WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON

Featured Replies

Terlich was not the only player re signed this year. Not really sure how you can justify singling him out as the one player that cost the use of pick 40

I think the point is that he's the one most would happily let go so that we could use pick 40, and that it was an unnecessary move at the time, considering there'd be no other teams fighting for his services, and if they were, we'd probably happily let him go.

My thinking is that had we'd known we would bring in Lumumba, we'd not have re-signed Terlich.

The angst is over signing him early, I think.

Can't argue with it too much, but under the heading of "biggest list management mistakes at MFC" this is a minuscule bullet point near the bottom.

We have done far worse with our list management then this Machsy. Yet we are still able to bring in players from other clubs.

The club needs to make a decision on his future very soon. His second half of the year at Casey was quite poor. Thats before injury too.

He is already behind Jones×2 Tyson Viney Cross Vince Toumpas Salem Michie Riley Mckenzie and possibly Newton and pick 2 (Brayshaw)

I would even go further and say even Harmes showed alot more this year then Evans.

This is the reality.. Seriously what is the point in keeping him on the list.

FMD.

Reality and your skewed perception of it are poles apart.

Making a practice of paying out contracts and then re-rookie-ing players is bad bad business.

Surely even you can see that.

I'm more upset with the fact we went so early on him, as if we were keeping the throngs of other clubs at bay. It's not like there would have been any other interest in him, so why did we lock ourselves in so early? If we end up forced to leave ND40 behind because the list is full and we can't afford to pay out contracted players, that would constitute the exact reason why we shouldn't have gone so early on a line-ball, fringe-22 player at best.

Can't argee it is bad business. I don't care what's happend in the past. The players owe the club. To club owes them nothing.

There were a few players like that 'titan', not just Terlich. It was almost like we were signing players to give Matt a good news story in light of all the Frawley speculation.

This attitude is completely unprofessional, would have players like Newton actively avoiding our club (not to mention managers), and thankfully would never happen under the current administration.

Evans has had what 5 or 6 injury riddled years Nup I agree with Dazzle man pay him out and move on! Either him or Mc Kenzie!

No it is reality. Your just one of a few delusional supporters that choose to ignore it.

Fact is we need to make our list better. Evans is not part of the future. Pretty simple really

Bad bad business? FMD every club are doing it now days. AFL is business now and pretty rutherless.

Far out I dont think delisting a player who struggled at VFL level this year with a year to run on his contract is going to send a bad messege to managers and players around the AFL.

Yep Agree!

It makes no sense to put JT on the rookie list, we risk potentially loosing him for what purpose. If he goes on the LTI list then we can promote one of our rookies, if he goes on the rookie list then we have to nominate who will replace him, so instead of having possibly 4 rookies to choose from by the start of the year will will have chosen someone in a months time. Makes no sense to me..

You see no difference to picking a player at ND 40 and Rookie pick 2.

You see no difference to picking a player at ND 40 and Rookie pick 2.

It looks as though, according to an article on the AFL website, that there will only be around 65 live selections in the ND.

This would make RD2 approx. the 67th live selection for 'new' players.

With regard to ND40, I don't think we should pass on that but the argument to pass on ND53 in lieu of the more flexible RD2 is a strong one.

Trengove may be more use on the PL injured and allowing any one of the rookies to play Rd 1 than he would be on the RL.

Past list management and admin mishaps are the reason we're in this conundrum.

We have an opportunity to make a player upgrade and Id be paying either McKenzie or Evans out. It makes our past list management and admin look bad. But not our current one.

The fact that we've just delisted three former top 20 draft picks proves how badly we've managed, recruited and developed in the past.

Any opportunity to upgrade our list should be jumped at. Especially if it's for McKenzie or Evans. Two players who shouldn't be on our list.

MELBOURNE has emerged as the front-runner to secure the services of delisted Port Adelaide midfielder Ben Newton.
Newton is regarded as a talented player who has been starved of opportunities to consolidate a place in a star-studded line-up at Port Adelaide.

Yeah.. this was posted already in this thread on page 2.

Thanks for the update. And in recent news MFC has just signed Mitch Clark from Brisbane in a 4 year deal. What a coup for the club.

Who the hell would take a punt on Trengove knowing he'll miss at least the entire 2015 season? Fanciful.

Your the one that's being fanciful. Richmond wanted him at pick 12 before he got injured, you don't think they would use a late pick on him?

If they recruit Newton Evans, McKenzie or Fitzpatrick will have to be delisted then rookied if they are going to use pick 40 it won't Trengove or they will use pick 40 for Jetta. Essendon are only going to pick 20 in the draft so they clearly don't think there is a lot of depth in the draft Melbourne might be thinking the same.

Who are the 20 players you would have ahead of McCartin?

You have a go at his speed but then rave on about Lever who is slower, well done Mr Fanciful.

Yeah.. this was posted already in this thread on page 2.

HH first with the breaking news again

MFC should offer the kid a 2 year contract. Bypass our pick 53, and select him in PSD # 2. Solid, left footer, 22yo, ready to go. He was very unlucky not to make Port's finals team. Emergency on 5-6 times in last half of 2014.

Now he is a delisted free agent, we need to grab Ben Newton. He has the ability. We have the spot, the need & the cash.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
