This tells a sad story

Im followed melbourne all my life inc 15yr member & cant remember a side so uncompetetive as we have in the last 5-6 yrs

  • Since 2008 we have won 7.5 games of 64 Victorian teams
  • 4 wins against Richmond

And to continue to hear how well our preseason was & how great we are training......

Damming evidence to the organisation...

The Club has nowhere to hide...start talking real to the members.

No more happy spin....None.

Don't think this has to come from the coach, he's only been there a year and the ship was already in a sorry state before he took the helm, something should be coming from the board or administration. Would genuinely like to know what's gone so horribly wrong.

So would i mate. And if we keep hammering we the members will find out.

And no i don't blame the coaches, this is a long term wound.

Fitzroy-esque.

Fitzroy's last few years were really bad but there have been far worse teams over longer periods. If I remember correctly Fitzroy flogged us by 10 goals in the last round of 1993. They were OK in the early part of the decade. And it was hardly poor drafting that hurt them: they were just not financially viable as a team. What's Melbourne's excuse? Fitzroy was a victim of league politics. Melbourne is a victim of its own ineptness.

Carlton was very, very bad for periods in the 00s.

Richmond has been bad in large periods since the early '90s.

Melbourne's 2010 and 2011, excluding 186, were OK, nothing more.

If anything the last few years have been Richmond-esque: fall to the bottom, show a glimmer of hope, and then fall back down again.

Agree. From round 2 2010 (loss to Collingwood by 1 pt) to round 17 2011 (win over Port in Darwin) we were actually a half decent side. Remember we were in the 8 after beating Richmond in round 15 2011.

Then the wheels have totally fallen off since 186 and we haven't recovered.

Something started to go seriously wrong in about August 2010 The club was beginning to stand, but something or someones went horribly wrong in that period, and whatever it is is still within the walls.

The entie club is effected. It has to be.

I have never seen such a half effort by an entire team as i saw last sunday bar 3-4 players.

I still do not understand the psyche of it

It gets worse when you consider that we won four games in 2007 [the year we allegedly tanked] and only a solitary game last year [when we didn't tank]!

Sorry - is this news to some of you??

Where the hell have you been the last 6 years?!??

1 more loss is only that - 1 loss.

Where was this angst and calling for heads last season?

NB. It's just as stupid to do it now...

[censored] poor attitude from you. You just expect everyone to keep sucking mediocrity up. If there are fools around here you must be the biggest of the lot.

Just another season...

Your attitude is part of the cancer Jens.

It might be just my memory (I was pretty young) but my recollection of the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s is that we were worse then than any time in the last 6 years. The data may not stack up that way - but I know that is how I felt during that long, dark, lean period.

Old Dee, WJ or anyone else who is 55+, what are your recollections?

Dont forget the woes of South Melbourne. In steady decline for decades just like us. Got to the stage where no one had the will to fight anymore and just accepted their demise without a whimper. Then the VFL moved in and relocated them in leiu of folding completely.

Disagree.we we a poor side then but far more competative. More like declining rather than permanent bottom feeders that we are now. Edited by Muvver Jones

FFS.

We're 1 single game into this season.

Ok then, what did you expect to see this season?

And do you think it's acceptable to sack a coach after 1 season & 1 game?

i will not accept what i saw last sunday.

STOP MAKING EXCUSES MAN.

We have so many soft [censored] supporters now.

I don't blame them...It's just sad.

Still not a word from the Ivory Tower....

The next month is as important as any in our history.

If we continue on the same path, we will be in dire straights as crowds will drop dramatically. Neeld and his players have t ofind something. Show some real spirit and the supporters will keep supporting.

I haven't made any excuses.

I've asked pertinent questions.

Because I don't believe in action for the sake of taking action.

Action without forethought.

But support for that is prevalent at this point in time.

But you are infering that this situation has only just started.

It has been in the shadows for years.

Last sunday was the rising of the members finally.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
