Melbourne has moved on from Roos

Featured Replies

Don't get me wrong I want Williams too but is he to out there or too much of a risk with sponsors?

Will he boost the membership?

This is my concerns.

I'm not being smart here but how are Chocos achievements so far behind those of Roos?

Both created culture at their respective clubs, yes Ports died off but the players must take some responsibility. I think Choco is ahead of Roos with regards to tactics. Yes Port got flogged by Geelong a few years back in September but they played above themselves just to get there. For mine the cats would have beaten anyone that day.

Seems to be a mindset getting Choco is getting 2nd best.

I have little love for him.

IMO he inherited a very good side at Port. Most coaches with that list could have done as well as he did.

IMO a few could have achieved more.

Why did he get passed over at GWS?

Why do my Richmond friends say we are welcome to him?

Are we sure he got passed over at GWS? I recall some commentary that he left GWS because he wanted to live in Melbourne (because his wife wanted to. And quite frankly, who wouldn't?)

Melbourne has moved on from Paul Roos to fill its vacant senior coach position

Finally, we hear they are scouting the other main contenders.

It's down to three now - Williams, Eade and Craig.

With the stuff coming from the players about Craig, he is firming as my most desirable prospect.

There is absolutely no urgency on this.

None of Roos, Craig, Williams or Eade are going anywhere.

Plenty of time to interview and assess.

Easy to have an opinion from outside but it will come down to those who have been selected to decide.

FWIW, I like Craig or Eade. Others will have a different view. I will be condident with whoever we pick from this field.

1 no I am not but it could easily be a cover for not getting the job.

2 it depends on where you live, just like Melbourne there are lots of good parts and lots of very ordinary.

I can understand people not living in cities because their families are elsewhere, but it is my experience from spending a fair bit of time in most state capitals that they are all good if you choice your location well.

You may never say words with more accuracy than those above rpfc.

Spot on right now as you say we have

Debt

No chairman

No full time coach

No long term CEO

The worst playing list in the competition

Easy beats who sit second last and have won six games out of the last 38.

As you say our brand has been in the toilet for six years and gets worse by the year.

Yet Roos still said OTC that we are an attractive side to coach. Go figure!

Old dee I have said this a number of times so once more isn't going to hurt.

Williams left GWS cause they had a verbal arrangement that he would take over the senior coaching gig at the end of his first yr as assistant. Then the dastardly Kevin Sheedy took the reins for another yr as head coach.

This is why Williams left cause there is no guarantee that the old coot won't do it again.

absolutely we are attractive, someone gets trenners and watts playing like all australians and we do what port has done and they go down as the best coach ever

and the biggest problem i'd say is belief

Even if that is true I still don't like him for the other reasons plus a couple more!

IMO they are not all Australian material.

Good players yes but not All Aust!

Fair enough old dee we can't like everyone otherwise the world would be a boring place.

i wonder how trenners would go in a lecras role? he is pretty handy overhead

He has said no at the moment. My take on this is he doesn't want to coach the dees however if a better prospect comes such as west coke he will then want to coach.

Yet Roos still said OTC that we are an attractive side to coach. Go figure!

What's to "go figure"? He also stated that he is not interested in coaching at present... that was not a statement limited to the MFC, but about coaching in general. What he said is entirely correct for any coach that has the fire in the belly; which unfortunately, he doesn't appear to have at the moment.

reference the threads topic.... we probably haven't !! ^_^

It will come down to whom the AFL want as our senior coach.

They will want their money back in a few years time & how this will happen is by getting the Demons winning more games than they lose.

Thus supporters like me and sponsors get back on board and re open the wallet.

A B Grade Coach or Whoever is left will not cut it.

It is July. Many months will pass before a final decision is made.

Roos is still in the mix, he just wants to get off the back page.

IMO

I hear what your saying but will have to agree that we won't see eye to eye on this one.

Clarko has an all star team yet can't beat Geelong , plus choked/ were outplayed against the Swans last year. Choco had Port as minor premiers for two or three years running before finally breaking through against one of the greatest teams of all time. Not even the might of Sheedy or Malthouse could topple them come the last Saturday in September. The Lions made a lot of people look stupid.

The supposed passing over has already been answered by DemonOx.

My Richmond mates think he is worthy of hanging on to.

The list is now three ?? How is that, I thought a prerequisite was having already one a flag. The list is then one.

Well AD has come out last night and said the financial package to assist the MFC is supposedly worth around $2.5M, though not one dollar is to assist us in paying for a high profiled coach.

It is simply funds to pay out MN, CS, CC and fund the "slow rebuild" for the future.

"All I can say is that the reports the AFL is somehow funding the recruitment of some coach at a very large [sum], whoever it may be, it's just not true," Demetriou told Fox Footy's AFL 360 on Tuesday night.

I agree with you WYL, It's all to keep it out of the media and seem fair to the other 17 clubs. Or the simple fact that the AFL can trust PJ 100%.

Can't wait to see how two head coaches that went head to head in numerous, spiteful and intense local derbies get along on the same team.

It's Choco time! #chokeyourselfwithatie to trend worldwide the day he's appointed.

Damages our brand?

God, I hate that term.

1. No it doesn't. We shouldn't rush this, we can wait until October if we want to.

2. What 'brand'? We are a terrible, shell of a footy club right now trying to put together a Board, get a Footy Manager and a coach, being run by a AFL paratrooper. Disney we ain't.

Alright then. Substitute 'brand' with 'perception'. And yes, our image can be tarnished further by this.

First couple of years i would never ever thought James Mcdonald would be an All Australian just saying.

Very stupid statement.

Please if Nick Maxwell can get one then it gives hope to anyone

I might concede Watts but not Trengove.

Average player at present that may become better IMO that is the limit

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.
