Stuart Dew was 'very close' to joining Demons under Paul Roos

There are a couple of rumours on Twitter that Kirk is on the move as well

I'd love to have Kirk, one of the reasons why Freo has such a dominant midfield.

Might have a bit to do with having Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow...

Using this theory you'd also love to have Mark Neeld from Collingwood.

Hang on...

Having sandilands also wouldn't hurt freos midfield

If Roos picked Dew then that should count for 99%.

But I am glad we didn't get Dew for some reason.

Kirk sounds OK, but as long as he keeps his spiritual side in check for mine. Look at the rubbish he was speaking for channel 7 before for a match intro and I felt like vomiting.

I now think that our next coach is at the club; and has been for at least a year.

My money is on Kirk, knows the game plan/ values/ culture, highly regarded assistant who knows roosys style inside out

Im not sure about Dew. He has a young family and his wife works for the 7 network in sydney. She may not want to move. But I guess if he wants a senior job then he has to go somewhere.

I still think Kirk could be ok or Ling if he gets some experience. Interesting the media talk that we shouldnt bring in an untried coach but if Roosy is there as a mentor then he should be ok. This is why I want Roos to sign for the 3rd year so we dont rush this.

I'm still predicting that Rawlings will get the gig.

^^ This ^^

I reckon that Rawlings will by now also have a pretty good grip on it, as well as being both liked and respected by the players.

But really, does anyone here actually know anything?

Sydney were reluctant to let him go to become 'coach in waiting'. I can't see why after promoting him to senior assistant they would let him go before that contract was up unless he was appointed senior coach. Plus I think he's going to ride the wave of success a bit longer in Sydney and wait for the right job.

I'm not fully convinced on Jade Rawlings, just never really seen the magic in him. But he's in the box seat from a transition point of view in taking over from Roos.

2 more years of Roos first then handing over to someone the players and fans are comfortable with sounds good to me though, much better than worrying about whether you will fire a coach in the next year or so.

Dew can't break his contract unless it's seen as a direct promotion

So then yes he is still an option.

I can't help feeling Dew choose Sydney over us as we were unproven coach killers and we were too much of a risk. While I can understand this position, saying he's now ready because "he's developed"... How much do you really develop in 1/2 a season of footy?

Roo's stuck his neck out and took us on and I would prefer someone all in rather than a fair weathered coach.

My preference goes to Ling after 2 years under Roosy.

Rawlings might have a good existing relationship with the players and have done a good job as an assistant, but does that make you a good senior coach?

I'm not sure.

I think he lacks presence.

And he might be best as a career assistant.

Based on the little that I have seen.

I wouldn't mind having Dew within the coaching staff as I'd be happy to have Sarah Cumming at MFC functions :D

Pia Miller, Sarah Cumming... I can see it now AWESOME!

YES! he's a good coach YES!... ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if Rawlings gets the gig but after the left field choice of Dew, who knows what Roosy has in mind.

Kirk and Ling are both inexperienced but he may think that after 2 years under him they'll be ready.

It's a tough one and I'm sure we are in the right hands; hopefully he will just stay on for another 10 years and 5 flags.

Gee wiz Stuie must have a great sense of humour.

Saw a shot of Dew on the news at the airport.

I wouldn't discriminate against him because of it but wow he's packed the weight back on since his comeback. The man must really put the food away. For all the NFL fans out there he's every chance to be Rex Ryan like.

I think this year One, is all about sorting the list. to see who can be made into a footy player, & which ones can't, or need a fresh change.

I reckon the Roos 3rd year is fait-acompli, unless a premiership coach was to come straight on board. then the current 2 Yrs could become One ?

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
