Obama to Abbott: get out of the way

Seriously? Tony Abbott has just taken climate change OFF the agenda at the G20, as if scrapping The Climate Department, The Climate Commission and yes, soon, the carbon price wasn’t enough. Now he’s literally getting in the way of OTHER countries taking action.

Our PM is meeting with Barack Obama next week in Washington and the President has just put his legacy on the line for climate, cleaning up America’s energy production even in the face of huge opposition. Obama will be busy selling his climate policies, so let’s ask him to give Abbott a copy of Congress’ climate report when they exchange gifts at the White House.

Climate tipping points are threatening to change the very world we live in irreversibly. There’s never been a more important time to act -- if President Obama’s subtle present doesn’t convince Abbott, then he can force him out of the way of other countries and put climate change back on the G20 agenda. You have got to be kidding. Reminiscent of the Y2K bug - at least that got put to bed when the clock ticked over to 12.01 on 1 Jan 2000.

actually the clock is still ticking in our climate. & its got a wake up call with your name on it. when did you set your alarm for? the Y2k was a good wake up xcall for many to get it right, & make necessary changes.

Just like the GFCrisis, financiers were all sceptics before, until they found out just how close we all were to the world economies totally collapsing.

& it hasn't gone away. why do you think the right wing political party's of the West are trying to smash workers rights, conditions, & wages. The system is phucked... the cake is only so big..... & evenly cut slices don't help the current system of boom & bust.

2017 - growth; whats that?

"dee-luded" - perhaps not a bad name (no offence meant).

It could only be the most obscure computer software that had a Y2K problem - and it could only be software written by idiots.

The crap the Company I worked for went thru re Y2K when there was no problem and we knew it was unbeeelieeeeevable. The accountancy firms used scare tactics to prey on old Company Directors who thought computers were some kind of magical devices - not machines programmed by intelligent and responsible human beings with software only being adopted when it was proven. The accountancy firms made a packet and then some of that great scare.

Planes didn't fall out of the sky after we ticked over in to the new millenium etc. etc.

No-one was a sceptic before the GFC happened - they just didn't see it coming - there was no big warning - I agree with you - things are still very dodgy - but I am not sure what that has to do with climate change.

& you you don't even believe what you actually write so how can anyone take you with anything but a mouthful of Brine.

& so the scare of Y2K had no benefit to some, who otherwise may have been caught out with inferior technology? I'm sure that some needed tidying up, & just as sure that many didn't need any change or fix up.

So do you suggest we pay no heed to this Ebola scare as well, & just let the borders open Up?

It pays to take notice of potential harm & not ignore it. but to try not to over-react.

It has everything to do with not ignoring those who warn against a possible impending possible catastrophe. whether that be ebola, the GFC return, a meteor/comet or asteroid attack arriving upon us, or the Weather going awry !

Climate change is happening, as is the global warming; but the skeptics try to use 'mis-information' to cloud the discussion, saying the recent temperatures have dropped.

..... this is the rhodes scholar Tony Abbott scientifically... speaking.

but Global Warning is not uniform in temperature across this globe. it is all about the balance of this planets environment, getting out of its balance, its harmony, that we've enjoyed over a long period of our existence.

the skeptics try, because they don't want their economic structures to change, (ownership)... To say that Global-Warming/Climate-Change is normal & not man made.. as if this is a reason to do nothing... because it is a natural phenomenon. God will take care of us all, as long as we go to church once a week.

but not the aborigines & other unwashed??? (ownership)... although they are culturally more respectful & thankful for what they are given by this planet & their gods. & they're churches are far more respectful, & organic, than most of ours.

I don't believe that a God of creative means, would care about what any sot of celebration area/church looked like, as long as it contained love, appreciation, respect & a generosity of spirit, coming from caring & concern for all life.. for his/her/it's creation. Not via exclusion & rivalry of other life.

No problem with you believing what you choose to.

Re your post prior to this one - no idea how you could "know" that I don't believe what I write - which of course is not the case.

And I have no idea what perceived climate change and ebola have got to do with each other?

the first line of your post 4... or it meant nothing at all? which in case means you didn't believe in your words anyway.

Back to your topic of course climate change needs to be a discussion and decision topic for the G20 this year. Maybe Tony could advocate a world "Green Army" of under paid, under aged people to fix global warming! Millions of kids planting trees and picking up papers could turn it all around!

he'll probably try to help blow it all up first, then conscript the youth to come in clean it up, & try to rebuild it, with Asian know-how & bosses, & our unemployed as cheap laborers.

Kids planting trees? you talkin about 'w'abbott? he wants no trees & only grass paddocks for cows & sheep. & to dig deep holes in whenever.

Not much footy happening worth discussing. I noticed that 2014 is officially the hottest year globally on record and adds to the 12 other hottest years this century, only surpassed by 1998. Any thoughts on whether there may be a disturbing trend here? And is there a problem that we should be dealing with? Total silence I notice from our "AWOL" environment ministe, I notice.

Clearly climate scientists are not real scientists

I know that cos Rupert told me

what would they know anyway, they've just got nuisance science... are but the science of money & of greed, now your talking a science that speaks to most.

Instrumental records only date back to 1850 and that is coincidentally the end of the Little Ice Age. I'm thankful it has warmed since then. The 18 year hiatus we are currently experiencing, is acknowledged by the IPCC, yet is completely contrary to their earlier predictions of rapid warming. When your predictions don't materialise it is a fair indication your theory is sick.

No it is not. Feel free to point out the fault in my argument rather than draw ridiculous analogies. I'll give you a helping hand but Tony Abbott or but Andrew Bolt aren't arguments either.

And if the world cools, warms mildly or stays in hiatus will you thank him for drawing attention to a group-think faith in catastrophe?

Juxtaposed. I think you'll find most of the broadcasters you define as shock jocks have varying opinions on man's influence on climate. The only think they have in common is that the alarmist view is completely overstated. This is also now the scientific opinion of the IPCC.

Interesting, because according to the general summary of the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report which was released last year:

General
  • Warming of the atmosphere and ocean system is unequivocal. Many of the associated impacts such as sea level change (among other metrics) have occurred since 1950 at rates unprecedented in the historical record.
  • There is a clear human influence on the climate
  • It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of observed warming since 1950, with the level of confidence having increased since the 4th report
  • IPCC pointed out that the longer we wait to reduce our emissions, the more expensive it will become

The only think they have in common is that the alarmist view is completely overstated.

And the only thing that the scientific community has in common is their view on man's contribution to the real problem of climate change.

What has widely varying views is the effect that actions put in place by Governments to combat this problem will have. I have little faith that plans put into place by many Governments ( especially our Government) will have any impact what so ever.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
