Melbourne might rethink succession

Didn't see it in any other thread ............

So Caro last night on classified said Simon Goodwin is our number 1 target. Quite simply I don't know what to think but he'll have had some time at Essendon under Hird, some time under Thompson and then 2 years under Roos. Maybe instead of trying to worry about finding the perfect coach you just find someone smart, willing to learn and with good work ethic and you trust them to thrive in the post Roos system.

With no coaches sacked so far and unlikely for any to be this offseason we do have the pick of the system if we convince someone the senior coach in waiting is a good opportunity. So I'm sticking by the succession plan. With Essendon out of the finals but still up in the air with so many other things regarding coaching I wonder what the timeline for Goodwin yet alone any other interviews would be and whether we are waiting to interview candidates from the remaining 6 teams.

Sure Caro is on to Goodwin but it sounds like there's not too much leaking going around. Anyone else heard anything?

You maybe right but IMO the MFC cannot afford any apprentices we need the current hawthorn man in 2017!

I actually think having Roos around after his contract ends and not as senior coach, would be more beneficial too us... Having him float around the club not tied to all the duties that come with being a senior coach, would allow him to really get into the heads of the players... He'd be able to hold one on one training sessions and mental strength training sessions, with the players we have that need extra work...

Maybe we could trial a new system, where we have a training senior coach and a match day senior coach? It should work, as long as they are on the same page...

This year there was a media frenzy because we hadn't chosen a successor. All this does is alleviate that pressure. Gives them some flexibility.

I would seriously sign any successors on contracts that state that they stay as assistant coaches if Alastair Clarkson (or Ross Lyon or John Longmire) become available for the position in 2017. Otherwise we are living in the real world and should go with an apprentice. We can't afford to not have a plan. But safeguarding the contracts should a premiership coach become available might be the creative thinking that could be the best of both worlds.

PJ was very straightforward regarding this - we will either go with a succession plan or we won't. I hope this clears up any confusion.

I understand keeping the options open but would you sign a contract like that ???

Moot point till finals are over.

If I were an assistant and it was just Clarkson as the out clause - ie. 2 years under Roos, if then we can't get Clarkson you become senior coach if we can get him you can either stay as assistant or leave, I might take the chance. At worst you get 2 years under Roos and an option of 3 years under Clarkson all on senior assistant money. 99% chance you get the job.

It would take someone willing to think outside the box. But thats how we got Roos in the first place.

Yep, Roos said earlier on 360 that they had an informal coffee chat with Goodwin. So Caro was hardly breaking news or using her sources for that one. He also said they had spoken to a few people and the whole think would ramp up with formal presentations as the clubs got knocked out of the finals race.

I would still have my money on Kirk at this stage.

Still betting it's Kirk, his contract with Fremantle is over at the end of next year, 3 years under Ross Lyon, one under Roos to get familiar with the list and club, huge part of the bloods culture, knows the game plan inside-out, he really is the obvious candidate, almost too obvious if anything

I think Brett Kirk already has the job.

His played with the swan who had the same game plan and his been assistant coach under Lyon who plays the same game plan.

He is the perfect candidate, he would know the game plan like the back of his hand by now.

Not sold on Kirk, something about him and senior coaching just doesn't jive with me.

would take Kirk over Goodwin any day of the week

Cant stand Goodwin, please god dont let him come to the MFC

For once try adding some substance and credibility to your post h_h, beyond your usual broad sweeping statements.

Ross Lyon out of contract at end of 2016, I wonder if a good financial offer and the end of freos flag window could tempt him?

It is my understanding that Ross is not a development type coach. He is best with sides that are already for finals.

IMO we should not bother recruiting him.

Imagine needing a coach who was good taking a team into finals! I'd still take Lyon anyday, love how Freo play, don't care if they don't win a flag, they have completely changed the perception of their club for a generation at least.....anywhere, anytime. And I love how he has treated Sylvia, a quick example of the MASSIVE difference between a gun senior coach and a rookies like we've had.

Saints went from Premiership contenders to wooden spooners within 4 years largely due to Lyons negligence.

Freo will head the same way.

Don't want him here.

No one has mentioned when van Gaal comes out of contract with Man U.

There would be a real manager...........

Can't win any games though, can he? ;)

If the statement that Ross Lyons is not a development type coach is true. What possible value would he have at the MFC?

The MFC will be in team development for the next four or five seasons as it rebuilds its player list.

I would agree however that an experienced coach is much better than a rookie one any day of the week.

Plus week need a coach that will win lots of flags before OD passes away or starts supporting the Western Bulldogs.

No chance of moving anywhere DF

The Dees or nowhere!

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
