My 3 word player analysis V WCE

Featured Replies

You people should watch more closely. Nathan Jones was involved (and central to) at least 3 turnover goals.

Surely the team total of 11 goals from turnovers is the new AFL record?

Dom Tyson will be a star - our only current candidate for "elite midfielder".

Toumpas is still not quick, nor is Trenners. But both can play. Cross is a dead set Barry-battler.

Pederson and Spencer should never play again for MFC once we have a viable alternatives.

despite the many accolades it wasnt Nathans finest day

Nathan Jones was brilliant except two or three poor moments. Most others were shite except two or three ok moments.

You are correct BB. However, I would argue that the mistakes he made today are outweighed by his courageous and gut busting example to others. We have players with more natural ability than Jones (and I don't have to name them). Unfortunately, when the going gets tough, and it often does at Melbourne they fold. Jones keeps going. Jesus, I am glad he is resilient, because if he ever gets injured - we are fully and properly [censored].

Nathan Jones is an anti-Demon. Where does he get off doing things all fast and competitively? And why is he so intent on trying to break lines and get the ball forward quickly? Does he realise who he plays for?

When Jones gets near the ball I feel like my baby has unpressed the slow motion button on my remote control...but I always manage to grab it back off him when the next player gets near the ball so I can ease the speed off a bit again.

We need to kick more goals so why would dropping out leading goal scorer be a good idea

OMG.

Jones endeavour is elite his defensive running is non existent. Many times his opponent ran off from the contest and kicked goals. His good though out weighs his bad many times over when compared to watts, trengove and grimes. Toumpas looked always injured or exhausted when running any further than ten metres. Watts always looks exhausted and has no body strength. Dunns kicking was very good.

Very hard to find many melbourne players who would get a game in another team.

Took the kids to the game, they don't want to come anymore. Another wasted year, demoralising the supporters two rounds in, probably an improvement, it was round one last year.

N.Jones - never gave up

Grimes - overwhelmed and underperformed

Watts - the bad Watts

Toumpas - prolific but slow

Frawley - always provided contest

Trengove - still going nowhere

Byrnes - tried but ineffective

Tyson - classy and persistent

Dunn - skillful and effective

Cross - prolific and tough

Pederson - fat and useless

Michie - tried but beaten

Vince - tried but beaten

Kennedy -Harris - provided some energy

McDonald - limited but useful

Howe - better second half

Spencer - destroyed in centre

Bail - not league standard

M.Jones - very limited skills

Terlich - loose and lacking

Fitzpatrick - was still concussed

Georgiou - tried against odds

Pederson tried his guts out both ends of he ground maybe you wern't at the game

I've seen a lot of people mention Toumpas' lack of pace but for me it's not that big a concern. He modelled his game as a junior on Bryce Gibbs and Leigh Montagna, neither of whom are what you'd call quick. For him to take the next step I'd like to see him get more involved. 25, 30 possession games I'm talking. He would rival Watts, Dunn, Tyson or Vince as best kick in the team. If he gets his numbers up he'll be a gun.

Gee where have I heard that before dont worry about his pace or skills "he will be a gun"

Re Jones - The poor [censored] is entitled to make mistakes. He carries the side.

Agree about Pedo but Spencer busts a gut. He was in a no win today trying to take those two big bastards on his own.

agree re Jones. he was very impressive today. i would also add that he prevented quite a few turnovers through both sheer hard work and managing to collect some very bad passes.

really not fair on Pedersen though. he worked very hard. it's not his fault that the mids took soooo long to make a decision that he ran out of spaces to lead to. worse, they often ignored his good leads in order to pass to... another mid (start all over again!).

I think I remember an AFL Stat that stated that two thirds of all goals in the AFL result from turnovers.

Pederson does work hard but it's all for nothing when his agility, leap and pace match that of an obese hippopotamus.

Pedersen is a worker but just does not have the skills for an AFL footballer.

I think Jones is a star, regardles of a few mistakes. It is easy to look great when the team is on a roll and you have half a dozen quality mates to take the pressure off. The reason he has turnovers is he gets the ball and is under constant pressure without propoer support. This bloke stands up for this club week in and week out often alone and I am happy to cut hims some slack. Stick him in the weagles mid field and he would shine.

