i can see the reason behind it though, toumpas is a classy leader and something different, plus we got viney already, i think toumpas skills will be a huge asset for us in terms of kicking to our tall forwards advantage, although you are right, wines is better right now.

Yes. We need players RIGHT NOW to get this old tired club firing. Not in 3 years.

We do not require a different player at this point.

Meat & Potatoes grunt will get the engine turning over.

Toumpas is a talent. But only when the backbone is in place.

Another blunder in 6 years of crap.

Posted

Wines has grunt... Toumpas probably has more class.

Im not saying for one moment that Dimitri isnt making a fist of it...Just Olivers is bigger Simples !!! and hes doing it NOW

and Ollie is playing in a top 8 side: Dimirti is playing in the very worst midfield in memory.

By 'stalking' does Baghdad Bob mean 'a poster following him from thread to thread?'

For those who delineate between to the two.

So many just dont want to accept reality and constantly offer up excuses upon excuses as to why our stuff ups are really understandable.

its not so much that Toumpas is no good. its that he was the wrong choice in light of our needs NOW

That this kid comes good in 2-3 years is wonderful. where will the rest of the team be ??

YES. & Vines is the exact player we need to START that climb....Toumpas is not that kid.

He is not ready for the initial hard slog.

Wines was ready in Round 1. We all saw it.

Neeld blew that one badly.

The many are making excuses for the error. Its not to say Jimmy is ordinary,,,,just that Olly was a better choice at the time.

Why is it CONTEXT is the hardest word....maybe Elton knows

WYL, what do you think would have happened if Wines had come to Melbourne? If he'd had to play alongside the remainder of our pathetic midfield? You talk a lot about how our club has an ingrained psychological problem, that we're 'cooked' mentally and that the tanking saga has killed our culture and spirit. Why is it, then, that Wines would just walk in like a messiah and fix everything?

Wines at Melbourne would be half as good as what he is at a club like Port which has a group of star midfielders (Ebert, Boak, Cornes, Hartlett, Wingard, Cassisi). Even if we were a little better off now, we'd still be bottom 2, we'd still have a crap midfield, we'd still need more midfielders this year, and we'd still be looking at a wait before finals.

i didn't ever say he was the messiah. But you gotta start somewhere.

Wines and Viney in the middle together with Jones is a solid start.

Who picked Port to be in the 8 this year???

Wines has been a big factor for them.

Yes we still need 3-4 mids as well as Wines.

Toumpas is icing. Wines is part of the cake.

You're tantamount to saying Port's in the 8 because of Wines.

He's been good this year, but he's not even their fifth best midfielder, which says a lot about their list.

Wines at Melbourne wouldn't be half the player he is now. Conversely, Toumpas at a team like Port would probably be better.

We'll (hopefully) get some decent mids to the club this year, and then the value in taking Toumpas will become a lot clearer.

If Wines was playing for us, then I could guarantee that there would be posters saying "We have so many butchers of the footy and now it looks like we've wasted pick 4 on another one. FMD!"

They'd probably be the same ones that currently whine about Toumpas.

english if you may please sir

If you say you don't like something that inherently implies you don't like another thing, then you obviously also don't like the second thing as well.

Port are not in the 8 because of Ollie Wines, but he has been a very solid contributor.

Toumpas is still a baby in comparison. Not his fault.

I get the feeling sometimes the MFC recruit players for 3 years in advance so nobody can take the blame.

We need players for today. It is simple.

To miss players like Wines in a compromised draft is just bad judgement.

Toumpas still needs time at Casey.

And if Toumpas turns out to be a better player than Wines .......?

Should the Bulldogs have picked Terlich at pick 4? Terlich has been doing better than Macrae. Maybe GWS should have picked Matt Jones at pick 2, because O'Rourke has done nothing so far, while Jones has played nearly every game.

I would have thought that selecting players for today was the idea of trading, while drafting was for the long term.

It's probably my fault for accepting mediocrity, rather than being irrational.

Jimmy should always have played the majority of the year at casey developing, with a few cameo appearances in the seniors to get a feel

I really worry about our development process.

Was probably a desperate neeld exercise to try and save his skin

Toumpas may well be a better player in 3 years.

But the MFC may be done and finished by then.

We need mid extractors now!!!!

Jimmy was always going to be a development player - we all knew this before he was drafted.

Had an interrupted pre-season with a hip op and only been able to play a few games.

Alot of very premature judgements on this site. Will be interesting what a full preseason will do to him.

No, you don't pick up a development player at his pick. That's for a smokey down the list who will play a bit a Casey and may surprise.

He's playing a lot of senior footy, some good, some bad. Wouldn't expect much different at this stage, I think he will be ok..

The hip op happened around this time last year and is being over played a bit, he did a preseason with the rest of the new boys and like them all he needs time to build on that. It's always a reduced programs for 1st year players.

When you have to resort to 'but the MFC might not exist in three years' as your idea of a rational argument, you must be struggling.

Not as much as the club i am not. This is the MFC mate.

This club is completely shot right now. Sad.

aish, watts and toumpas kicking the ball in to our very good forward line excites me, if dunstan slips to pick 20 and we sign a daniel cross and taylor adams things wont be so dull

viney is pretty much wines with pace, better skills and a desire to play for mfc

Forget about Daniel Cross.

Will probably retire at the end of the season.

Will be 31 next year and injuries are catching up with him.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
