My reading of the situation is there's only two reasons we'd come out saying we'll give up 2 and 3 for Danger. Either:

a. we've got him, and now Adelaide are playing out their end of the script and pouring the blame and pressure on Danger, despite being perfectly happy to take picks 2 and 3 over FA compo

or b. we're making as public a statement as we can make in trade week to entice any other clubs desperate for top picks to come to us. We're prepared to give up these picks, so what can you offer us?

Even with posters posting their 'inside' info - those who say we've been in close discussions with Adelaide and Dangerfield's manager and that a deal is brewing, and those that say Dangerfield has flat out rejected the idea of coming to the MFC could all be right, even if the information is conflicting. Even with the best and most current info - people can lie, and people can change their minds. I wouldn't ever categorically decide anything until the deal (or non-deal) is done.

The only reason I have not completely dismissed the possibility is, as proven just prior to last season, A PJ led administration does not take a simple no for an answer. Roos said that PJ talked to him on numerous occasions and kept suggesting various scenarios and alternatives. I think PJ's modus operandi is that no is not no until it is 100% definitely, no tomorrow, finished, done and dusted no.

So true re the feral pressure that will come down on him. As we've gotten more used to FA the pressure is obviously being brought in earlier for players to resign. The standard " I want to leave trade negotiations til the end of the year so I can concentrate on my footy" can't wash in the break can it. So whats Danger gonna say " Id like to leave trade negotiations til the season starts so I can concentrate on having a holiday?" If he doesnt sign by the middle of the trade period I reckon Adelaide will move.

The onus is on Paddy and he has to decide whether he wants to screw over AFC to get to a Hawthorn or Geelong next season, take the money (and the good deal for AFC) and come to us or simply re-sign with them.

I wonder if he has the 'nads to tell Adelaide that he's willing to stay on and then head to a successful club next season, effectively throwing his old club under the bus? And whether or not they'll take him at face value.

Really, if AFC want to minimise risk and get the best deal possible, they should be signing for pick 2 and 3 as soon as possible.

Much as we all feel that Dangerfield will be a big boost to the Club, I am confident that we will see us use picks 2-3 to better effect and gaining 2-4 high calibre players for the midfield or a combination of key position and midfield options, citing last year's Tyson trade as an example.

Agree CB, I would take Brayshaw and do a Tyson deal with the other pick to get another 2 players in.

I don't agree with throwing everything at one player no matter how good at this stage of our "rebuild". This scenario is reminding me of the Moore and Templeton saga back in the 80's. That trade didn't get us far up the ladder even with Moore winning a Brownlow. We need a quantity of good players to fill the gaping holes in our list not just one elite.

I think it comes down to what Dangerfield wants. If he really wants to come back to Victoria then Adelaide won't want to hold on to him. Therefore, Adelaide need to find out now if he is going to want to stay so they can either get a good trade for him, hope that he changes his mind in 2015 or lose him to free agency and receive minimal compensation.

Yes but Tex, Sloane and Danger are all out at the same time, I highly doubt they will be able to match the offers from different clubs for all of these players. I.e. $1M a year for Patty, $700,000 a year for Sloane and Tex.

its quite interesting isnt it. Paul Roos ( and by association the rest of the club ) is playing the line as espoused by himself re FA etc. Hes on the front foot selling the "trade now or suffer later" message. He's showing all that the world of FA is well and truly here and it isnt all good news. However you can minimise your loss or indeed turn it to opportunity if you're open to a new way of thinking.

And are in a better position to add either really top end high draft picks, or add a ready to go star like a Dangerfield. do they get close to the 8 in the next 2 years.. no, but they go up the ladder. In 4 years time.. it is possible that Melbourne have gone past Adelaide, if their talent is realised, and they add the depth and star power they need.

In short, i don't think Dangerfield is winning a flag with either side, but he might end up earning a lot more money, living in his home state, playing with former crow friends and might play finals in 4 years time when Demons could be really on the march.

As I grew up as a spotty teenager and into early adulthood a girl that was sort of in the circles I went around in ( literally sometimes..lol ) happened to turn form a not so ugly duckling into a drop dead model. A lovely lass, not at all affected ( character wise ) by her new found popularity At times over a drink etc I noticed she was less happy than shed been years before. I thought that odd. The world had come to her so what was wrong. It turned out she often spent a lot more time than she preferred alone . Seems men were afraid to talk to her, to ask her out etc for surely they would be rebuffed ans surely this gorgeous woman had any number of suitors. Turns out she didnt as nearly everyone thought the same thing.

The point is ....dont assume. Dont just accept that no one wants to play for us. That no one might not be enticed. Dont automatically think another Melbourne based club would win hands down should Patty decide on a move.

And here is where i think the New Melbourne is doing it ok, they are on the front foot asking, putting it out there. Again dont ask, dont get. You just never know what the answer might be and dont always accept the first answer as fait accompli .
