I can only go on what I've read and some limited footage but Freeman appeals because he is big (89 i believe) and has speed. These are two attributes we need in the middle.

Chance of this thread being bumped in a few years: strong.

Few rounds into 2014!

If I was Jason Taylor and I was about to read out my first ever pick for the Dees, I think I'd have to go with McCarthy and then log straight onto Demonland to watch the meltdown. We've pretty much considered every other option on Demonland over the past few months. Time to consider the best key position player after Boyd.

We already have him, his name is Jesse Hogan except he is better then Boyd.

Hence why we'd go into meltdown.

McCarthy will be gone by our pick. Collingwood will commit daylight robbery and nab both Scharenberg & Aish (both top 3 touted halfway through the year). Amazing how quickly things have changed. We stick with selecting Freeman over Salem, I feel that Salem was seriously in contention, but we appear to have liked Freeman for a while.

Cathy Freeman just retired so we might as well take Nathan!

Is the draft on anything apart from foxtel??

Just read the draft will be on the afl app

If we hadn't been robbed of our rights for a Priority Pick rightfully earned on the basis of our two wins last year (by the AFL egged on by 17 Clubs jealous of Hogan) then we would have both Boyd and Hogan (plus pick 3 to trade for Dyson). We have been dealt a major injustice IMO!

I'm still coming to terms with Collingwood landing Grundy at pick 18 last year ...

I reckon Collingwood will take McCarthy at Pick 6. Them and Brisbane have been the two clubs linked to him, so I reckon that's why they wanted Pick 6 so badly, so they can beat Brisbane to the punch. They know that at least one of Bontempelli, Freeman or Salem will still be there at Pick 10 (whom they've also been linked to), so they'll grab McCarthy early.

Still reckon the Dogs will take Scharenberg at 4 and Aish will drift to the Lions at Pick 7.

I think we would take Aish if he was available, same with Scharenberg. I don't think either will be available to us.

Interesting how Scharenberg has drifted back in the Demonland poll though it is no surprise that Freeman has firmed again. They were running neck to neck for a brief time when somebody first suggested that Scharenberg may be a real chance.

I think we’ve drawn a line through Aish. Club appears to be after a player who can win their own ball whilst offering our midfield a point of difference.

The knock on Aish would be the lack of proven ability to win the contested ball, his frame (may put on weight, but will take some time) and slight fear of the go home factor.

I’m a pretty big wrap for Aish, and think that all of those concerns can be mitigated by Aish’s quality as a player and reported quality as an individual, but if Melbourne were convinced he wasn’t the way to go at pick 2, I’m certain they’ll reach the same conclusion at 9 (if Aish is available there).

Not so sure, but don't think he will be there either. I think Demonland has put a line through Aish but not necessarily the club.

Whilst we have signalled our want for an inside ball winner. I still hold out hope we will get Olly Wines next year. Therefore I would be happy to have an player like Aish, who may need more time, come into our side if he was available at pick 9. He was classed as the best midfielder available for some time.. I can't wait to read the headline in October next year. "Wines signals intentions to play with Viney"

More a case of Scharenburg is unlikely to be available at pick 9

As nice as it would be, Wines will not leave Port Adelaide next year.

Would anyone be happy if we took Dunstan? Bit of a reach? Slid down the draft order over the year, and I haven't watched enough of any of them to really make a call, but from what I've seen and heard I'd be happy if we took him at Pick 9 provided someone like Scharenberg wasn't also available.

Nope. Pick 9 is defintely a reach, Dunstan a 15-25 prospect.

Not quick, no right foot.

Matt Crouch is a better extractor, but Dunstan can take play forward and is quite strong overhead. I think his endurance is quite good, will get to multiple contests and his hands are elite.

Given our already one-paced midfield, I can’t see how he’d be a better fit than Salem or Freeman, who also offer greater upside.

If questions over skill, take Salem. He has the more damaging boot, and long kicks to the 3 big boys will be our strengths

Would love Dunstan at the Dees! He may not be the most athletically gifted but he has all the attributes that we need. He is a strong leader that will give 100% all day, he can win his own ball and make good decisions. It's time we stop picking on 'potential' and get players that aren't afraid to put their head over it and get the pill. Seeing Viney and Dunstan in the centre square for the next decade is something that should excite supporters.

Just because Freeman is big and fast doesn't mean he will be anything like Dangerfield. He could easily become a cross between Tapscott and Blease, leaving us once again with a first round flop. It's time we look at those with runs on the board as opposed to those with a higher 'ceiling.' Last year everyone was worried about Wines going to us because they didn't think he had as much improvement in him as others, but now it would be hard to find a single person that wouldn't pick him.

Play it safe Melbourne and go the ready made player rather than the possible once in a generation player.

I wouldn't. Sorry.

I agree about Freeman. If he was like Dangerfield he'd go number two.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
