My take on the list as it stands

5 x Backs (Frawley, Garland, Dunn, McDonald, Pedersen)

5 x Backs/mids (Clisby, Grimes, Strauss, Terlich, Jetta,)

13 x Mids (Bail, Barry, Evans, M Jones, N Jones, Michie, McKenzie, Nicholson, Toumpas, Trengove, Tyson, Vince, Viney)

5 x Forward/mids (Howe, Kent, Blease, Tapscott, Watts)

5 x Forwards (Byrnes, Clark, Dawes, Fitzpatrick, Hogan)

3 x Rucks (Jamar, Spencer. Gawn)

I would have thought we have an abundance of talls both back and forward and astill a bit shy on quality small forwards and runing backs. I also think we have one too many rucks. The trading we have done and the drafts should go a long way to fixing th midfield

Nice idea for a thread BD, however don't agree with your point apropos our ruck stocks.
Jamar can scarcely be considered a ruckman, given both his perennial injuries and total ineffectiveness when playing.
Gawn is one knee-reco away from retirement.
Spencer is a long term battler.
Fitzpatrick is flat-out not a ruckman.

I'd say that's a precarious situation to be in. Wouldn't be surprised if we went after Jolly or someone similar as insurance.

I think we could definitely afford to shed a couple of forwards and forward/mids for genuine midfielders as well as probably one of those tall backs. The best teams at the moment are showing that an abundance of midfielders is the way to go.

Hardly an abundance of tall backs. Frawley, Garland & McDonald then Dunn (not tall enough to take a tall forward) & Pedersen ( recruited as a forward/ ruck). An injury to one of the first three leaves our backline very short on tall quality.

Agreed - first thought after seeing the post was we have a shortage/issue with the ruck department. Spencer I don't see as AFL quality.

Also - no small forward.

We could look at Jeremy Laidler as a depth backman or he could take Dunn's spot and Dunn becomes the depth player..

Too many NQR midfielders (how many of Bail, Barry, Evans and Nicholson would get a game at Footscray?)

No small forward.

What we need

Defense: Another key defender would be nice but Garland/Dunn can play tall. Another mid sized defender would be my first preference to replace Dunn in the team. Could easily play 2 key defenders and 2 Garland's and use one deep, one up the ground. We also need to clean out some of the small defenders. 6 guys for 2-3 spots doesn't make sense. Draft some young midfielders who can develop as depth defenders ie. Zak Jones

Forwards: 1 dangerous small forward, as many as possible midfield/forward players, same as for defenders. Draft guys with the ability for both roles

Rucks: A young ruck to replace Jamar. Either a 198-200cm guy who can play forward as well or a 205cm primary ruck either is fine

Mids: Just more!
