the back line - IMO ahead of H and Grimes at this time in his overall value to the team.

It would be disappointing though not by any means fatal if he were to leave.

He can be more than a one trick pony, but the issue is that we haven't really seen it this year. For the most part he his impact has been minimal and at times his effort has looked non-existent.

We either trade him or keep him and pay him what he deserves after his performance this season, IMO.

Jack Watts has since his 100th played his best footy and become a key member of the side. 100th game is about the time players come into their prime. Jeremy is in the same boat and his best is in front of him.

It is a shame that he apparently is offended/insulted about his treatment during last years trade period. Roos made it clear last year that everyone was on the trade table (if all parties agreed) and it isn't the club's fault that GWS made their offer with a few hours to go. I suspect JH would be more offended if the club didn't tell him of the GWS offer at all.

Hope Jeremy is mature enough to make a decision for the right reasons. He is coming into his prime and we need 100 game players. For these reasons I hope he stays.

Want to keep him.

He is easily in our top four or five defenders.

That's great cos we only have 6 in a game...:)

550k would be the most I'd be willing to pay to keep him, some might say that is even generous, but as mentioned above - he does bring a marketing component to the table. Outside of that, I'd be prepared to trade Howe, obviously for the right trade.

This site makes me laugh. You ppl wouldn't have a clue how the club is managing a list nor what players are getting paid andthe relativities with others. Then there are the bonuses such as B&F finsihes, brownlow votes, games played etc etc. There is a budgeted increase in 2016 when the new TV rights deal is set etc etc,

But hey if you wouldn't pay him more than $550k then I guess he'll walk....

$550 is more than 5% of our cap.

That would mean he would be in our top 5-8 paid players.

Seriously. Do you think he is worth that?

Dawes gets more I would guess....Is he more value to the team this year?

Nobody knows how much any player on our list gets....It's all guess work by media and supporters when money is mentioned.

We have to pay the cap to some one....

Despite what we think, Howe is worth what the market is willing to pay.

That goes for all ooc players and free agents etc.

Surely nobody thinks he is one of our most important 5-8 players

And if the market thinks he is worth more than we do, then that is the best time to cash in on him.

If we could get a top 10 pick or a player who is considered to be on the same market level as him (600k or whatever he is being offered) then it's a good deal for us.

Having said that I'd also be happy to keep him.

that's $45,833 a month before tax! These guys are seriously overpaid!

well i'd prefer to keep him

so it just boils down to how much we offer/can afford

versus what someone else offers him and what pick/trade they offer us

i'd have to say 500k is definitely tops and probably overs

The big question - who do we have to replace him?

A utility who can mark and goal and play a role in defence. people want to move him on because he is inconsistent . He has been valuable in games this year ,

what replace him with a midfielder?

Surely nobody thinks he is one of our most important 5-8 players

Agree with this. Ahead of him (on importance) I'd have:

Vince

Jones

Gawn

Hogan

Tyson

Cross

Viney

Watts

Brayshaw

Salem

Dunn

McDonald

Petracca

Garlett

Jetta

Arguments can be made that in 2-3 years the likes of Kent, Neal-Bullen, Frost, Stretch will also be more important/influential players. Wouldn't want to pay more than $400k for Howe. Marketing tool? Yes. Piece to build a team around? No.

There is not a straight line graph to determine monetary value.

So 5% cap does not necessarily equate to top 5-8 paid players. There would be a lot at the lowest tier.

That might be so, but any long-term deal needs to account for the rise in salaries from players that will currently be at that "lowest tier". You can imagine the likes of Hogan, Brayshaw, Petracca, Salem, Tyson, Viney, Gawn etc will all be in line for a big pay rise come their next contract. You'd hate for a player like Howe to cost you one of those blokes.

So whilst losing him may equate to a short-term loss, avoiding crippling our salary cap with a $600k~ contract for an inconsistent flanker will be more beneficial to the club in the long-term.

Yes agreed. So let's do a break down of a typical list. Salary estimates based on 2015 AFLPA CBA. Google it for details.

Cap $9.9 million

4 rookies: total $220K

4 1st year draftees: total $260K

4 2nd year draftees: total $280K

4 on minimum base payments: total $324K

Total for 16 players: $1.1 million

Match payments listed as $3500 per game min for min salary players. 2nd year draftees can earn up to $5100 per game. For others it is negotiable. Let's assume $5000 average, which is probably under estimating.

Yearly match payments: $2.5 million

Total so far: $3.6 million

Near and fairest bonuses? Let's assume 300K for ease.

So the remaining 24 players have $6 million between them.

The average salary of the remaining player is then $250K.

Let's assume the top 5 get $700K.

Then the average remaining salary is $131K.

Even if we change it to 4 rookies, 8 draftees and 10 minimum salary instead. Inc match payments and b&f: $4.4 million for 22 players leaving $300k for each of the remaining 18.

Or $155K each of the top 5 get $700K each.

So tell me again why Howe should earn $550,000 or more?

PS that had been done quickly in my head.

Mistakes in math? Probably. Please point then out and I'll correct them.

I noticed in PR's presser this morning he mentioned they have started having conversations with Jeremy to keep him at the club.

Didn't say how advanced they were or any terms or conditions, but conversations have started