In sort

Jones - absolute star

Pedersen - skill free workhorse

The Toump is a worry. We dont need another low draft pick who is a bit Ho Hum. We need game changers and excitment machines not plodders.

My three words in comparison to this game last year.

"We are better"

edit: Unfortunately so were they

N.Jones - Was In every pack situation and a gun
Grimes - Overated and makes many mistakes & fumbles
Watts - Tried but didnt look interested.
Toumpas - Tried but lacks match condition and better players around him
Frawley - Had enough of the rubbish non existant pressure upfield methinks..Wont sign at this rate but played well against WC.
Trengove - Back to the twos to gain form. Overated. No pace.
Byrnes - Had a go but overated.
Tyson - Showed skill & reliabilty to make good decisons & is a future gun
Dunn - Provided stability & had a go.
Cross - Was in the trenches with Jonesy. Tries.
Pederson - No confidence in his own abilty and fumbles consistantly. Not the player we all thought he could be.
Michie - Showed real glimpses of talent and can read the play well in pack situations. Creates opportunitys.
Vince - Tried but didnt do enough much like the whole team
Kennedy -Harris - Showed enthusiasm for a contest
McDonald - Fair considering his leg would have been shot.
Howe - Excused due to no fwd assistance or bad delivery.
Spencer - Poor Tap ruckman and uncoordinated at best.Twos.
Bail - Never going to arrive and is VFL standard
M.Jones - Tried to create which I admire...chases hard.
Terlich - Works hard but for not much in return
Fitzpatrick - Not sighted barely probably shouldnt have played
Georgiou - Has composure but had his hands full all day

Besides Chip....who at Melbourne actually has some sort of Physical presence?????

I was taking note of the WC players Physiques....majority are built like tanks....

Demon players look like pencil neck geeks still.... GET THEM IN THE GYM ROOSY!!!

I agree mostly with the analysis except for a couple of ratings. I thought Pederson tried very hard. I like Gergiou's endeavour, he is listed in the footy record as 187 cm's the same height as Grimes and stood Dean Cox at times and gave a decent contest. I think he's got the spirit we need.

Again I thought Dunn was one of our better players and Jones continues to lead by example but doesn't get enough followers.

Most Melbourne players barring Jones are happy to let the opposition get first hands on the ball. Is this lack of courage or confidence?

I'm okay with Roosy's game plan however if we continue to move the ball in to the forward line as slowly as we have been we will be lucky to get more than 5 -10 goals every game.

Dunn works well in defence. In the forward line he gave nothing.

Frawley defended ok but his attacking flair and disposal were poor.

Pederson - I'd swap him for Gysberts and he's been delisted.

Byrnes - our worst player kicked the most goals - how bad is that.

Midfield OK.

WE NEED TALL FORWARDS.

Even proppy bring in Dawes & Gawn.

Send Roos to Mitch Clark with a message. "Mitch stand in the square and we will bomb it in, you only need to grab a few per game, one leg is plenty, come back please"

There are a lot of post regarding Grimes and his perceived high percentage of mistakes

Grimes disposal efficiency yesterday was 86% from 22 touches. That is oustanding efficiency.

No Byrnes No Melbourne

I found it a little frustrating that our starting positions on opposition players was good but our reading of the play was so poor that the opponent would end up 5 metres clear. Giorgiou actually reads the game well and could influence a contest by being close when the ball arrived - I thought that Grimes was two steps behind all day.

imjust mentioned in another thread about Jones and his lack of disciple and skill errors really hurt us early.

What are your thought on Byrnes and Fitzpatrick?

It's Game Day and the Demons face a monumental task as they take on the top-of-the-table Magpies in one of the biggest games on the Dees calendar: the King's Birthday Big Freeze MND match. Can the Demons defy the odds and claim a massive scalp to keep their finals hopes alive?

It was freezing cold at Mission Whitten Stadium where only the brave came out in the rain to watch a game that turned out to be as miserable as the weather.
The Casey Demons secured their third consecutive victory, earning the four premiership points and credit for defeating a highly regarded Collingwood side, but achieved little else. Apart perhaps from setting the scene for Monday’s big game at the MCG and the Ice Challenge that precedes it.
Neither team showcased significant skill in the bleak and greasy conditions, at a location that was far from either’s home territory. Even the field umpires forgot where they were and experienced a challenging evening, but no further comment is necessary.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
