Whispering_Jack 31,365 Posted February 12, 2014 Author Posted February 12, 2014 I think both coaches would be reasonably happy at the outcome and that Collingwood, which fielded a much weaker team on paper would be buoyed by the fact that a few of their inclusions, notably Adams and White will certainly add to the mix. I couldn't help but be impressed by the exciting play of Stokes and (to a lesser extent on the night) Varcoe and wonder if we could one day get similar from JKH and Barry. I've only seen one training run this year but the former impresses me as one who could make a significant contribution early even if the coach is generally opposed to promoting players too soon in their careers. I didn't stay up all night but my other heroes from a big evening in sport are Shaun Marsh (ton) and Torah Bright (silver).
Sir Why You Little 37,450 Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Could only listen on the radio with Huddo screaming non stop. But it was a high standard February Hit Out. I certainly hope we can show the same intensity on friday night. Yes it is a dress rehearsal & we should treat it as such so we can be ready to win in Round 1

Sir Why You Little 37,450 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Is Brisbane the new Melbourne?there have been no lions players mentioned that i knew. Switched over to 774 to the cricket.
Deemotivated 550 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Mercy rule for nab games... Jesus!!
P-man 13,367 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 14 of thief best 22 missing. Leppa overdoing it a tad by throwing ALL the kids to the wolves.
rjay 25,424 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 14 of thief best 22 missing. Bit of an overcorrection from Leppa in throwing ALL the kids to the wolves. Wouldn't have thought it was a good move.
old dee 24,082 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Wouldn't have thought it was a good move. We should know we have been doing it for the last five years.

P-man 13,367 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Why? Gives them all a reference point in February. The game means nothing but experience. I'm sure they gained a lot out of watching the other side get leather poisoning. A few senior players to sure up their defense and help maintain structures would not have gone astray and still allowed plenty of the youngsters some experience. Anyhow, not debating this cause I really don't care that much.
RalphiusMaximus 6,112 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Yeah, I saw the scores of tonight's game and thought there may be a new whipping boy in town, but then I saw the lists. Sure the Hawks weren't at full strength, but the Lions played their 2nds tonight. Seems they're more interested in getting a look at the kids than competing at this stage.
hulkhogan666 142 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 People say "it's only pre-season, who cares", no one really does, but you can't afford to have a thrashing like that... Especially us, we're in a brittle state still and we can still crumble. I'm not confident that we'll win tomorrow, and that's fine, but I'm expecting at least somewhat of an effort.
Lordweaver 235 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I'm tipping a victory, it always happens when a new coach takes the reigns, plenty to prove and Richmond will be taking it easier I reckon
rjay 25,424 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 We should know we have been doing it for the last five years. Yep, looked like a case of poorly considered coaching for me and I reckon I've seen it enough to know what it looks like by now 'old dee'.
Elwood 3184 1,365 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Does the match review panel operate for these games? I'm sure I saw a Geelong player cop a broken jaw and lose some teeth the other night in which looked to me to be a head high clash. I thought that was at least an automatic referral?
Sir Why You Little 37,450 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 You get nothing out of being soundly trashed except zero confidence.not if the coach needs to see what he has got to work with. If the paddle pops trot out the same list of kiddies in game 2 then i will agree

Bedraggled Dee 336 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 You get nothing out of being soundly trashed except zero confidence. I agree mate, I dont recon floggings at any time do any good, especially for young kids. The old addage applies train well play well. These games are traning runs and they would have got nothing positive out of it in fact it may well have had a negative effect. I think the game showed Leppas inexperience as a coach and makes me glad we didnt go down that path again. Contrast this to Roos comments that he wexpects the older heads to take a few hits for the youngsters.

dee-luded 2,959 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Wouldn't have thought it was a good move. its february & hot. time for the kids to play in nothing games, before the real talent is unpacked closer to the season proper. the kids will step back to the next level as the senior players are ready to start playing. its a good opportunity for the younger ones to get some AFL exposure with no sheep stations riding the result. We don't want our guns to tire in the heat & get injured from fatigued muscles.

We don't want our guns to tire in the heat & get injured from fatigued muscles. You know we did play most of our backline and midfield 'guns' tonight whilst Richmond didn't leave Cotchin, Deledio or Martin in the guts for huge periods. I'd definitely say on average that Jones, Vince, Tyson, Cross and Trengove put in a lot more minutes than Richmond's top 5 mids. And similarly we played pretty much our first choice backline (given Garlo's injury) and Richmond did still put up a reasonably score without Riewoldt. Then again those we did play have been fit and training at decent intensity and in hot weather so it's not like we asked them to do something completely foreign. And I do recognise that we have plenty of talent in reserve for the ruck and forward line situation. Although I feel we found half our round 1 forward line out there tonight in Howe, Bail and JKH. Looking forward to the mini Showdown on Sunday. Port and Adelaide are both pretty decent teams to watch.

Looking forward to the mini Showdown on Sunday. Port and Adelaide are both pretty decent teams to watch. I was really referring to our tall forwards, who have had a few niggles over the years, & young hogan. so I would wait on them until nearly March. So I think Dawes in a couple of weeks as he's mentioned, Clarke a little longer than Dawes, & hogan I'd hold off from the forward line until Dawes is back & hopefully Clark as well. I wouldn't throw Hogan into a half functioning forwardline. Hogan has to be 3rd tall, or not play at the minute. or play him back. I think todays game was to go small as its Mid February, & we needed to get our midsized players taking responsibility, without any shortcuts. they had to work their buts off without bomb long options. I like the way that Roos is setting us up at this point in this season. I like his way of thinking, & manipulating the players options, to get them to play the way he wants.
