Rally in Fed Square on Sunday for the ABC....If you care about the National Broadcaster and wish it to continue to Archive Australia's History..

Then come in and show your support

This Government we have now are just Liars and Abbott is a complete psychopath

His speeches at the G20 tell me that...

They must be removed.

the right wing conservatives want to slowly strangle both the ABC & SBS as advertising dollars are getting tighter with TV I presume, like the paper press, the internet is gaining a stranglehold.

It appears the government & business are up to this, trying to choke off the public broadcasters, & CH-7 are right into this Re the VFL telecasts etc... they will bleed the Public Broadcasters dry of funds, like they do with the public Hospitals & Schools.

Pretty soon Free to Air TV will be a thing of the past,,,,, so the Government & the Private TV stations can get a stranglehold on content, then they will put everything onto Pay per view Internet TV

the people have to take back their power

UK Tories slam Tony Abbott on climate policy

art-tony-620x349.jpg

Tony Abbott: described as "eccentric".

The attitude of Prime Minister Tony Abbott to the global challenges of climate change is "eccentric", "baffling" and "flat earther", according to a group of senior British Conservatives.

The group, including Prime Minister David Cameron's Minister for Energy and a former Thatcher Minister and chairman of the Conservative Party, says Mr Abbot's position on climate change represents a betrayal of the fundamental ideals of Conservatism and those of his political heroine, Margaret Thatcher.

In a series of wide-ranging, separate interviews on UK climate change policy with The Age, they warn that Australia is taking enormous risks investing in coal and will come under increasing market and political pressure to play its part in the global battle against climate change.

Their comments come almost 25 years to the day since former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher addressed the United Nations to place climate change on the global environmental agenda. "It is mankind and his activities which are changing the environment of our planet in damaging and dangerous ways," she said

Mr Abbott, as recently as June, insisted he should not be stereotyped as a conventional traditionalist, declaring he wanted to be a "reforming conservative" in the mould of Mrs Thatcher.

According to Lord Deben, chairman of the independent Climate Change Commission and a minister in both the Thatcher and Major governments, Australia will come under increasing market pressure to respond to the global shift toward renewable energy.

A former chairman of the British Conservative Party, Lord Deben said Mr Abbott has betrayed the fundamental tenets of conservatism itself.

"I have no doubt that people like David Cameron will be saying to Tony Abbott 'look conservatives are supposed to conserve, they are supposed to hand on to the next generation something better than they received themselves'."

Tim Yeo, chairman of the UK's parliamentary select committee on energy and climate change and a former environment minister under John Major, likened those who question the existence and the science of climate change as "the flat earthers of the 16th century".

"Some of us are very perplexed. I was last in Australia at the beginning of last year, before the election and had conversations with people on both sides of the political divide. I was amazed at some of the views.

"If I was Australian, I'd be concerned if my country's economic future and prosperity became dependent on continued coal export."

The United Kingdom led the world in 2008 by legislating for long-term, ambitious emissions reductions of 80 per cent by 2050 – and has already achieved a 25 per cent drop on 1990 levels. In June, David Cameron opened the world's largest offshore wind farm with 175 turbines in the Thames Estuary.

Almost 20 per cent of Britain's electricity is now produced by renewables, with eight per cent powered by wind – equivalent to about 6.5 million homes.

The UK's energy market reforms and the drive to transform the economy to a low carbon model are supported by all the major political parties.

Greg Barker, David Cameron's Minister for Energy and Climate Change until June this year said: "I think there is a lot of concern about Australia and yes, perhaps it is disproportionate versus its place in the global economy. But because of [our] close historical, emotional and family ties, people are concerned, slightly baffled by the approach that Australia is taking which looks, actually, slightly eccentric," he said.

Mr Abbott declined to comment.

Abbott government’s claim that Great Barrier Reef isn’t in danger defies science says expert

THE Abbott government’s claim that the Great Barrier Reef isn’t in danger defies all available science, a leading international expert says.

Professor Terry Hughes, who is the director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, says there’s an extraordinary disconnect between the government’s position and what scientists across the globe believe.

He says even the federal government’s own reef outlook report, released earlier this year, found the reef in poor condition and deteriorating, with climate change the primary threat.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop this week revealed she’d challenged US President Barack Obama over his climate change speech on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brisbane. She said her office had sent him a briefing on federal preservation efforts, after he used the speech to warn natural wonders like the reef are under direct threat without climate change action.

“We do not believe it is in danger,” Ms Bishop told Sky News.

“In fact the Australian government is making every effort to ensure the Great Barrier Reef is preserved for generations to come.” Prof Hughes said he couldn’t explain why Ms Bishop’s views were so far removed from the science. “I think you’ll have to ask her that,” he told AAP.

“It’s just not credible to say you are protecting the Great Barrier Reef while doing nothing about climate change.”

He said scientists had also roundly condemned the recent draft 2050 reef plan, produced by the Federal and Queensland governments. Government support for the development of the vast Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee basin was also inconsistent with reef protection, he said.

Mr Obama’s speech highlighted how out of step Australia was on climate change policy.

I don't much care truly who is in power as long as they look out for the people, the lowest common denominator first, & foremost. some thingS are just non-negotiable's. like FREE to Air TV... the public healthcare system, & public education.

when the elected officials start to try to undermine the peoples basic staples, its time to fight the bastards & then Sack them.

our elected officials should not be bowing to the whims of some who run organisations, & the organisations themselves... since when did organisations become more important than lives & peoples welfare.

Money the root of all evil. or should that be power & status, the root of all evils.

uncle abbott, please pull your finger from the pie.

stop this "attitude of entitlement", which causes the Rich to send their monies off-shore to Tax Havens such as the 'Bermudas'.

they are sending our money, overseas .

we allow them to trade amongst us, & to have the benefit of our patronisation of their products, only for them to be selfish.

stop attacking ABC & public medias, & our Health system, Education system & Public Transport systems,

and pull Your finger from the "Australian Pie"....

Arise Sir Phillip Duke of Edinburgh, Knight of Australia!! Oh dear, is this Tony setting himself up for some reciprocal "gong" down the track from Liz? Is there a vacancy for the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports at the moment?

arise sir r'abbott, come out of your hole. where ever you are.

apparently he was visiting warren, & O/S around the time they decided to call the QLD snap election. the one they had planned a month in advance, but timed it for the r'abbott to be O/S on pm's duties, & then too busy on holidays to visit the northern state.

he's been running like a shot hare, round & round, when he ends nobody knows.

I would think he is setting himself up for a tilt at "Leader of the Opposition". And I have to say he is doing a sterling job thus far.

This has me scratching my head.

Surely Abbott has advisers who would have said to him, Phil the Greek is a top bloke but you are on a hiding to nothing with this one. Politically, why on earth would you put him up for knighthood ? I honestly think he likes to be contrary for the sake of it.

maybe he thought demoting the duke to a common knight would win him favour with the left?

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
