1st Game Banner 2015 "For You"

picket fence

Recommended Posts

Just been looking at some nostalgic games in those "Heady" finals of 87 One of the last run through banners depicted a caricature of Rob Flower and the words inscripted "For You"

I would love the footy department and the cheer squad to recreate this banner as a worthy tribute the indelible legacy which Robert Flower left on not only all of us but the Melbourne Football Club!

Hard to imagine the players not being moved to a super effort with some "Added" Incentive!

Thoughts?

I'm sick of needing someone's passing/milestone game/some other bloody reason for the players to have a crack, and what happens if we lose, then it's the whole we let him down thing. I'd go with "we will always remember you" rather than "for you".

I think that the days of "Doing it for...." are long gone......The sentiment lasts about 2 mins into the first quarter

Look at the Tom Hafey game against Richmond this year....Didn't do them to much good.

As much as I loved Rob, I don't think he means so much to the current players.....He was a legend to the footy club and the supporters.

I just think it is time to move on.

The passing of Jim had no effect on the outcome against Brisbane a few years ago and furthermore the round 4 tribute game against the Bulldogs.

We beat the Toiges after Hafey had passed.

Robbie and Jim died way too early and I think the club has honoured their contributions.

I like the sentiment but it offers little merit in my opinion.

Whilst I think the sentiment is nice I would prefer to win games because we are a good team whose demons (boom!) are behind us. None of this added incentive stuff.

to be winners you have to stand for something, to be honored to fight for something more than just points. to fight for your idol, the clubs understated Hero is standing.

points are nothing.

its the people the connections & the emotions that drive us all. the fight for robbie is such a thing to stand tall & strong for in this game, & the things he held so dear & his values are the things to fight all seasons for.

for the love of man.

87...the beginning of a mighty run of wins and fist pumping excitement..I still have the footballs that were booted into the crowd as souvenirs during the 87 finals...

Sir Robbie Flower played a huge part of it all.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this banner, & while we must create new legacies at MFC..... we must ALWAYS show our respect for the rest of our existence in 2015 & beyond.

The banner would be a small token of appreciation.

Thats why we are "the"most traditional club. We respect & don't forget what our troopers have done for us over the journey since 1858.

... its impossible to not look for the future, because if you look the other way it will smack you in the back of the head.

our faults haven't been not looking to the future, back not recognising our OWN faults, & rectifying them, to become a more attractive entity that attracts the footy public to climb on-board.

We Have to become a Club, once again... an open welcoming club where people can fall in love with IT. one that People recognise & can Identify with... we can still have a personality like 'Mohammed Ali', but we still have to have meaning & purpose, & good humour.

we are seen as pompous & losers. the club wasn't like this pre 70's.

Hi Deeluded just wondering with 17 Thousand odd posts, obviously an old time Dee did you ever meet Rob??

Love your post and sentiment!

I suppose the extra incentive angle probably is unrealistic!

But to pay homage to Rob Flower, for all he stood for and was exemplified as being probably pound for pound arguably the best player this club has ever seen!

I just reckon his loyalty and legacy almost demand this type of response for the first game in 2015!

IMO he is right in the thick of this games, elite of the elite

I haven't seen a better player in my time; I've seen him lower his colours to others, like Blight, but pound for pound he was as great as there has been

he is what we all want this game to be all about.... his generous spirit, loyalty & courage, honesty, bottled up all into a skinny footballers body = absolutechampion...

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
