This is about the worthiest comment I've read about this. I really get fed up with armchair moralists who have never had a go at anything in their lives but sure know how to kick the bum of somebody who may have fallen over. Pick the man up, don't berate him. There but for the grace of god go I.

Totally agree, but you must remember we have infallible posters on here as well, never made a mistake in their life, especially when they were in their teens and twenties, laughable....me I know what the inside of a cell looks like, still hasn't stopped me leading a 'normal' life, just a bit of a drunken idiot when younger

I can't understand those who want to sweep this under the carpet. By not attending court he is trivialising driving under the influence without a licence - behaviour that can endanger life. He needs to be held to account by both the law and the club.

he'll get his fair whack from the law no doubt

posters were only discussing what the club might do

his offence as far as mfc goes is only failure to disclose and attend court, not the driving charges which occurred before his mfc time

I can't help but wonder what comments we would be seeing from posters here if there was a match against Carlton next week and Garlett had not left them for us.

It would be a deplorable act if Carlton had have played him, but he's with us now.. So it's all good, move on and good luck son!

My attitude is that we knew we were getting a potentially good player who has had lots of personal problems when we took him.

We hoped we could keep him on the straight and narrow for 2015 and beyond.

We have yet to see if the first part is true in the real heat of action.

The second part now looks to be in danger of unravelling.

For me he is on notice and the last chance is now in play.

Lets see what happens from here.

This is just a bit of his past catching up with him, he still has a clean slate with us IMO.

Not in mine.

He told no one about this case and did not front in court that all happened since joining the MFC

True, but as I said earlier, some of the comments/posts I think say more about the poster than Jeff Garlett

This is being overdramatic OD, he stuffed up, for one he will have to wear the wrath of not only the Club, but also Nev Jetta

I am pretty comfortable being holier than thou in certain instances. I have never drunk-driven with a suspended license then skipped my court appearance. So I am indeed holier than he in that one respect.

Does that mean you have never driven with alcohol in your system, or you just haven't been caught doing it, your answer will determine the intensity of the glow of the halo

I'm not sure how anyone can take this stance.

I agree he isn't the first to be caught drink driving and he won't be the last.

It is not the one mistake in isolation. He was booked for drink driving AND he didn't inform the club AND he didn't front court.

I can even half understand if three stupid acts are done in conjunction with each other - ie being drunk, being chased by police and doing a runner - blind panic sets in and you exacerbate your first silly act.. But there is a sizable time gap between the incident AND the chance to inform the MFC AND fronting court.

( and comparing not fronting for a court appearance to forgetting to renew your car rego? Really ???)

It is not a hanging offense but trivializing it ? not me....

Nobody is trivialising it, Nusbaum, we're just asking for some compassion and would like to formally take out a suppression order against any more sanctimonious posts about Jeff Garlett, especially since we have heard absolutely nothing about his side of the story.

No problem with compassion - but comparing missing a court date and driving on suspended licence and comparing it to forgetting to pay your rego - is exactly trivialising the issue.

To me it is about the appropriateness of the consequences for his actions. I am certainly not advocating firing him - by the same token I don't accept that he has clean slate with us as his first offense occurred under Carlton's watch. He compounded his first mistake by making two further mistakes.

As to not hearing Jeff's side of the story - the clubs statement " However, his failure to inform the Club of this incident and him being unaware of his scheduled court appearance is extremely disappointing. " carries no weight with you ?

You were put in a cell for a being a drunken idiot when you were younger?

Had you been a valuable footballer, do you think you should have received different treatment ?

The world needs more well considered and moderate views like this one.

I have been accused in the general forum of being a "rabid lefty" and my views are there for all to see - I would like to see a more compassionate forgiving society and for me it is all about appropriate consequences for one's actions taking into account special or extraordinary circumstances. Being a footballer is not special or extraordinary circumstances and I won't suggest turning a blind eye purely because we need a small crumbing forward.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
